Gabe Newell, the co-founder and managing director of Valve, said today that Linux is the future of gaming despite its current minuscule share of the market.Newell made his comments while delivering a keynote at LinuxCon in New Orleans. "It feels a little bit funny coming here and telling you guys that Linux and open source are the future of gaming," Newell said. "It's sort of like going to Rome and teaching Catholicism to the pope."

Its pretty Obvious that Gabe want Steam's main platform to become linux after stating his displeasure with windows 8 and by proxy OSX. We already know Valve is working on the steambox console to bring PC gaming back into the living room per say. He than had this too say.

"Next week we're going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room," Newell said.

Vavle had already showed off the Piston and big picture mode which somewhat makes the service interface TV reasy.

Steambox will be intresting but I'm not sure what it can bring to the market at this point. I think if Vavle were serious about the project and getting PC gaming off of Windows they would have had a major E3 showing for steambox to go head on with the the three new consoles.

I honestly dont see the point in a "Steam Box" when all you can do is hook up a PC or a laptop to a TV with an HDMI cable. Heck I do that every now and again when I play World of Warcraft.

Its two thing for Valve.

-It allows them to enter the console like space with something similar to the 3DO.
-They're hoping it aids in getting PC gaming and steam from being so dependent on Windows.

Honestly I see this being a Big Failure as Linux steam only has a few games, and steam lacks any real exclusives which is one f the reasons people buy consoles.
