I've only played Fleshy Souls, not Bony Spirits (its similar twin) or Psychic Specters (the third "definitive" version). I finished it over the summer. It's pretty much Saturday morning cartoon style at first - amnesia, teaching you the basics, episodic problems, and so on - but things really start picking up once you can leave your city (something you couldn't do in the first game) and travel to other areas. Without spoiling too much, there are some time travel shenanigans, plenty of dungeons (some from the first game, but most of the old ones are optional), and some humorous writing. I'd rank it a step above the first game's plot since there's an overarching narrative, though neither would win any awards. Most of the enjoyment I've gotten from the games has come from exploring the visually pleasing world (they make great use of the 3D effect), some of the more interestingly written side quests, and collecting Yo-kai.
