I think this is the first big release of April. Sure Darksiders is a great Zelda clone, but it's a port. And even though I love Switch ports of retro favorites, I prefer to play the latest a greatest. So here comes Super Dragon Ball Heroes, a day-and-date home console port of an arcade tactical card rpg game.

Now, if you're even a casual Dragon Ball fan and that last sentence doesn't pique your interest, you should probably have your pulse checked because you might be dead. I haven't played a card rpg since Baten Kaitos on the GC. I think this will be a good (if not great) use of the Dragon Ball license.

I look forward to this weekend with great anticipation. BBL with first impresssions.

I had this pre-ordered but cancelled it as I had too many things to do in April. I'm still interested in it though. I'm not really familiar with the Dragonball Heroes games. Even though it is card based, it doesn't seem like you construct a deck and are dealt cards like a typical card-based game. My understanding is that you choose what characters (cards) you want and create your party.

Five hours in, currently in act three of the story mode. The story is your usual SDB spinoff nonsense. Some nemesis appears, action must be taken to stop it, blah blah blah. When it comes to SDB spinoffs the story takes a back seat to the gameplay being offered.

Right now the opposition is too easy in order to gauge the level of enjoyment someone who isn't a SDB enthusiast (like me) might get from the game. I just threw together seven random cards and have been steamrolling through the story mode. Presentation wise everything is quite good. It's not on the fidelity level of Dragon Ball FighterZ, but certainly better than the poorly optimized Xenoverse 2.

Gameplay is your usual tabletop ccg affair, only no cards are draw. Your success or failure depends entirely on squad composition rather than overall card quality. In this system it's possible for a baseline, pre-SSJ Goku to have more value than SSB Goku if the squad is setup to use a particular combo. It invites a lot of personalization, something I haven't enjoyed since I played Magic The Gathering more than twenty years ago.

Right now I need things to become more difficult, to force me to re-evaluate my squad combos.

Back with more sometime later.

Ten hours in and I finally hit my first wall. Everything had been a cakewalk up until this point, chapter three act two. Of course it didn't help that the enemy was increasing my CI speed every round, causing me to lose just about every CI challenge. I'm taking the time to retool my deck, insert some higher level combos, play around with accessories for the first time, etc.

I wonder how close I am to the end of story mode? I've got Wasteland 2 coming up on Tuesday.

I've been playing this so much since it came out, I've hardly touched anything else, I have about 55 hours or so logged, it's such a fun and addicting game, I don't even get mad or upset when I don't get the cards I want since getting gacha tickets is so easy.
Really great game, simple and enjoyable.
