Hello
I am new to Nintendo, up till now I have been a Sony and Xbox user but due to the lack of decent games decided to buy a Wii U; however I am a little confused about playing Wii games on the Wii U.
I've ordered Super Mario 3D World and Zelda Wind Waker HD but also I really want Xenoblade Chronicles which comes with a red classic controller, the problem is after reading the official guide it seems I have to 'sync' the Wii U with wiimotes to get into 'Wii Mode'' but I don't have any, with this in mind can I sync the Wii U to Wii mode using the classic controller and/or the Wii U gamepad or MUST I use a wiimote to get Wii games running on the Wii U?

Thanks in advance

Classic controllers connect to the wii remote, so you would need a wii remote to use it. You will need wii remotes to acces the wii menu and control it. There are some WiiU multiplayer games that you will need wii remotes for if you want to play them in multiplayer. So you better get at least one! And seriously: Play Xenoblade! It's awesome!

Out of interest can I plug a Wii U Pro Controller into the Wiimote for Xenoblade or is it best to stick to the red classic controller?

The Pro Controller is a stand alone device, it doesn't plug into anything.

So I could use that for Xenoblade and bypass the Wiimote entirely?
I thought I had to 'sync' the Wii U into 'Wii mode' at least once with the wiimote?

I'd love not to have to get a wiimote if I can avoid it.

No. The Wii U pro controller is for Wii U only.

You may use the Wii Classic Controller and controller pro and Wii Remote/Nunchuks for Wii games. You will have to buy a Wii remote and the appropriate accessories (nunchuk, Wii classic controller) to play any Wii game

one last question:

I'll need a sensor bar too won't I to play Xenoblade Chronicles with the classic controller?
If I understand it correctly I plug the classic controller in the Wiimote and it uses the sensor bar?

You're quite right - to play Wii games on Wii U, you'll need a sensor bar so that you can access Wii Mode. Then, you can plug the Classic Controller into the bottom of the Wii Remote and use it to play Xenoblade Chronicles.

Since you don't seem to have a sensor bar, I'm going to assume you bought the Wii U Basic Pack (white console). If you're short on Wii accessories, might I suggest investing in the Wii Remote Plus Additional Set? It usually retails for around £50 and includes a Wii Remote Plus, a Nunchuk, and a sensor bar - pretty much everything you need to play most Wii games.

With regards to syncing, all you need to do is sync the Wii Remote to the Wii U - you can do this by pressing the HOME button, going to Controller Settings, and following the instructions given on the screen. You won't need to sync anything other than this.
