Topic: RollerCoaster Tycoon World (and all else RCT)

Call me crazy, but this game is actually starting to look good. Despite this being cashless Infogrames publishing it, and almost exclusively unknown developers developing it, and development studios switching twice, it sounds like they really are creating a worthy entry in the series. They seem to really understand that Business Sims are best when the player has as many tools at their disposal as possible, and that they are best as a single player experience. Also, they actually delayed the game for quality, indicating that they really want to make this good.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

In other news, I'm on the last few campaigns of RTC3, and I must say they really screwed this up. All of the scenarios have really easy requirements to reach Tycoon, taking 5 hours max to beat. I far prefer scenarios like Bumbly Bazaar or Infernal Views, which have huge long term goals that encourage the player to build and build and build.

I've been keeping an eye on it.

As for myself, I do like the coaster building challenges. And the very few scenarios in which you have an extremely limited amount of time to reach the target, like Fiasco Forest back in the original RCT. I like the incredible amount of planning it requires because you only have one year, meaning you only have one year's worth of income and one year of research, and to top it off, you can't cop out and use marketing campaigns to boost your guest count. Even though it does pull a couple jerk moves, you definitely feel accomplished for completing it.

I've always wanted to play a coaster game, but never really had the chance.

I was gifted two PC coaster games as a kid (I think one may have been a RCT game, but I'm not sure. I know the other was definitely a Disney one), but our computer wasn't good enough to run either.

Maybe I should dig them out & try them on our laptop. Even though laptops aren't as powerful as desktops, I got these games over 10 years ago, so I imagine they shouldn't be an issue for a modern laptop?

Heh, if a modern laptop can't run this game, then you have some serious problems. The original RCT has the following system requirements. Keep in mind that these are the ideal requirements, not the recommended or minimum which consist of even weaker hardware requirements.

Pentium II 350 CPU (EDIT: This is a single-core 350 MHz processor)
Windows 95/98
64 MB RAM
180 MB Hard Drive Space
Windows 95/98 compatible 4 MB accelerated SVGA Card
Windows 95/98 compatible Sound Card
DirectX 5.0
Mouse (yes, it actually specifies this!)

Yeah, you should have no issue whatsoever.

Also, RCT2 is on Steam for a pretty low price, so you should be good.

Heh, my brother just gave me 6 bucks to get RCT Deluxe for him on Steam. It hasn't aged a bit since '99. I spent WAY too much time playing that and Zoo Tycoon way back when. Fantastic games; I can't recommend them enough.

Ah, okay then.

Once the laptop is fixed (my father accidentally got a virus on it) I'll dig up the games and try it out.

It looks like impressions of this game at PAX Prime are rather positive.

I'm particularly excited about this part:

"In RCTW, creating an Asian- or Wild West-inspired section of the park will actually impact who visits and how the rides perform (economically). Riders who like the West will hang-out in that area more than other park areas."

Your Tycoon history sounds a lot like mine. I played RCT, Zoo Tycoon, and Zoo Tycoon 2 to death. (There were all sorts of other Tycoon games in there as well, but none of them compare) I also got a hold of RCT2, but admittedly never loved it like the original. I've never played the third one.

I'm also cautiously optimistic about this title; I was willing to jump back into the series with RCT 3D on 3DS until I read multiple reviews on it.

I also can't be the only one that's done some...diabolical things in these games. laughs evilly

3 is...interesting. There are a lot of great ideas and really well designed scenarios, but the game is let down by a few things.

1. The interface is straight up garbage
2. The selection of themes is much smaller
3. (most important) The scenarios are beaten too quickly. This basically resulted in me beating a scenario in 2 hours, then moving on. I don't play sandbox mode because I like having something to work towards and all the restraints that come with the financial component.

Three always did intrigue me, mainly because of the fact that you could "ride" the rides. I'm unsure why I never got it, actually. (It's been a few years since it was released) Going by your description, it looks like something I would have enjoyed, just not as much as the original; I also need achievements to motivate me in the game.

I love the RCT games! The first one is easily my favorite, though it's been a while since I've played it... I need to get back into it!

I also really enjoy playing RCT3, but not to play the campaign, just to make coasters like this:

Looking forward to World, hope it turns out good! (And continues the tradition of having game breaking cheat codes!)

I like makin' games!
Future Pinball games!
Petit Computer games!!
and SmileBASIC games!
Waiting for Kirby Air Ride 2. One day, it will come. One day...
