The father of the video game industry, Ralph Baer, has passed away. He was 92. He made the computer table tennis game long before it was called Pong.
Baer developed the very first console video game system, originally known as the Brown Box, but later licensed and sold as 1972's Magnavox Odyssey, which laid the foundation for video games as we know them today.
Baer, an engineer and inventor through and through, also developed the light gun, recognized as the very first peripheral for video game consoles, the interactive memory game, Simon, and other inventions.
Well that makes me a little more than upset. I actually met the guy at one of his presentations over at BAE last year. He was a brilliant man, even at his age, when we spoke he talked about how he was still sending in new toy designs for approval at some company. It's a shame that most people don't know about him, he's the reason we're able to do what we do. Hopefully he'll get the recognition he deserves now, though it's a shame he isn't around to see it.
