I have a Wii U but also have a black Wii, PAL version, I am wanting to start collecting and playing GameCube games. My Wii does have the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots, does this mean I can play GameCube games on my Wii, the reason I ask is I have seen You Tube videos which say some models won't play them.

Thank you

Yes, it can play Gamecube games. As far as I know, the only model that doesn’t play Gamecube games is the Wii Mini.

@Daisyfan1971
Let me help you. (Copied from Nintendo America website)

Three models of the Wii console have been released:

Model Number RVL-001:
Released in November 2006.
Serial number prefix is "LU" or "LB."

Model Number RVL-101:
Released in October 2011.
Serial number prefix is "KU" or "KB."
Has the same look, feel and function as model RVL-001, with the following exceptions:
Designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically.
The Nintendo GameCube controller sockets and memory card slots have been removed.
The system is not compatible with Nintendo GameCube game discs or accessories.
The system does not support Wii titles or accessories that require the use of the Nintendo GameCube controller ports. Because they require Nintendo GameCube controller ports to work, the following Wii titles are not compatible with model RVL-101:

Active Life: Explorer
Active Life: Extreme Challenge
Active Life: Magical Carnival
Active Life: Outdoor Challenge
Ultimate Party Challenge

The following titles will have limited functionality when used with model RVL-101:

Dance Dance Revolution
DanceDanceRevolution II
Dance Dance Revolution: Disney Grooves
DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party
DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party 2
DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party 3
Walk It Out

Wii mini: Model Number RVL-201:
Serial number prefix is "HW."
Designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically.
Does not support online functionality.
Has a single USB port.
Does not support the use of an SD Card.
Does not include Nintendo GameCube controller sockets and memory card slots.
Is not compatible with Nintendo GameCube game discs or accessories.
Does not support Wii titles or accessories that require the use of the Nintendo GameCube controller ports (see list of titles above for support limitations).

If your Wii model = RVL-001, you CAN play Gamecube games (Displayed Vertical on their box)

@JoakimZ That's not entirely true. The first versions of the white and black Wii could play GameCube games, but ALL later models (including the horizontally oriented ones that came without a stand), including not just white and black, but also red and blue Wii's, could not play GameCube games.

The difference is quite easily discernible, seeing as only the compatible models had the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots.

BUT: regardless of the existence of ports or not, all hardware inside all model Wii's is exactly the same, which means that they all have native GameCube support, and as such, nearly all of them can be soft-modded to work with either GameCube discs or ISO's, except for the Wii Mini. That's not because the primary hardware isn't the same, but because it lacks an SD card slot and wifi.

So, @Daisyfan1971, the version of the Wii that you have, is perfectly able to play original GameCube discs. Now all you need is a couple of controllers and memory cards. Standard GameCube controllers only come in wired form, and if you don't mind that, they're more than fine, because it's a good controller and you could always buy some extension cords for them, if the standard length isn't ideal for you.

But personally, I would advise you to look for wireless controllers, either the official Wavebird (which is rather hard to come by or often really expensive) or some third party controllers, such as the D3mon or Q-Ware GameCube controllers for Wii.

I have both and they're pretty good replacements for the official ones, and they've lasted for all these years, AND they both have a rumble function, something which the official Wavebird controller strangely doesn't have.

I've also seen some other wireless controllers on Amazon, but I've no idea if these are any good, but they're not too expensive either.

And I don't know if you have any good retro game shops in your area to buy GameCube peripherals and games, but if not, here are a couple of decent ones:

https://www.game.co.uk/en/games/retro-games/gamecube/?merchna...

Or, you could always keep an eye on Amazon UK. They actually have some good deals on GameCube games and peripherals, from time to time...

And if you would be interested in playing games from other regions, you might also want to get a freeloader disc:

It allows you to play American and Japanese games without modding your console.

@ThanosReXXX
Btw, is Freeloader for Gamecube Legal ?
I'm afraid it wasn't allowed by Nintendo.
If it worked on Wii, can i play Japanese & PAL Gamecube games on USA Wii ?
And how about saving different region Gamecube games on one Memory card (USA, Japan & PAL Save data on one Memory card) ?
Will it writeable & readable without crashing ?

@Anti-Matter Yes and yes. It is completely legal and you can play all region games on your GameCube compatible Wii or GameCube. It doesn't modify your console. The disc simply reboots the system and fools it into thinking that it is from another region.

Of course, the link I provided, was for the PAL version of Freeloader. In your region, you would have to buy the NTSC version of Freeloader. And the Wii, if not soft-modded, should not be on firmware 4.3, because from what I've read online, that update apparently removed compatibility with region free gameplay.

EDIT:
And NTSC and PAL saves side by side on the same memory card are also not a problem.

@ThanosReXXX Thanks for the info, I’ve never seen a Wii without the GC Controller ports and menory card slots. Good to know they’re not on all models.

@JoakimZ No problem, man. You're welcome. Goes to show that you can learn something new every day...

@Daisyfan1971 You're welcome. Hope you enjoy all the GameCube games.
By the way: if you've no idea which games are good enough to consider, or if you have certain types of games that you prefer, I'd be more than happy to provide you with some info on worthwhile titles, and I'm sure that some other people would also have no trouble at all listing their personal favorites.

@ThanosReXXX that's great, thank you, thinking I'm going to start with Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and also thinking of the Sonic collection, I don't like the sonic games now but sonic 1, 2 and 3 were great games. Also remember True Crime being a good game. Also I have Mario kart 8 for the Wii U but I may get Double Dash for the GameCube. Once again thank you for your help
