During a notable Japanese event announcement, Satoru Iwata has stated that Nintendo can now officially give permission for anyone to use Nintendo's character IP for derivative works, such as Let's Plays, music covers, and fan art.
A "Creative Endorsement Program" for Japan has also been announced in which Nintendo will provide revenue to creators who make well-received works. Right now, it's only available for NicoNico.
