@Tsurii I think that's probably the correct pronunciation; it's a silent 'z'. I've been using the name too long to remember exactly why I chose it, but I think the main appeal was that I thought it looked cool in written form, but trying to pronounce it turns your mouth into a fuzzy malfunctioning mess. So it's best not to.

It's had some interesting interpretations though; people's minds to a sort of auto-correct so that it becomes something more familiar. Manx is a new one, but Marx is quite common, which is always novel. I might found the theory of 'Maxzism' so that people can better differentiate the two. Ehem... "Human societies shall forever be in a state of turmoil and unrest until everyone learns to boogie". There. Founded. Spread the word.

Is "Tsurii" just the English transliteration of the Japanese transliteration of the English word "Tree"? Or is it named after a particular character? I'm assuming it has some Japanese connection.

Also, how is @CanisWolfred meant to be pronounced?

@Tsurii You look like a weeaboo because you're posting in the Anime & Manga thread, not because of your name. Just like everyone else here.

Not wanting to start a discussion about what an constitutes an acceptable level of 'weeb' and what doesn't. That conversation seemingly never ends, and certainly never ends well.

Not particularly enlightening on Google Translate's part, though. It's basically told you the Japanese for 'tree' was... well, 'tree'.

Anyway, yeah, this is getting rather off-topic, but so was that dream episode, so I think it's acceptable.

Ugh. "Weeaboo." That word needs to go die in a ditch somewhere. It's misused so often anymore that it doesn't even really mean anything.

@Ralizah Yeah, it's now about as cutting as the word 'noob', which has come to mean, "I don't like you very much, probably"; blunted through overuse.

Anyway, I wonder if anything interesting is on its way for Autumn/Fall... I don't tend to be very up of these things.

I personally haven't seen any highlights other than continuations, but feel free to take a look for yourself. BTW, there are plenty of similar sites if you that one doesn't work for you (I know it's pretty system-heavy, I can never use it on my iPad). I only linked that website because of the amount of options you can access without signing up for anything. Which is great, since the default set ups are always terrible on these sort of websites, IMO.

Is One Punch Man worth watching if I don't really like shounen anime?

It coasts the line between homage and parody like a pro, if that means anything to you. I guess it depends on what you usually don't like like shounen anime.

Yeah, when it comes to the Autumn season, I'll be checking out Time Bokan 24, the Last Witch Izetta, Luger Code 1951, Nazotokine, Flip Flappers, Ping Pong Girl, Slayer Maioka (can't fully remember the name of this one), the Drifters, and Soul Busters (this is a bit wrong I think, but I'll know it when I see it).

Let's see how many I actually keep up with (especially since Netflix is getting new seasons of Arrow & Flash the same week, which will be competing for my attention).

@Ralizah It's worth finding out whether you like it, if you're able to watch the first few episodes for free. It spends a bit of time at the beginning meandering in its own overblown satire, but then the plot picks and and... well, it actually has a plot - which is a surprise in itself.

You might like it precisely because it makes a (lovingly) mocks of a lot of Shounen tropes. Or you might hate it. But I think it's noteworthy enough for you to bother finding out.

Uwaaah! It looks really good! It's (vaguely) guilty pleasure central! Haikyuu!! is back, which means I have to admit I like sports anime, and so is Bungou Stray Dogs, which means I have to admit I like watching attractively rangy men is coats throw magic spells at each other. And there's a show about brevet cycling, which - unlike Haikyuu's volleyball - is a sport I actually do. It'll be interesting to see how many similarities it has with Yowamushi Pedal (which was another guilty sports-anime pleasure of mine). There are also a hand full of shows which I don't know anything about, but have got relatively restrained, pretty art styles, which I always hope is a sign that the content will rely on more than cute girls and explosions. It's not much to go on, but it's something. I was hoping Rakugo Shinjuu might get its second season, but that would be being greedy.

Anyway, thanks for the link.

Wait, why would those be guilty pleasures? I haven't watched much of Haikyuu or Yowamushi Pedal (only clips), but it looks like an earnist, if exaggerated sports drama. In fact, there's a lot of good sports anime, and you don't always need to be a fan of the sport. It's nothing to be ashamed of, unlike, say, an overtly girly anime like PreCure, or blatant moe fanservice like Strike Witches.

Speaking of which, there is going to be more PreCure and Strike Witches this coming season. I am pleased.

Oh yeah, this week on Imagine-Nation they covered the manga Fire Force, the current serialization of the man behind Soul Eater.

It's set in an alternate version of Tokyo, that's culturally a mix of the Meiji, Taisho, & Showa eras, and wrapped up in a Steam Punk motif.

The citizens have been mysteriously spontaneously combusting, turning into Fire People (flame based zombies that only seek to destroy). The main character has the power to create firey explosive kicks, and due to his power was blamed for the fire that killed his family. However, he believes it was someone else, and to clear his name he joins a special fire brigade made up of people with similar powers, who fight the Fire People (there are 8 of these special brigades, and he joins the 8th. The higher the number, the more powerful the members, supposedly).

They also went behind the scenes, and this was the first time he's ever let a camera crew into his workspace (I noticed he has the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon, as well as character figures from his own Soul Eater on his desk).

Last week they covered the manga Nordic Girl Åsa Discovers the Mysteries of Japan.

Made by a Swedish mangaka living in Japan, it's a comedy series based around her culture shock upon moving to the country. It started out as a web series on her blog, but was popular enough that it was picked up by a publisher.

It's notable because it's one of the very few times that a foreign magnaka has found success in Japan. There have been similar popular manga, but they've always been written by Japanese magnaka describing the experience of their western spouses/friends, making this a true standout.

@CanisWolfred I mean "guilty pleasure" in a very gentle sense. The main reason I stick 'sports anime' as a whole under that category is due to the every plot in in every series being forced - pretty much out of necessity - into the same shape. Underdog character in highschool team sports club overcomes all odds to go the the Nationals and win. By trying really hard, and working as a team.

I mean, you can say the same thing about most action shows (or probably most shows of any genre), but the 'handicap' possessed my the main characters is usually so blatant that it can make the whole thing seem a bit cookie-cutter at first glance. So yeah, the Sports Anime writer's hand is kind of forced with regards to the main plot points, but the the art is how they fill out the spaces in between. Kuroko's Basketball and Haikyuu!! both have similar ideas (short guy in a sport that requires height), but I found the former to be clunky and lifeless, but the latter to be really charming, well balanced, and engaging.

Yowamushi Pedal is definitely a guilty pleasure because it's just so Shounen that I'm surprised it doesn't just explode. I think it's really good as it though, with its own unabashed charm and decent helping of primary-coloured humour. Also, it's full of bicycle fan-service (right down to the groupset details), which I like. It's kind of guilty because I feel I know the exactly the plot that I'm setting myself up for. Not guilty is any "shameful" way (although I admit the two are perilously close to direct synonyms), but more in a kind of way that if someone found me watching it and said, "Dude, that show looks like its aimed at 10 year olds", all I'd be able to reply with is "...Yes, I know. Isn't it great?".

I mean, probably a lot of the shows I watch are like that, but a few shows aren't, and it's fun to pretend my tastes in, err... children's cartoons, are actually super sombre and sophisticated. Which is obviously ridiculous.

So yeah, I only mean "guilty" in the sense that most of the shows are easily dissembleable into their appealing elements, and a lot of those aren't particularly subtle.

Haikyuu's really good though. It makes volleyball look like the sport of kings.

@Maxz I actually liked Kuroko Basket, since it was like your average shounen anime while trying its best to stay grounded in the world of Basketball, even if that meant straining at the seams. It was facinating, at least, especially considering how often egos seem to get in the way in Basketball, making the whole "learning to succeed through teamwork" aspect feel a lot more natural than, say, The Prince of Tennis (which, from what I'm told, is the "Bleach" of Sports manga, and I can believe that from what I've seen of it)

Over the past week I watched through Battle Girls: Time Paradox.

It's a decidedly run of the mill fanservicy series about a girl who gets sent back in time to the Warring States era, and gets caught up in Nobunaga's quest for unification (the twist, it's an alternate history where everyone is a woman, cue the fanservicy dress). Other than the fact that the main character could be a bit grating at times, it was decent for what it was. The climactic final battle was actually decent as far as these kinds of shows go, and the rockish sounding OP was actually quite good.

It gave me something to quickly watch while I waited for tomorrow's premier of Marvel's Luke Cage on Netflix, so it did it's job.
