Re: Nintendo Labo Drops To Fourth (And 17th) In The Japanese Charts

Obviously it would be great to see it at the top of the charts. But isn't Labo more comparable to construction toys like Lego? Surely Lego execs aren't nervously awaiting the first two weeks of sales of new kits on which to base the success or failure of a product? I would imagine it's a slow burn of sales over a long period with a massive spike at Christmas. Who knows? Maybe it will be a commercial flop as many things I hold dear seem to be!

I really think all the gamers on here complaining about it are missing the point because they aren't the target demographic for Labo. It's clearly designed to appeal to kids and parents. I bought a Switch based on Labo, I was planning on picking one up at some point but was still happy working my Wii U. As soon as saw the first Labo trailer I was convinced. My son (9) loves it and all three of my kids were busy making the kits last weekend and spent hours decorating them after. My younger kids who have shown no interest in video games before loved the games, yes they don't have great depth but it's not aimed at gamers, My daughter loved the fact that she could play it even though she normally sttuggles with a control pad. Nintendo are trying to bring other people in much like with the Wii. It has obvious appeal to loads of parents who worry about screen time, and this is a toy that caters to that concern as well as being something that kids will actually want to build/play. I haven't picked up the robot kit yet as the variety kit was a bit of a treat for my kids but my son already has it on his Birthday list.

@jdors
Good Lord!! So it's not for you, move on. Not all things are for all people. A review is one person's opinion, you don't have to agree. Also this review doesn't state that labo is a gimmick, it's says it may "seem like a gimmick".
When did Nintendo ever say the Switch is a purely video game console? Even if they did, why does it have to fit your narrow idea of what that can encompass? It's clearly been designed to do many things, it seems to me Labo was designed at the same time as the hardware given how seamlessly they work together. As for sales how can you call it a flop based on the Japanese sales? I would also say that this is the type of product that will mainly be bought as a present for kids so birthdays/Christmas not by teenage or twentysomething gamers with their own disposable income. Either way it's far too early to tell whether it is a financial success or not. I love it, my kids love it as do many more. I think you have entirely missed the point.
