Re: Opinion: I May Never Play The Original Ocarina Of Time Again

gmar

I never owned a Nintendo 64, so I didn’t get to play Ocarina of Time back in the day. I eventually had the chance to play it later on, but perhaps because I came to it so late, it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. In my own case, Link's Awakening is a game that holds a lot of nostalgic value for me, and it, too, received a remake. However, I don’t believe this remake truly serves as a replacement for the original. I found it disappointing that it stayed so faithful to the source material that the content remained virtually unchanged. That said, since the original was arguably the best game on the Game Boy, the remake itself wasn’t a bad game by any means. Furthermore, unlike Breath of the Wild, the graphic style was disappointingly childish. While it is certainly a game intended for all ages, many adults who played the original were looking forward to this release, and I think the decision to make the remake feel so juvenile was a misstep. The music, too, was rearranged to focus on string instruments, leaving it feeling less impactful than the original. The main theme, played on the violin, lacked the punch found in the SNES version of A Link to the Past. Because this remake adopts such a polarizing style, I do not believe it can serve as a true replacement for the original.
Perhaps those who have fond memories of Ocarina of Time might feel the same way about its remake as I do about the Link's Awakening remake. Personally, though, the Ocarina of Time remake looks quite good to me.

Re: Nintendo Of America's President Comments On The Possibility Of GTA 6 On Switch 2

Crucially, the launch of GTA 5 coincided with a slump for Nintendo, a period when Sony sought to seize the opportunity to dominate the gaming industry. The games at the heart of this were adult-oriented titles aimed at a specific segment of gamers, and GTA 5 was one of them. Sony showed no interest in a family-friendly image. The flagship titles it championed for the PS4 were exclusively mature games like The Last of Us. While Nintendo consoles do host mature titles, the issue goes beyond the mere presence or absence of such games on a platform. At the very least, Nintendo’s first-party titles aim to appeal to everyone, whereas Sony’s approach was quite different. Had the Switch not succeeded following the failure of the Wii U, video gaming might well have been relegated to a niche culture for a select group of gamers. That is why I cannot understand why GTA is the best-selling game despite being aimed at a specific audience, nor do I get the hype surrounding the release of GTA6. After all, it is expensive and won't even be released on physical media.

Re: Japanese Console Market Would Have Been "Eliminated" If Switch Failed, Says Analyst

gmar

The period leading up to the launch of the Nintendo Switch in the 2010s was a dark age for the console gaming industry. Japan fared relatively better, being Nintendo's home turf, but the situation was dire elsewhere. The Wii U was not even released in many countries, allowing the PS4 to dominate those markets. In the case of South Korea, the situation was dire enough to spark rumors of a Nintendo withdrawal, despite the country being right next to Japan. The issue was that, with Sony dominating the console market, the games being released were almost exclusively aimed at adults. Grand Theft Auto V is a prime example. Furthermore, the titles Sony included in its hardware bundles were also mature-rated games, such as God of War. If the situation had unfolded as analyzed in this article, the current game industry would be in a terrible state.

Is Koei Tecmo messing with us? Ninja Gaiden III was already released as a paid title via Hamster’s Console Archives series, yet now they’re adding the exact same game to Switch Online? The same thing happened with its predecessor, Ninja Gaiden II. That said, Switch Online is still the better option, considering Hamster is known for selling classic games at exorbitant prices. Furthermore, Ikari Warriors is already included in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, and Dragon Buster is in the Namco Museum Archives. Ultimately, the only significant addition among these new titles is R.C. PRO-AM II.
And while Time Extension unfailingly covers news about Hamster's Arcade Archives every week, they actually ignore news like this regarding Switch Online.

Re: Review: Truxton Extreme (Switch 2) - A Thrilling Return For A Classic Shoot-'Em-Up Series

gmar

"After unlocking and seeing everything, only high score chasers will keep coming back"
The reason this is cited as a drawback likely stems from issues regarding the genre's mass appeal. Shoot-'em-ups have long since lost their mainstream popularity, having declined into a genre played almost exclusively by hardcore enthusiasts. The primary reason for this is that the games became excessively difficult. That is why, much like the recently released Star Fox, there is a need for efforts to appeal to a broader audience. Unfortunately, however, developers of shoot-'em-up games have neglected to make such efforts. In many cases, they created games with an exclusive focus on a niche fanbase while disregarding mainstream appeal. Their biggest mistake was creating only excessively difficult games. Fundamentally, shoot-'em-up games are single-player experiences. In an era saturated with competitive multiplayer titles, the score-based competition typical of shoot-'em-up games feels primitive. It simply doesn't appeal to modern audiences. If one were to incorporate competitive elements into a shoot-'em-up game, a design similar to Star Fox's Battle Mode would be the better approach.

I also want to address a point regarding Wario Land 3.

"IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST WARIO LAND, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST TRY IT"?

HAS THE AUTHOR NEVER PLAYED ANY OTHER GAMES IN THE WARIO LAND SERIES? In fact, Wario Land 3 is a game that absolutely should not be played by anyone new to the Wario Land series. While many people in reviews and comments heap praise on Wario Land 3, I simply cannot understand them. At its core, the Wario Land series is defined by exhilarating action, not by a reliance solely on puzzles. Although Wario Land 2 introduced puzzle elements alongside Wario's newfound invincibility, it retained the abilities from the previous game, making it a superb sequel. In contrast, Wario Land 3 stripped Wario of all his established abilities. This made his movement sluggish and frustrating, and left him unable to properly attack enemies. Naturally, players familiar with other titles in the Wario Land series were disappointed by this jarring departure from the formula. The fact that Wario Land 4 on the Game Boy Advance returned to the style of Wario Land 2 underscores that Wario Land 3 is the most terrible entry in the series. With the addition of the true masterpiece Wario Land 1, Wario Land 2 is now the only game in the series that hasn't been added to NSO yet. Honestly, Wario Land 1 or 2 should have been playable right from the launch of the NSO Game Boy service.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy (Color) Game Ranked

This ranking is largely nonsense. Of course, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX is a flawless game that no one could dispute, and it certainly deserves the top spot. But Tetris at number two? While it was the best-selling Game Boy game and belongs on the list based on sales figures alone, it inevitably falls behind other titles when evaluated seriously. Given that Tetris DX is ranked 16th, the original Tetris belongs in that same range. While the 1994 Donkey Kong is undoubtedly a great game, I don't think it deserves to rank as high as third place. It is significantly overrated. On the other hand, Mega Man V and Pokémon Trading Card Game are vastly underrated. Frankly, these games are far better than the original Tetris and Donkey Kong 1994. The ranking given to The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons is also unfair. Since the two games were released simultaneously, they should be treated as a single title. Just because Pokémon is released in two separate versions, we don't rank the two games individually, do we?

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy & GBA Library With Four More Titles

gmar

@Grim If you have only played Wario Land 3, it is essentially the same as never having properly experienced the Wario Land series. Having played the earlier titles first, I was disappointed that Wario Land 3 stripped away all the abilities from previous games and turned Wario into a sluggish character. The Wario Land series is characterized by exhilarating action, but Wario Land 3, which eliminated that feature, was truly the most terrible game in the series. Fortunately, Wario Land 4 for the Game Boy Advance returned to the original style, making it a game well worth playing. I hope you take this opportunity to play all the other titles in the Wario Land series as well.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy & GBA Library With Four More Titles

gmar

It has taken fully three years since the Game Boy service launched for Wario Land 1 to finally be added. Honestly, this game should have been included right from the start. Instead, back then, they released Wario Land 3, the worst entry in the series. I simply cannot understand the people who count that garbage Wario Land 3 among their favorites. Since no one else is talking about Fortified Zone, I’ll mention that it was actually a pretty decent game. It was an action game with an atmosphere reminiscent of the classic Metal Gear series. While the sequel, Fortified Zone 2, was more polished and fun, the first game wasn't bad either.

Re: Nintendo Talks About Connecting Players With Its Past Via Switch Online

@andykara2003 I cannot understand why companies that port classic games are criticized for such trivial reasons. I have played Nintendo Classics many times, but I had no trouble playing them. If you do not want input lag, instead of bashing Nintendo here, just download an emulator and play it. That is the best way. I’m sick of the constant complaints about input lag. I absolutely detest people like you who keep harping on about input lag.

Re: Feature: 10 N64 Games We Played In A Wondrous Alternate Timeline

Unfortunately, the Nintendo 64 failed in Japan and the East. You may be writing this article because you are Westerners, but in Japan, the Nintendo 64 was a console that fell behind even the Sega Saturn. A great many well-made games were released not only for the PlayStation but also for the Sega Saturn. It is simply that many of these games were not released in the West, so Westerners are unaware of them. At the time, Nintendo’s tyranny over third-party developers and their insistence on using only small-capacity cartridges meant that their failure was partly their own doing. In that it was a console that succeeded only in the West, it shares similarities with the Sega Genesis.
