My two cents:
I'm happy to see Charizard become an independent character. The main reason I didn't use him in Brawl was because he was tied to two others and you have to waste time switching and taking damage between lives. Ivysaur made no sense compared to Venusaur and Squirtle was just an inferior Diddy Kong. On top of that, Mega 'Zard X is my favorite mega from the new games, so if I get nothing else I wanted from this game at least I will have this!
Greninja is popular among people who have actually played X & Y and is easily the best new starter. He's fast and offensively oriented, so while he may catch Smash players off guard he actually makes a lot of sense on the roster.
The main argument against Mewtwo seems to be that he isn't popular. Not only would I say he IS popular but Lucario is NOT popular. Lucario was pushed on the pokemon franchise as a cool aura sensitive monster, which conceptually is indeed cool, but Lucario doesn't have much of a fan base among players of the actual pokemon games, at least not to the extent Mewtwo does. He's decent in competitive, but Mewtwo destroys him statistically and practically.
While I do think it's beginning to look bleak with no Mewtwo yet, I still have some hope. Mewtwo and Charizard were the only two pokemon in X & Y to get TWO mega evolutions, which suggests to me he's at least being thought about. While I will be sad if he doesn't make a return with a faster, better moveset I'm pleased to at least have 'Zard and ZSS.
Oh, and we still need Falco, Puff, Ganon, and Falcon. There is no excuse for them to not return. Fudge the character select screen, the moar characters the moar better! XD
