Being old enough to see the start of the explosion of all of the series games, I've always started with the oldest first in the types of games I enjoy. That generally means that I rarely jump into games that didn't interest me in their original debut. On the other hand, I have gone back and picked up games I missed when a sequel piqued my interest in order to play them sequentially. My most favorite games were ones that built upon the sequels, especially literally. Suikoden was phenomenal for allowing your character data to pass to the sequel. Some of the old SSI Dungeons and Dragons games were the same. Character investment indeed.
The changes are bad and keep getting worse. Sandshrew day was the start of the backslide. Our group was set to play at the park and it's not really conducive to hang near the pokestops so hanging out and chatting without incense to boost the rates was really an impact so we broke up and went our own ways early. After that I took my disabled wife home and went pre-pandemic and drove strip mall parking lot around the town until I got enough shinies for both of us to get two of each type. It can only get worse for stuffel as 3 hours will eliminate that meet up time in favor of me driving around looking for the 400 candy on both as well as the shinies.
I get it everyone plays their own way. My way is to completely explore and conquer everything before I beat a game. Then I feel I've truly won. Most of the time that is a huge part of the reward of the ending. Unless the ending blows (Looking at you Shining Force II), I go back and enjoy taking the game down differently or with some challenge.
I have a Wii U and Switch, and I haven't bought any of the upgraded versions of the games I have on the Wii U. So Mario Kart 8 is on the Wii U and Smash Bros on the Switch for example. Even if there are a few extras in a Deluxe version...not worth buying all over again.

@Tyranexx It's not like they were going to help if you had issues one way or another.
