I would recommend everyone read the original interview instead of this paraphrased one, as the original has a full deconstruction by the dev that is a lot more insightful about both his technical and business flaws and sounding less whiny than the blurbs above.
There is one reason I can think of Microsoft removing the emulator that doesn't have anything to do with Nintendo. The emulator could be used to emulate games they are still selling in stores, mainly their N64 products that are bundled with the Rare Reply (and can be sold separately). Letting the emulator in play would have them be competing with piracy in the very marketplace they are trying to sell. It would be like Nike letting off brand Nike knockoffs to be sold in their own store.
I hope local PvP becomes available eventually too. I like the Gym battles a lot, but I'd also like to just come across someone and declare a pokemon match!
@King-Demon Make sure you don't have power saver mode on when playing any multiplayer modes with MH. I've had hunters with me trying to debug a similar issue, local or online. Found out that the power saver mode will severely weaken a 3DS's signal strength for the wifi. Keep that on full power if you expect to play MP modes, and you 'should' be fine.
I'm wondering if this may actually be a 'prequel' to Wind Waker. We don't know for how long Ganon had a hold on most of Hyrule before the king flooded everything, and this could be showing the events leading up to his decision to flood everything. That could also explain the Koroks.
@Stu13 If you haven't yet, I'd recommend taking a look at your local library. I just rented it there today, and will be making up my own mind before I buy. I was surprised to see that the library system near me pretty much took over when Blockbuster died.
