The big issue I feel with the Game of the Year debate is that people fail to make the distinction between the fact that the Award is intended for the BEST game of the year, rather than your favourite. A lot of the excuses proposed for the award is based on external factors such as "Larian is a smaller studio so they deserve it more" or "Zelda sold a bunch of copies meaning it deserves it more". No. The award is about quality, not based on biases or anything else. If we judge the award strictly on quality, I believe Tears of the Kingdom wins. Is it an expansion/DLC to Breath of the Wild? Maybe, I could see why some people would think that despite it being a misguided opinion. But DLC or not, Tears of the Kingdom ultimately is Breath of the Wild but better, and Breath of the Wild was already one of the greatest games of all time.
