Re: Feature: 13 Studios That Should Take A Nintendo Series For A Genre Spin

That’s perfectly fair. All things considered, I don’t think I would want to see Link in a souls-like game either, but I enjoy plenty of Nintendo games and knowing that they’ve developed a game doesn’t turn me off it in the least. Even with regards to Zelda - I’m open to being proven otherwise. If they can make Link suitably mature, I’d be interested. On that subject, I think that there’s no reason a company like FromSoftware couldn’t achieve a souls-like with Nintendo - although it seems relatively unlikely as they’ve only collaborated on a few titles in the past. Regardless, we are different people, and I respect that you feel differently about that subject.

As to objectivity and the measurements of it, fair enough, in that case “subjectively good” will suffice. Plenty of games they’ve released recently have been subjectively good, and were well-received.

Anyways, I would certainly consider giving Pikmin/a Fire Emblem’s game a go if you’re able to look past the fact that they’re Nintendo games! I especially enjoy the latter, and there are quite a few different games within the franchise as well. If you don’t enjoy the newer releases, you may enjoy the older.

Kudos to you for the thoughtful response as well!

Firstly: I understand where you’re coming from, part of me agrees, but while you’re entitled to your opinion, others are entitled to theirs.

Personally, I’m not a fan of ton of Nintendo developed characters myself, with some exceptions such as the cast of Fire Emblems and the like. I don’t think Link, as a character, would fit well into a souls-like game. That being said, I DO believe Nintendo would be capable of developing a character that would fit appropriately into the setting and/or genre and I wouldn’t mind playing a Nintendo souls-like myself; I can’t personally envision what the game would look like but that doesn’t mean it would certainly be a bust. Nintendo is capable of developing more adult-like characters, but Link wasn’t created with that intention in mind, as is the case with a lot of the games they develop. Souls-like games, as I’m sure you’re very aware, are generally created with a (majority) adult/older audience in mind, and most Nintendo franchises don’t appeal to the same demographic.

As to why I wouldn’t write off potential collaborations immediately: to address a pretty glaring issue, recently Nintendo has dropped the ball on some of their games, which has left plenty of fans (including myself) disappointed. I’ve played at least 1 Pokémon game/generation, and S/V was nowhere near acceptable. Despite that, I did enjoy Arceus, and I think some of the limitations that come with games released on Switch at the moment is due to the sheer amount of time that it takes to optimize a game on such aged hardware. That being said, there are really no excuses, and I hope we won’t see a repeat of what happened with S/V. Still, Arceus was in my mind a very enjoyable game.

I guess this is all to say, what I find most troubling about your post is the fact that Nintendo has recently released games/worked with studios that developed said games that most people would consider to be objectively good: Pikmin 4, TotK, Shin Megami Tensei V, Fire Emblem Engage, etc…

I concede that you may not enjoy them, but to say that Nintendo is incapable of releasing good games due to the fact that you may not enjoy them is shortsighted, in my opinion.
