@UsurperKing it looks like quite a while has passed, this technology is far more advanced than Xenoblade 1 or 2's societies ever had. Mio is theorized to be the daughter of, or a descendant of Nia, and the other is theorized to be a descendant of Shulk, based on information we were given from leaks about the announcement and everything, original characters would be returning, but the leakers said "at least the ones that would still be alive" as a lot of time passed between the first two and this one. If that old man IS Zeke a very very long time has passed as their aging process is slowed down a lot.

@UsurperKing by younger I think you mean Older perhaps? And I'm pretty sure the old man that looks kinda like Vandham is Zeke. Out of the two games only three main characters(minus their blades) would still be alive at this point. At least one of them is in the game, and that's Nia, at the end of the trailer, its not Mio there. The other masked one, the High Entia is very likely Melia. And then the old man, Zeke, same eyepatch and everything.
