Definitely seems like they did the Nintendo thing where story is a distant afterthought. Mario, Bowser, Peach, Donkey Kong are all archetypes: easy to understand and never changing. And even malleable to an extent. Mario can be a plumber, doctor, golfer, kart racer, carpenter, etc. and it all works fine because there’s no explicit canon or continuity. Is Mario from the real world or the Mushroom Kingdom? Was he a baby when he met Yoshi? Does Bowser have 7 kids or one Jr.? None of it is consistent and that was fine.
But now with young Pauline they made a character with an actual story arc that made her very compelling but opened the door for people to think about the story way more than usual. Now we want to know who she is and how it all makes sense together.
