Like most things from the late '80s and early '90s, the 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up is no longer particularly cool or relevant. Sure, a certain type of ageing nostalgist (guilty as charged) will get excited about Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle or Streets of Rage 4, but the kids have long since moved on to something else. And let's face it, the kids were probably right to. To genre outsiders, your average side-scrolling beat 'em up is shallow, repetitive and deeply dumb – and Mother Russia Bleeds is nothing if not an average side-scrolling beat 'em up, with an extra side order of unpleasantness.
You could always rely on the beat 'em up greats to insert a brief splash of colourful cartoon violence into a drab afternoon. Your muscle-bound hero may have been laying into a group of goons with a length of pipe, but the likes of Final Fight and Streets of Rage had all the grit and cynicism of an '80s cartoon. Mother Russia Bleeds takes a rather different approach. It's self-consciously dark and 'Mature'. That's 'Mature' as in the old cinematic rating, rather than the non-capitalised sense of the word, with the kind of hyper-violent flavour and obsession with grimy dystopia that only a mopey teenager would view as 'adult'.

You play the role of one of four drug-addled thugs breaking out of a Russian cell. Using the neon-green experimental drug Nekro to bolster your attacks and periodically heal your wounds, you must kick, punch, and maim your way ever rightwards.
It's always a little disheartening to find a modern reinvention of a genre that doesn't do anything to drag that genre forwards. Mother Russia Bleeds plays its repetitive action by the book, with a dull selection of characters (a fast one, a strong one and two middle-of-the-road ones) and a limited array of ground and air attacks. There are basic combos and special moves, but nothing even approaches the sophistication of something like Warriors of Fate or Captain Commando from the aforementioned Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle – and those games are going on 25 years old now.

You can pick up weapons to either temporarily augment your blows or fling at your opponents, but that's not a new trick, either. The most interesting addition to the combat engine is the aforementioned Nekro mechanic, and that's essentially just a secondary bar that fuels health top ups or a brief overpowered window of mayhem. Having to harvest that Nekro from certain downed enemies is a neat touch, though.
This being a fairly by-the-books beat 'em up, Mother Russia Bleeds is of course way more fun in local co-op. You can drag three more players into the fray, and the ability to use Nekro to revive downed comrades certainly adds a measure of strategic interest. But it still all feels like a bit of a button-mashing slog that struggles to maintain your interest. The developer has worked hard to mix the levels and boss fights up, but the core action is pretty one-note.
Ultimately, we found that there were only so many junkies, bums and zombie pigs that we could pummel before it all grew rather wearisome. Mother Russia Bleeds plays by the rules set 30 years ago by Final Fight and company, but it then sucks out all of the charm, colour and knock-about joy of that golden period by trying to be as edgy and 'Mature' as possible, without presenting a cohesive or appealing premise.

As tribute acts go, Mother Russia Bleeds is perfectly proficient. If you're someone who's genuinely aching for a classically-styled scrolling beat 'em up and you dig the whole grim aesthetic thing, then there's plenty to enjoy here. But in all honesty, you'd be much better off with a copy of Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle, which provides both a purer and a more sophisticated reminder of why us '80s and '90s kids dug this genre so much back in the day. More recently, titles like Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps and Beans have shown that there's still room for a little creativity in what is admittedly a rather stale genre. It's a shame that Mother Russia Bleeds doesn't offer the same sense of innovation.
Conclusion
Mother Russia Bleeds is a proficiently-made side-scrolling beat 'em up that ultimately fails to drag this already limited genre forwards with any great new ideas of its own. Add in a wearyingly mature aesthetic and you're left with an oddly downbeat button-mashing action game; fans of the genre should wait for the forthcoming Streets of Rage 4 or download Capcom's superb Beat 'Em Up Bundle.

The screens provided are already cringey.
I had my eye on this and then I went to YouTube to watch the first 15 minutes. 5 minutes into it and I belted out “Nope!”
I was looking forward to this game. Happy I read this first. Thank you
To be fair, SoR4 might suck too. We don't know; it's not out yet. But at least it's already easier on the eyes than this mess.
Yeah, this game just reminds me I haven't gotten the way better Beat em up bundle yet...
Fortunately I don't need my brawlers to always reinvent the wheel. I checked out some footage myself, and I'm still on tap for some mindless beatmup action to play along superior or modern brawlers. I'll also say, for what it doesn't do "new", it's still better than some TRULY mindless tripe I've played through in my years, but to each their own. Stays on the backlog and will await a sale
With the great beat-ups in the Capcom Bundle and the ones Hamster has ported, this is easy to skip.
I disagree. I have this on Steam and enjoyed it. While it’s not terribly original, I still found it to be a fun little brawler. The only thing I didn’t care for was the soundtrack. I would give it a 7/10.
This game just looked distasteful to me.
So Manhunt 2 story meets Double Dragon gameplay? That just seems excessively meh. Hope some folks can enjoy it. I was never great at brawlers, to be fair.

Coincidentally, just hours ago, I wrote a novella, praising this game in the comment section:

But, that's just like, my opinion man. I'd disagree with the author, and say that the Capcom Beat em' Up Bundle is full of stale old flawed quarter munchers and do indeed choose Mother Russia over those games. Considering sheer gameplay, I think it's way more sophisticated than Warriors of Fate and Captain Commando. And @cheetahman91 would disagree with me when I say that the soundtrack is as dope as all dopey freshy dope.
Oof! This is one of my favourite street brawlers. Fantastic fun with friends, and hilariously grim. Love it.
In mother Russia, games review you
Cool trailer though.
@KingdomHeartsFan
The SOR franchise holds up for all of the reasons that 99% of the other classic beat em' ups don't.
@hatch
You won credibility when you name dropped Sengoku 3.
Right on!
Yeah this is a better than average game. Not great, but a 6-7 in my book. I played it through in 1 sitting with a friend on PS4 (using the game share feature, which actually worked pretty well) and we had a blast. Probaby not so fun single player, mind.
One guy has a special attack which involves him pooing into his hand and hurling it at the enemy, so yup..7/10.
Coming from someone who found Double Dragon Neo & Wulverblade to both be very boring and regretful purchases.....I absolutely LOVE Mother Russia Bleeds. Love the boss fights.
I only play single player I'll mention (none of my friends like beat em ups!)
I found the combat to be very satisfying and really appreciate the arena levels (I find many beat em ups don't offer other modes beyond the main game so its a nice addition)
If you dig jumping into violent video games just for sake of grotesque and absurd HotLine Miami esque gore, this will certainly scratch an itch as well.
That's a joke right? I bought this one last Saturday and played it with a friend. We were absolutely amused by this title and played it through...a couple of times actually. In our opinion it's one of the best side scrolling beat em ups. I cannot understand this rating and the comments I had to read?!? This game is so awesome!
Reading this review makes me think I will love this game. A lot of the negatives are positives for me.
It actually averagess out to 70 on pc and ps4 so definitely getting this.
I kinda liked the game for what it was. I went for a violent Beat'em up and I got that. I got the feeling that I really broke my enemies when I put them down, that's something I wish other games had.
But yeah, the game lacks the "charisma" of the classic Capcom's titles ( And some other Japanese games of the same genre.)
I actually quite enjoyed this game. The combo system is way more complex than anything in the Beat Em Up Bundle (barring maybe Battle Circuit) and the combat feels really chunky and heavy.
The graphics make it hard to look at for extended periods, though.
This was denied classification in Australia, but the review evaporates any trace of regret I had about this.
This game is awesome. I completely disagree with the review as does all these commenters here who played it.
Need Double Dragon Neon on Switch please
Yeah I’m gonna go ahead and disagree with the reviewer as well. Beat em Up Bundle is one of my favourite games of the year, so while this doesn’t measure up, I don’t expect it to. It plays extremely well and satisfyingly.
The nastiness and the vile shock value are pluses for me too. I had a lot of fun while also feeling gross much of the time.
Easy recommendation.
Rarely comment but I just have to say this game is awesome and a breath of fresh air. Lots of replayability, kinda interesting story and the gameplay is great and a lot of fun. There are a lot of mediocre new beat em ups that have come out in the last decade and this isn't one of them. Highly recommend to fans of beat em up games like Final Fight, Double Dragon or Streets of Rage and to fans of say something like Splatterhouse or Hotline Miami because this game is a like a cross between both of those. Also there is a lot of depth to the combat and stuff you can do.
Easy 8/10
I think I will just get the Beat Em Up Bundle as NintendoLife suggested.
When you open with dismissing the genre of the game it is hard to take the review seriously. Will look for gameplay vids.
Having played this today with my nephews I would recommend this over the Capcom Bundle, especially if you don't have any nostalgia for those games. This game is a blast.
Also the combat has a ton of options, way more then most brawlers.
Hi does anyone know how I can add AI companions in the game
