It’s been a minute since we last got a proper, honest-to-God taxi driving game. Putting aside a couple of questionable mobile spin-offs, Sega’s own Crazy Taxi series has remained dormant for more than a decade. Since then, of course, even the word ‘taxi’ has largely been relegated from the English language for the far less fashionable ‘Uber’ (though we’re fairly confident there will never be a ‘Crazy Uber’ game). The world is a much different place than it was back when Crazy Taxi launched, and the genre has, by and large, gone the way of the Dodo.

Thankfully, Taxi Chaos is somewhat of a ‘spiritual successor’ to the Crazy Taxi franchise. It’s an admirable modern take on the genre, proving that games like this still have a place in 2021 – although we're disappointed to report that its overall appeal is diminished by flawed gameplay, lack of longevity, and a few annoying glitches.
The premise will be instantly familiar to fans of the Crazy Taxi franchise: taking place within the open-world of New Yellow City (which is basically a condensed, cartoon version of New York City), you play as one of two characters – Vinny and Cleo – and you must pick up your clientele and drop them off at their destination in the quickest time possible. The quicker you drive and the more risks you take along the way, the more money you’ll be rewarded from each passenger. Your total fare amount is then tallied at the end of the timed session and displayed via an online leaderboard in the main menu.
New Yellow City itself is surprisingly well-realised. The streets feel dense with buildings, trees, and signposts. Much like the real New York, there’s a large park complete with a pond, and instantly-recognisable locations and landmarks like Times Square and the Chrysler Building. The amount of pedestrians and cars on the road is a bit disappointing, and the city feels a bit dead as a result, but we’ve been assured by the developer that this will be increased in a future patch.

If you’ve ever been to New York, then you’ll know that the road layout is rather like a grid pattern. This is replicated in Taxi Chaos, and as a result, there’s an overall lack of variety or verticality to the world; don’t expect any steep slopes or curving roads like you might see in the original Crazy Taxi or The Simpsons Road Rage. Additionally, the overall space is a bit smaller than you might expect, and although the game encourages you to jump and use ramps to reach new heights, these opportunities are few and far between; it’s a shame, because when you do manage to hop up onto a rooftop, it’s exhilarating and really cuts down on your time.
There are three main modes for you to try out in Taxi Chaos. The mode you’ll likely spend the most time in is Arcade; this is the standard timed challenge in which you drop off customers to earn money, with a handy pointer letting you know which direction to go. Pro Mode is very much the same kind of deal, except there’s no pointer to help you out, so you’ll need to know the layout of the map like the back of your hand to succeed here. The final mode is Free Roam, where you’re free to drive the streets of New Yellow City without the constraints of a time limit; this is great for learning where certain destinations are located, and can then be applied to both Arcade and Pro Mode.

How long Taxi Chaos lasts is largely dependent on how willing you are to climb the online leaderboard. Although we’ve been told that the unlocking process is being tweaked in a patch, there are only seven car models to unlock, and it doesn’t take long to get them all. In addition to the normal taxi rides, there are also hidden items dotted around the city, though there’s little incentive to collect everything. There’s an in-game achievement list that is reasonably extensive, though again, you’ll likely unlock the majority of them just through normal play without realising it.
Graphically, the game looks decent enough, and runs at a smooth, stable pace for the majority of the time (there were just a couple of occasions where our taxi crashed into a building and got stuck, forcing us to restart). With a few more cars and pedestrians in the upcoming patch, we’re sure the city will look and feel much livelier than at present, but nevertheless, there’s a distinct ‘generic’ feel to the visuals that we can’t quite shake. It’s lacking its own voice, and as a result, looks and feels like a lot of ‘cut and paste’ mobile games. The soundtrack, unfortunately, doesn’t fare much better; we’re told more upbeat rock songs will be included at a later date (though don’t expect to see anything from The Offspring), but the music available now is quite simply underwhelming, and fails to inject the experience with some much-needed adrenaline.
Conclusion
Taxi Chaos feels very much like a proof of concept; it's certainly evidence that a taxi game has its place in 2021, though it's lacking that vital spark that would truly make it a must-play title. The city itself is well-made, with plenty of sights to behold, but the overall visual design feels a bit generic and lacks its own voice. There are few incentives to play for extended periods of time, so how long the game lasts is largely dependent on your own willingness to climb the online leaderboard. Nevertheless, Taxi Chaos is an admirable revival of a genre that’s been dormant for far too long, and a good foundation for a potential sequel down the line.

Well, that's a shame. I'm certainly not going to buy it just because I want a Crazy Taxi. Ah well. Ball is in your court now SEGA.
20 years of video game advancements besides graphics is woefully underutilized on this Crazy Taxi successor.
No way, this is worth $35 much less $30.
That more or less lines up with what I was expecting. Not going anywhere near this one myself, especially at that price point.
That's not all I want... That's not all I want at all.
@Aerona Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah!
6!!! Really?!?
The cheap crazy taxi game is actually pretty good and above average?!?!?
I had this down as a 5 tops.
6 seems way too high. But what do I know
I had a feeling this was gonna end up like this. The game already felt like it looked kinda unpolished and the price just felt too high for a game wanting to be like Crazy Taxi, a game that already doesn't have a lot of content. Maybe will get it for a much cheaper price down the road
I might get it when it goes on sale. Wish there was a way to play the Crazy Taxi games outside PS Now
I’ve watched a few videos for this and it just seems as tho something is missing it doesn’t seem as quick and chaotic as crazy taxi and that price come on Sega give us a collection my money is waiting
@Stocksy You'll see next to the number 6, it says "not bad".
That's probably what I'd say if someone stopped me in the street and asked what I thought of the game. I'd shrug slightly and say "yeah, not bad".
Sega were arcade wizards. It shouldn’t be a surprise this lacks their gameplay. I hope other than lawsuits this gets sega to release something other than their 16 but arcade games.
I find it interesting that anything under an 8 is considered unplayable. I feel like 1-3 range should be unplayable, 4-6 nothing too special but could be worth a try, and 7-10 should be good games. Honestly, a 3 point system would work better with the way people read reviews right now. 1=1-6, 2=7-8, 3=9-10
@Olliemar28 yeah it’s not your fault the scoring system is messed up. 6 out of 10 is above average 60%.
50% is bang average.
6 is recommendation to buy. If it isn’t it should be.
Should've had the Offspring songs. Would've been an instant 11/10
$35 USD is an audacious price. I added the game to the eshop wish list, waiting for a sale. I'm interested to see what the patches do for to the game.
Thanks for the review!
"Terrible soundtrack" Easily the biggest crime here, why even make the game if you weren't going to try and replicate the best thing about the original.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I see what you did there with the mile
Really wanted this to be good. I'm gonna hold out and see if those promised improvements make any difference and go from there
@WoomyNNYes Holy hell, this is $34.95?! It looks like a Crazy Taxi clone I'd play on my smartphone.
I remember Crazy Taxi, a higher quality game, getting repetitive after a few weeks of playing. I can't imagine this one, with a lower budget, worse music and not as many features, being any better. Maybe I'll pick it up if it drops to $15 or less.
This is why Sega ending their Sega Ages series makes no sense to me. There are still so many games they could release for the service. Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, House of the Dead, etc.
@Stocksy "what do you know?" Unless you've played it, Jack sh*t 😂
Wow that is a lot of things the developers promised to add later, and should have already included.
I confess I got trigger happy and bought this off the bat for the meagre 10% discount. I haven't gotten round to playing it yet but a shame it seems to have not turned out as good as it should have been. Hopefully they'll patch for at least the glitches. At least the "core" CT premise is there. Loved that game.
This is the second of my trusted review sites that has reviewed at around 6/10.
@Deliesh LOL!
wait for at least half price - won't be long
as usual a developer shoots themselves in the foot by releasing an unfinished product
if it goes on sale for around £10 at some point i might grab it no way am i gonna pay full price for it
@urrutiap looks way overpriced and released unfinished
good reason to rag on it
I wasn't expecting very much, but I would have considered it if it was better than, say, Crazy Taxi (which I wasn't counting on, and I didn't particularly care for Crazy Taxi either).
I'd rather just have a port of any of the old GTAs (from III onward) which come with what amounts to "Crazy Taxi" in the package anyway (and "Crazy Paramedic" and "Crazy Vigilante").
Or a port of The Simpsons: Road Rage. No enhancements. No bells and whistles. Just a straight port of The Simpsons: Road Rage. At least that infuses a bit of personality in to the same concept.
I was excited for this and pre-ordered despite the high price tag. I played for about thirty minutes over lunch, and I was pretty disappointed. It's not objectively bad as it does run smoothly, and the jumping mechanic can be fun when you're able to find a rooftop shortcut, but it all feels a little soulless. The music is really bland, and the sense of speed is a bit lacking. I'll give it another shot tonight and see if anything changes with some of the unlockable taxis, but I'm not feeling very optimistic. Had I known prior to preordering that Crazy Taxi was still available on the PS3 store for $10, I most certainly would have just gone that route.
I called the review score yesterday. Just looking at the trailer and especially those still captures, this game just looks generic and uninteresting.
Who knows, maybe Sega will step up and bring us an actual Crazy Taxi (or other non-Sonic) game from their long-ignored back catalog. Or not...which is exactly why attempts like this one are made in the first place.
Man, I was so looking forward to this.
"Terrible soundtrack"
Well, put some Super Eurobeat songs and start drifting away. 😎
@Oh_Well thanks for sharing, it's good to get another first hand account of how it plays like.
Reminds me a bit of Snakeybus, I picked that one up at launch because I was jonesing for something to scratch that taxi driving itch. It got pretty stale pretty fast, and it's easy to see where a low-budget indie outfit is pushing up against the limits of their own capabilities. But at least it had nice tunes and a few crazy moments.
I’ll wait for it to fly in under 10 bucks on sale. At that point, it may have gotten updates plus I think that’s just the price point that sounds reasonable.
And if I play arcade mode 40 times, then I can just pretend I spent it at an arcade.
I had a hunch this wasn’t going to receive the greatest review and what are they smoking asking $35?? Sega you still have a chance to plug this hole. Crazy Taxi 1,2 Lost in NY and 3 High Roller from the OG Xbox pretty please! Now THOSE 3 I’d pay $35 for the whole bundle!! Cmon Sega Jeez!! So frustrating!!
@kingbk well said!! I’ve been saying this since Sega announced the Ages line was over!! I just don’t get the logic at all! Who’s running the show there?!? Countless Sega classics were left behind. My Ages wishlist was real long! I had some hope after Virtua Racing hit but nope! What a Disappointment!!
Well that’s disappointing. I played the crap out of the original and have been looking for modern versions since. They just don’t exist to the right level of quality. Sega, get on it! Take my money. This company, MAYBE $10, if they patch it up.
@Oh_Well is it really still available on PS3 for $10?? Gotta check that out!! I have CT on my Xbox one and series X via BC but still! 😁
I wasn't really feeling it since the first trailer. I understand if you wanted to make a Crazy Taxi clone, but if you're going to go so far as to state your game as a "successor" to those games then you really need to reach for that same quality. 60FPS, a great sense of speed, maybe break the faux New York map a little so you can include more shortcuts (you know, like what SEGA did in Crazy Taxi 2), and have a rockin' soundtrack (it would also help if the game could be mastered by clearing the map of customers, y'know for Crazy Taxi vets like myself). Improving on the graphics from the old games are one thing, but old school SEGA arcade games were fun, fast (almost all SEGA arcade games from Daytona USA to Let's Go Island ran at 60FPS), had easy and responsive controls, and had hidden layers of gameplay beyond the surface to challenge the hardened gamer. That's a good starting point for emulating the success of tried and true SEGA arcade games.
First comment was spot on with the ball is in segas court now
Crazy Taxi has had rereleases before like on x360 and ps3, and Sega even has virtua racing as a switch exclusive, so why not have more?
Though it probably wouldn't have offspring or a lot if any of the old music, or advertising, but if it's still crazy taxi it's still worth it
Fond memories of my mate telling me about how to really play, using accelerate break and hand break or whatever to boost, crazy taxi had a lot of depth to its mechanics then it first looks
Tbh, half of Crazy Taxi is the soundtrack. That's why I haven't bought any of the rereleases, I just play the gamecube version on my Wii
it should be 5 bucks.
Well that just unfortunate
@tka060681 I'll bite for $4.99
Sega should just release the original Crazy Taxi on Switch, take the PC or Xbox version and port it over, I'd buy that in a heartbeat, regardless of the soundtrack
I wouldn't buy this crap, even if it would cost 1€
Jumping off ramps is one thing but jumping in the air like Super Mario is just strange for a car to do.
