@JoeSooper : Why would they? They run on the same engine (I never understood why the console ports didn't just bundle the first two games together) and you can download the same add-ons across both games (even those originally intended for DOOM II and vice versa).

Qdoom looks pretty cool, gonna check that out. Sigil 2 seems less interesting.

Is there no chance these games can get wireless multiplayer support?

Boosting the frame rate up to 60 (120fps on current gen consoles), and then adding this amazing cornucopia of add ons makes Doom 1993 one of the best new old releases ever. And Quake is right up there in the same lofty altitude! So cool that we keep getting awesome stuff for these games.
EDIT : maybe 120fps on Xbox Series X and PS 5 is only for Quake 1 and 2, I'm not sure. But I was recently blown away at how awesome Doom 1993 looks running at 90fps on Deck OLED. It looks better than Doom 1993 running on my 144fps laptop, which has a non-OLED crappy motion blurry LCD screen.

@awaltzforvenus I remember updating the MIDI player and the music absolutely blew me away - I could tell exactly which songs they were riffing on and it could get you pumped to wade through Hell's legions. It was a magical moment in gaming that I don't think I ever really recaptured.

And I remember the stern warning that those pirating the game would go directly to Hell 😅. I've purchased it no fewer than three times now so I'm probably safe.

I'm playing a shooter called HROT just now on my laptop. A Quake style shooter set in communist Czechoslovakia. It is such a great game. Probably the best modern retro shooter I've ever played.

Just a reminder that all these games have their entire source code available under GNU-GPL, so if you start to feel the itch after playing these add on, there are 1000s of completely legal and absolutely fantastic ways to enjoy DOOM from hundreds of active creators.

@HeadPirate I will add that Project Brutality is a "brutal" Doom mod that is really fun, but also includes a handy pdf on how to apply Doom mods. If you have never done that, do that.

These games have a ridiculous amount of content thanks to all of the free add-ons. Super fun games and solid ports too, especially Quake.

As I've already said, to me Doom is one of the the perfect games. An absolute genre defining perfection in its purest form. There are very few god tiers in the pantheon of games but Doom is one of them.

I recently rinsed both Quake I and II on the switch - so much wonderful extra content!

Very much looking forward to QDoom carnage today! I hope we get the other episodes at some point as well (and yes I'd pay!) but what a way to do retro!

The switch releases of both Q games were worth every penny.

Funny, I was playing Quake the other day so I'll get that add-on now.

It would be good if they could bring back some more old PC games for Switch and other consoles. I would love a complete Commander Keen, Lemmings or Hugo collection remastered with modern graphics.

@Debbiee : I am an absolute Commander Keen junkie (been playing them since I was four), but tragically, the IP is marred with licensing issues.

Keen 6 has been in licensing hell for over 20 years as Keens 4-6 were intended to be a trilogy, but iD Software got greedy and decided to sell Keen 6 separately (which was repurposed as a standalone game when it was originally intended to be the fifth episode) and licensed it to a long-defunct company named FormGen.

It has not been re-released since. Spear of Destiny (the follow-up/prequel to Wolfenstein 3D) was also under a simlar arrangement with FormGen, but that saw the light of day and is currently available to buy, so I don't understand why they left Keen 6 to die if they could have saved that too.

Keen Dreams was under a different licensing arrangement and has since been sold off to God knows how many people. Had I known that the rights were up for grabs, I would have considered buying it myself!

And there is of course the GBC game from 2001, which was released by Activision, and while it was nowhere near as good as the DOS games, any collection would be remiss to exclude that too.

And by Hugo are you referring to the troll character or to the series of adventure games with text-based commands?

This is awesome. Don’t know if the content is any good (yet), but I just love that they’re doing this stuff.

QDOOM is interesting and unique, but Sigil 2 is the star here. Very well crafted and a lot more difficult than the first one. Plus Romero made it.

@Sisilly_G because some Doom wads only work with Doom 2. In this very restricted case, that isn't so.

@JoeSooper Like the first Sigil, it is technically made for Doom 1, but it does not matter which Doom you play it with. It is identical in both games ie. you're not going to get the super shotgun if you play it via Doom 2 or anything like that.

I enjoyed both Doom and Doom II on switch but sometimes when returning to the game from the home menu they would crash. That was really annoying during some of the second game's longer missions.

I didn't know that about Commander Keen but that is really sad and disappointing because I think with the right makers Commander Keen could be successful if they were to bring back the games now and I have talked to a lot of people who didn't discover the games until years later that love playing them. I was also wondering why we only got 'Keen Dreams' on the Nintendo eShop but not the rest of the series but what you wrote about it being under a different licensing arrangement explains it. I hope somebody is able to work out the licensing issues one day and bring the franchise back because there are a lot of people who love 2D Action and Adventure Platform games like that who I think would love it. With Huge I mean the latter with Hugo: House of Horrors, Hugo: Whodunit (where you play as Penelope) and Hugo: Jungle of Doom. I loved playing those games on PC growing up and I was disappointed they didn't make more and would love to see somebody make a new one. I heard 'Nightmare 3D' was a part of the 'Hugo' series but that game was nothing like the first three games and wore more of a first person shooter game like Doom and Wolfeinsten which I am not a big fan of.

I loved a lot of the classic PC and Dos games though like Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Jill of the Jungle, Hocus Pocus, Paganitzu, Word Rescue, Math Rescue, Crystal Caves, Ladder Man, Back to the Forest, Save Our Pizzas, Trolls, Secret Agent, Skyroads, Kye, Jazz Jackrabbit and Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise to name a few and would love to see some of them make comebacks or get re-releases on video game consoles and I was happy when they added Supaplex to the Nintendo eShop.

Theoretically, any DOOM wad, whether they were originally intended for DOOM or DOOM II, are compatible with the console ports, as you can download the same add-ons between the two games regardless of which they were originally designed for.

As for the original DOS versions, WADs are not mutually compatible between the two games if maps are involved as both games are structured differently in that respect (and DOOM II introduces new enemies, among other additions, that did not exist in the first game). Graphical/sound packs, however, are mutually compatible in the DOS games.

I assumed that that's what you were talking about, but when commenting, it dawned on me that there was another brand with the same name (which I'd never played or had an interest in). I have some fond memories of playing the Hugo trilogy with my cousins, and thankfully, I believe I had a CD from a magazine loaded with cheat codes (ah, the pre-internet days), which contained a detailed walkthrough of the games, which really helped us a ton (and taught us what a "dumbwaiter" is ).

Yes, it is indeed a sequel to the Hugo trilogy. It's made by the same guy too (David Gray), and the games are still available via his personal website. Nitemare 3D was quite dated even for its time, having more in common with the aging Wolfenstein 3D than the groundbreaking DOOM (which is still every bit as fun today as it was when it released back in 1993).

I never played (nor heard of) Supaplex growing up, but its art style really intrigued me, but I was never crazy about those sorts of tile-based puzzle games, so I ultimately gave it a miss.

3D Realms (previously Apogee) released an "Anthology" containing most of their classic games, though it's sadly no longer available in that form, but there are modern remakes of Crystal Caves, the superior Secret Agent, and Monster Bash available on GOG (and Cosmo was announced over a year ago, but it's still yet to be released), and I would highly recommend them. Rad Rodgers, also available on Switch, lets you play as Duke Nukem and Cosmo.

Word Rescue and Math Rescue both had "Plus" sequels, but these were self-published by the original designer of the games, Karen Crowther-Chun. I purchased both about 8 years ago, but they no longer seem to longer be available for purchase (maybe she passed away?). The full version of Pickle Wars also appears to be freeware and can be downloaded from her site (Redwood Games).

Jill of the Jungle is freeware and Jazz Jackrabbit is routinely available on sale via GOG (and was even given away for free on at least one occasion), which is excellent, and is everything that Sonic should have been.

Ladder Man instantly reminded me of Soleau Software, but I suspect that the maker of those games, William Soleau, had retired some years ago (and his website closed down, and I'm completely unaware of his current status, so I strongly doubt that his games will ever resurface except as Abandonware/Freeware for PC).

Either way, I can't see most of these games coming to consoles, sadly (unless they are remade).

There was a mobile free-to-play game called "Commander Keen" that was announced a few years ago, but was fortunately cancelled due to strong backlash. It looked absolutely abominable, and it even contained masked profanity and one of the classic enemies dressed as a prostitute. That's a far cry from the Commander Keen that I grew up with!

No idea what had happened to Skunny though (whose last game released in 1995 by a different company).

Still missing that auto-turn feature for the gyro aiming before I'm returning to any of these games.
