Nintendo has today announced that F-Zero will be heading back to the Switch in the form of a 99-player battle royale as F-Zero 99 speeds onto the Nintendo Switch Online library today.
This will only be available for owners of an active NSO membership, but it seems like a pretty good reason to get involved if you have yet to purchase one already.
F-ZERO 99 will see you speeding around courses from the classic SNES title, but accompanied by many, many more racers. Try your best to stay away from obstacles and other pilots or your Power Meter will hit zero and then... boom!
Outrace your competitors and try to take the top spot.
You will be able to speed into F-ZERO 99 on NSO today!
Are you going to be hitting the tracks soon? Let us know in the comments.

Pyoro must be protected at all costs.
This is gonna be crazy chaotic...sorta fits F-Zero. Actually I wonder if this could be a winning format for this franchise going forward. the 99 games have been popular and Nintendo has been looking at a way to make FZero relevant to the market.
I really want them to do more of these! And it really sucks they got rid of Mario 99, maybe Mario wonder 99 instead? Please.
This is the best thing they announced today. I will be F-Zeroing the heck out of you people for the forseeable future.
Don't get me wrong this looks fun but I'd much prefer a remake of the Gamecube game or a new entry, that and we know they'll probably shut it down in a year or two anyway
Offline modes, please
Not the F-Zero we wanted but… hopefully a sign they’re considering a revival?
PURE chaos.
Definitely downloading this.
This looks neat so I may give it a download.
That said, I'm so sorry F-Zero fans....
This looks like a fun take on the original game, with new mechanics that'll actually work online! Will definitely try this out.
Death Race!
This is gonna be a divisive reveal.
With only four vehicle choices, using the original SNES F-Zero probably wasn't the best idea.
This was the show's highlight for me. Will be playing on the SNES controller as I was instructed.
@LadyCharlie I think it's safe to say we finally have a Twitter rando that is legit with their info. 🧐
"Man, I wish they made a new F-Zero game"
monkey paw curls a finger
Do we know if this is a limited thing?
This pissed me off.
We've been waiting 20 years for a new game.
And THIS is all we get?
Talk about a slap in the face.
They could at least have ported the Game Cube or Arcade game.
Plus the tracks looks boring.
@EVIL-C 100% track record so far.
Though I'm sure F-Zero fans will be happy the series is still in Nintendo's minds, I'm guessing this isn't the game people envisioned...
Can't wait for this one to shut down in a year!
really wish we just got an actual f-zero game. what a joke LOL
if this isn't the most 'monkey's paw' moment I've ever seen then I don't know what is

Jokes aside, this looks both absolutely hilarious and a ton of fun. I've loved the 99 series so far and I'll 100% be downloading this when I get the chance!
Aww ...That looks like an absolute blast to play. It might just ...almost ...pull me away from Starfield ...
...Almost.
@TheExile285 Why sorry? I'm a massive f-zero fan and while this isn't the f-zero I would have picked as my first choice, I'm just happy to see a "new" game in 20 years.
This looks a lot of fun but they really should have also dropped a GX announcement, even if just a quick and dirty port like Pikmin 1&2. Felt like raising hope then somewhat dashing it for a lot of fans. Simple GC ports at semi-budget price are a super easy win for Ninty.
For me, and I think a lot of fans, F-Zero is actually predominantly a 1 player experience, challenging yourself to shave milliseconds off your time, or get good enough to beat the track that at first seems impossible.
Turning it into a "fall guys" style experience is super cool as a side project but I don't think it will scratch the F-Zero itch properly for many.
I guess I was right to call it being "monkey-pawed" lmao. Jokes aside...I could've settled for a HD-2D style remake of the SNES F-Zero though. There's an idea for that, right, Nintendo?
Even if this is not what I was expecting, I'm glad they turned Death Race from F-Zero X into an actual game.
My Captain Falcon amiibo will be gaming tonight.
Looks great... GX would've been better though
@EVIL-C Yeah now that I look at the comments, people (here at least) are taking this announcement a lot better than I was expecting.
Looks fun, will try it out, maybe if it's popular Nintendo will consider making a new entry.
And so the monkey paw's finger curls...
This is cool, but I am still not subbing to NSO. I was rather hoping for a remaster of GX or heck, even a brand new F-Zero game.
I mena, I know everyone was hoping for somethign more like X/GX, but honestly it looks pretty awesome! At least they haven't forgotten the franchise completely.
It's like Metroid Prime: Federation Force, or Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival all over again.
Absolutely disappointed with this. Was hoping for a new game or at least a GX remake. This looks utterly pointless. Aside from that fact that I have zero interest in multiplayer, it's almost certain that about 90% of the cars will explode on the first lap due to lack of space for that many vehicles.
This must mean a new F-Zero game will release on Nintendo's next console because that game will need enough RAM for all its glory and awesomeness.
Right, Nintendo? Right....?
Ha ha, I knew it too good to be true.
I'm glad I'm proven right and Nintendo doesn't give a flip about F-zero despite everyone begging for it.
All these remasters and remakes and F-zero GX isn't even considered.
As long as it doesn't close in a few year like Mario 35 or Pac-Man 99 I'm down. They should honestly be making more of these just to give NSO more value.
@TheExile285 I definitely intend on giving it a try, it looks decently fun and chaotic. Plus it's "free" with NSO.
I’m not even an F Zero fan but even I might try this out. Looks chaotic.
Mixed feelings. They seem to be repurposing their arcade race franchises for NSO, with relatively simple titles, like this, or N64 ports, like Wave Race, ExciteBike, and 1080.
F-Zero is back! In Pog form!
@shoeses honestly they probably aren't that easy to make.
I was REALLY hoping for a GX remaster. I'll try this out, but since these "99" games tend to shut down after a year or two, it's hard to get invested
This looks like absolute chaos and I cannot wait to boot it up later tonight. Fingers crossed this is a test release to gauge interest and userbase
Worst direct in years! This was the highlight and my online has just run out, what a joke!!! Too many rereleases and RPG's.
Honestly this is amazing, I know what I'll be doing tonight. Maybe if the response for this is high Nintendo will look into remasters of the previously titles.
I've gone on record to say that F-Zero would be the perfect series for 99 treatment. Let's see if it holds true.
Is this live yet?
@shoeses How long did both of them last?
I hope Nintendo doesn't use this as a way to gauge interest for the F-zero franchise, because that would be a sh****y thing to do.
Honestly, I hope people play F-zero 99 but that definitely doesn't make me feel any less resentful towards Nintendo.
Comments are better than I expected, which is nice.👍
I'm not a racing guy so this doesn't affect me, and my NO ran out last month and haven't had any reason to renew yet, and this certainly isn't it, but Disney Speedstorm is finally actually free in 2 weeks so I have that.
Removed - trolling
Okay Nintendo for the physical release please give us a track editor and the ability to share track to be play online and I will forgive you for not remastering Sega's masterpiece that was F-Zero GX.
@MarioBrickLayer Yes it is, I'm about to take it for a test drive.
Ouch Nintendo... Very ouch. I was holding out hope for the GX remaster till the last second.
Definitely not the F-Zero game many were wanting (myself included), but it still looks to be an interesting game that I'll check out. I just hope it sticks around and doesn't get dropped like some of the other free NSO games
I'm not personally a fan of the F-Zero series, but I thought the lead-in to this was gonna be about a new game or that rumored GX port. While this looks fun and certainly better than nothing, I feel sorry for series fans.
Hopefully if this does very well, Nintendo will consider paying much more attention to the franchise.
Must just be me that's made up for this - the original is still my favourite. Some single player content to purchase would be nice though, such as the BS cups that never made it out of Japan.
Removed - flaming/arguing
This is almost a reason to renew my NSO! If I wasn't so incredibly bloody busy with work and study.
I hope this will stay a while!
Such a great idea, definitely will give this at least a try and also a really appreciated sign that Nintendo still has the F-Zero series in mind!
Today I'm going to come home after work and play this game. It's not the remake of F-Zero GX, but it will be a lot of fun!
WE GOT @BoostPower
TO ALL OTHERS - SEE YOU ON THE TRACK
I WILL DESTROY YOU ALL
I swear this is essentially a beta test to see if NSO members have actual interest in F-Zero. I’ll give it a spin, but, man, I miss Mario 35.
Well F-Zero fans you finally got a new game.
FRIEND @Teksetter, WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS CONCERNING UNSAFE SPEEDS
I LOVE THE SMELL OF WRECKED AND SMOULDERING ROCKET ENGINES
Shame they don't keep all these 99 games running all of the time, they are simple pure genius fun and I find I play these sort of games more often.
yeah they ruined my trust when they took mario 99 away. i wont be wasting much time with this.
it's actually really fun. it controls smoother than I remember the SNES F Zero for. the super boost mechanic is a nice touch.
it definitely has some "just one more round" vibes.
@LadyCharlie Did you download it from the eshop or is it in the NSO "tab"?
Not the GX remaster everyone was expecting but I can't complain about a free game to try out.
My favorite reveal of the Direct, I'm going to download it as soon as it's available. Thank God it wasn't spoiled for me hehehe.
I'm in! Please don't be limited time only...
@MarioBrickLayer It's in the eShop.
@samuelvictor I think F-Zero GX on Switch is only a matter of time. Then the new one will come out hopefully once the series 'gets back on track' 😂
I will be F-Zeroing the heck out of you people for the forseeable future.
@dystome CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
A divisive announcement, to be sure... But at the very least, this is proof that Nintendo still values F-Zero outside of Smash Bros. and re-releasing the original SNES game.
And this is a far better outcome than what happens to other long-dormant IPs, cause at least it's still F-Zero at its core.
F-zero is back in F-zero 99. İ have Heard about the rumours so İ was expecting a F-zero Remake but not the F-zero from the Super Nintendo but it is very good.
@Waluigi451 I definitely thought you were about to say “…but the FZero we needed” 😂
@Jamie_R Oh I agree it seems innevitable. It just should have been anounced at the same time as this, to avoid certain fans feeling burned by '99 rather than amused and intregued. I'm not saying that I personally am angry/annoyed, but I can forsee many people being so... and that seems unnecessary and easily preventable.
Definitely have to try this one. It looks super hectic.
Dreams crushed… why oh why?
Why Nintendo? Why do you keep neglecting modern F-Zero?
Why can’t we have something akin to GX?
Free it from the SNES chains of captivity!!!
Fine… I’ll play just because I feel the IP is at gunpoint right now
“Play this or we shoot the hostage!!”
Just like you did to Advance Wars 😡😡😡
@ChumChum correction, I just played it, it's incredible
It's not GX, but it's at least something that looks fun. I'll be fine I promise 🙃
@-wc- Yeah but remember that one was expected to be gone as it was only a one time anniversary experience and they made that very clear when they release it. This one is not tie to any anniversary limitation, it seems Nintendo is banking on this to test interest for a new online F-Zero game. Also it only looks like the Super NES game, it plays more akin to F-Zero GP Legends and Climax for the GBA in that you could use boost turbo at anytime after the first lap by sacrificing a part of your power meter unlike in the Super NES original where you earn limited boost turbo and they don't drain the power meter.
Remember the fan game super Mario kart 99? Maybe a little push in the right direction? 😉
Way more exciting that another Gamecube rerelease would've been.
Would have preferred a GX remaster but I'll def give this one a shot.
Mario kart 99 next please
Nah, NES Remix 99 Next please!
F-Zero at home.
that's nice... but I'd still rather see Mario 35 return
This is not the F-Zero any of us wanted, especially not me as an F-Zero fanatic. Sorry, Nintendo, I'm still not subscribing to your online extortion racket! $30 to play a 30 year old game is ridiculous. A remake of F-Zero X - easily the best of the series and most deserving of a modern update - is the lowest I'll accept. Preferably would want an ultimate F-Zero version that includes new tracks, old tracks, and all playable split screen and online.
Fun game. I placed 6th on my first online match. I might have some potential Maybe theyre testing the waters to see how many people are interested in F-Zero.Hopefully, we will receive a proper release one day.
Obviously not the F-Zero folks were clamoring for. But I guess the positives would be:
-Hopefully, it's fun.
And
-Maybe it's Nintendo's way of testing real fan interest in the IP
@RainbowGazelle Difference is this game is actually good and fun to play
This game looks really nice, it's not what we wanted but after so long I'll HAPPILY take it.

@Yosher Took the words straight out of my engine
When this trailer first came up I was like, " Oh man, they're FINALLY about to announce a new F-Zero!!!!" Then, as the "F-Zero 99" title and theme was revealed, I thought, "That's okay, this is just a lead-in before they show the REAL new F-Zero game everyone's been waiting for immediately after". Then the "Only for SO subscribers" came up, and the trailer ended...and then no new F-Zero announcement.
So basically Nintendo just trolled the entire F-Zero fanbase here. Sorry guys, I've got WAY too many current great games to play to bother with a retconned SNES title that's locked behind a subscription to boot (and which will almost certainly disappear later anyway like the previous "99" games). Let me know when you have an actual, new F-Zero to play...or don't even bother anymore.
@Waluigi451 Exactly what I was going to say. Not the F-Zero I wanted, but at least they are doing something with the franchise. I'll play this and purchase the dlc in hopes it encourages Nintendo to make something new.
This was actually an amazing surprise. I think its a test to see how everyone receives it, before they even start on a new fzero lol.
Couldn’t be more monkey pawed
This is a mess the tutorials portray a completely different game and don’t get the player ready at all for the constant barrage you get in the real online mode.
This looks brilliant. I've loved all the "99" games. This makes it no less likely we'll get a proper F-Zero, so it's win-win
Almost 20 years for a proper F-Zero game and we get a 99 series. As I am glad the series is in Nintendo's mind, this is Force Federation all over again
I honestly wasn't expecting anything from F-Zero. I'm really happy to see this. It's not at all what I was expecting, and that's quite alright.
Seeing a new Contra that doesn't look terrible was also ice-cream next to a cake for me.
I'd much rather Death Race from F-Zero X be given this treatment, but at least it's... something?
I'm not a huge F-Zero buff or anything but this looks great and I can't wait to play. The fans, though... They've been starving for decades and Nintendo finally serves them a single baked bean on a fancy platter. It'd be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Still, that's one tasty-looking bean.
Not exactly what we wanted but in a way it does point to another F-ZERO game on Switch 2. Surely this will cause more limelight on F-ZERO to put it in Ninty's attention.
It is so chaotic I love it. Haha. Do Super Mario Kart next.
I don't know about everyone else but I love the Mode 7 F-Zeros and 99 has been a blast so far. It controls really tightly and brings over the boost and spinning mechanics from X and GX, so it doesn't just feel like an SNES port.
@CANOEberry Looks fun, I will try it after I finish wiping my tears...
@LadyCharlie
I get how ppl like to rely on these leakers and everything but they aren’t doing much other than acting as spoilers! I get the instant gratification and FOMO of todays world but it’s not like Pyoro is doing anything noble. That’s just me though, there are few surprises in life and I know Nintendo tries their best to keep surprises for its gamers. The Direct was a good one but with all the pre hype we are over obsessed with access to info these days.
Best announcement of the show!
@Rainz Leaks of video game announcements aren't spoilers. They are announcements of other announcements. They are commercials for commercials.
@LadyCharlie Is it going too be one of those games where after you download it and after a year once it's pulled from the Eshop you can't play it anymore?
Honestly not enjoying it much at all having just spent the last couple hours picking at F-Zero 99. The format is just predictably messy; not varied enough to hold my attention, and the outcomes are almost always decided by the time you leave the entry point into the track itself. Makes the 'chaos' of the crowd feel predictable and nonswaying, like tedious freeway traffic.
I'll just sit here and keep sourly spitting venom over the closure of Mario 35
I think it’s pretty bloody good. I’ll have to get My Wii out to play F zero Gx for a bit longer.
I’m rubbish at it but I love it .
That’s annoying but this game is a fun addition to the franchise and a good way to get new people into F zero 👍🏻
Neunundneunzig Blau Falcons
I just want Mario 35 back, I keep seeing these 99 games and I can instantly tell that it'll have the same problems I've had with the past games.
I still will not sign up for switch online!
To me, the value isn't there.
Really happy to see this and will give it a try later. Hopefully it gets a good reception, seems like a low cost way for Nintendo to see if anyone is still interested in the series.
@Shiro28 @YoshiFR2 @EVIL-C @Exerion76
It has only been ELEVEN years since the last F-zero game!
If you are calling this an F-zero game then Captain Falcon's Twister Race from 2012 counts as well!
Just because you didn't buy a WiiU doesn't mean they didn't try something.
Well, it's slightly better than when they left the Metroid series dormant for years and brought it back with Federation Force...
A game that will be fun for a few matches and won't be playable after a year. At this point they are using the corpse as a puppet.
This definitely wasn't the announcement people expected, but I hope it leads to something bigger soon. At least this is something new.
I don't know, looks like it's going to a be a bit of a cluttered mess. As much as i love the original F-Zero, an upgraded version of GX would of been a better fit.
@LadyCharlie
It’s still a leak no matter how u paint it
I’ll give this a spin. Don’t know if I’ll be any good but I’ve at least played the SNES original and I want to show support for this neglected series. Maybe it’ll be a small step toward something greater?
You can tell they updated the visuals. They look like a souped up SNES game.
Very happy to see F-Zero return after almost 20 years. Going to try this out after work.
Lots of "ah-ha, na-na!" comments. To each their own. It may not be the new F-Zero that I hoped for but I am totally fine with the craziness of this and still wanted to play F-Zero online in some kind of way against others. I feel like this is also a quick and dirty way for Nintendo to gauge the true interest of F-Zero, so I am fully on board with it if it means there's a chance the F-Zero love will increase from Nintendo into the future. Off I go...
Have to admit I’m still a little disappointed (still want that GX remaster 🥲) but I downloaded it and it looks like there’s a lot of love being put into the game. Since F-Zero is relatively niche I hope there’s enough people playing it to make it last a while, it would be a bad move for the franchise to die again. Besides it does look fun, I’m just glad Nintendo is finally acknowledging the series in some way!
I played a little over my lunch, and I thought it was pretty fun! It feels right too. As someone who put a LOT of time into the SNES F-Zero, I know the tracks, and the shortcuts, etc. I'll be playing this a bit for sure.
Pyoro leak hints at F-Zero 99
'Ooooh F-Zero is back'
Nintendo reveals F-Zero 99
'Noooooooo! We got what we were expecting. This is Nintendo's fault and not mine for jumping to conclusions'
@samuelvictor Porting GX to Switch is almost impossible because the Switch doesn't have built in analog triggers. The game would require to use a GC controller to be fully playable, that's not acceptable.
@F_Destroyer Holy crud you're right! I completely forgot about that. Why did I not see anyone mention this when everyone was so sure it was coming? (granted I've barely been online recently) Maybe a gyro solution or 2nd analogue stick option could work...
The lack of analogue triggers in both the Switch and Wii U is a major bugbare for me and beggars belief really. If they had them, I think Nintendo's Pro controllers would have been the best standard controller of each generation. Its an insane ommision considering they had them back on the 'Cube.
@Ade117
Eleven
I'm loving this new entry. The most fun I've had playing a F-Zero game
@samuelvictor Exactly, a lot of people are screaming to get GX on Switch, but those one doesn't know how to play GX properly, or forgot with the time, it would not work as it is.
@Exerion76 The learning curve of X or GX is so steep compared to the original. There's a reason why the F-Zero series hasn't continued while Mario Kart has kept going on and on. When it comes to pickup and playability, the original and the GBA version are the best at that.
Ive always found any f zero game to be boring but this looks really fun. I cant believe I was more excited over this than the mario kart trailer.
@Spider-Kev I assume you're counting the F-Zero minigame in Nintendo Land.
@Ade117
Absolutely, I am.
It's a fair idea. It pushes the IP to relevance. newcomers and fans open to playing it will. New F Zero in the future? I'm not big on a tactic like this to get an IP to relevance but has to be done.
It makes sense, I prefer more structure to the games then quick in and out but it makes sense to structure it quick in and out survival, push the IP and make it quick for people wanting that quick in and out multiplayer rush. I have no interest in that at all but for those people that like quick experiences to play on and off sure go for it.
If we get a new F Zero out of it sure, if not then well it was a dead end for people into quick bite sized games then the IP having maybe a sizeable increase of sales/fans but probably not much for a new game/GX remaster ever depending how people go.
I think 99 players makes sense though F Zero always had many opponents it fits and the survival aspect of the games was always there without weapons even just your driving and shields it holds up for sure, but the cosmetics/new path mechanic while the mechanic is cool. I don't understand the structure?
Is it just the same tracks looping like the segmented levels of Mario 35? I assume so to make it quick, cheap to produce and easy to get in and play.
No lobbies or the whole game reworked to have such a focus on multiple 99 player groups of the cups. I assume it's 1 cup and the tracks cycle or a handful of tracks cycle from any cups to form a strict lineup to flow in difficulty (easy or hard or balanced they were thinking for it, maybe just the first cup over and over as assuming the easiest courses and easy to cut off the rest of the game to focus on those).
It's not for me I think it's pretty cheap and boring but for a quick battle royale (I mean elimination/survival modes I hate the battle royale term it's literally elimination modes in racing games or other things (yes yes hunger games or others I get it) who cares but whatever a trending word people will jump to) with old games sure it makes sense to develop it that way.
Racing games always have quick or sometimes lengthy tracks, lap counts and more factors so they always fit the handheld or console format depending what tracks, what lap counts, challenges/categories to focus on for vehicles even and more used to work around the elements in the games.
(the reason I like many racing games with strict part/vehicle requirements whether country, parts, tuning, stock, year, one make, whatever in simcades or how WipEout 2048 did the strictness of no weapons, weapons, this ship type only, etc. even if I didn't think much of it until thinking about it more as the past games were so open ended and just varied event types then more strictness in that 2048 way)
Or if a game has weapons/vehicle types differ what challenges/categories but here it's plain and simple and makes sense why to flow better/quick survival.
Even Mario 35 I'd have gone well why not the whole game to see who can beat it and where they reach makes sense and a score showing where people made it then just cycling a few segments of levels and that's it.
It works and looping around can make things good or bad in their own way to get good at the game or mess up at points but still.
The whole game would be like a speedrun and seeing where people mess up along the way/placed on the journey through all the levels as if an 'if I die I have to restart' kind of challenge, but nope.
I hope people show up for this. I know it's not what everyone wants, but it looks pretty fun and maybe if it gets players they'll make a new one.
This looks like it would be chaotic but a lot of fun to play.
Loving fzero99 so far. I think i need to avoid direct spoilers next time. Its no very exciting when you know every single notable thing they'll show. Definitely not worth staying up to 1am for and ruining a workday
Looks like SNES F-Zero but controls are insanely sensitive. I owned F-Zero when I got my SNES in the 90s, I know Mute City in my sleep and I can barely make that last turn in this game. I'm randomly getting anywhere between top 5 and not even placing. It's insanely random. I keep trying these "99" games Nintendo puts out but none of them stick with me more than an afternoon.
@RainbowGazelle oh its not THAT bad like i get it but come on, AMIIBO FESTIVAL?! thats just downright cruel
@LikelySatan my guess is that thats the idea
@epicgamner You're right. It's not as big a violation of trust as amiibo festival was.
It’s neat but, I kinda wish they didn’t put in the mechanics of GP Legend and Climax. It’s my own fault for ignoring GP Legend for almost 20 years.
Plus since I’ve played more of Maximum Velocity over other installments that “A accelerate B Brake is ingrained in my playing style.
Kudos to those that can play with “B Accelerate and Y Brake.”
Games a blast to play! Freaking rad dude!
So close and yet so far. We want a mainline offline game you maniacs.
Why not have the best of two worlds? Completely new High Res title AND 99 player multiplayer. Maybe they are saving it for Switch 2. One can dream.
"F-ZERO" come on screen. I get goosebump chills of excitement!
And then...this. Oh. Well. I'll play it. But...
I don’t see how anyone can be angry at this. It’s like being angry at Super Mario 35 for not being Super Mario Wonder. We got Mario 35. Then we got Mario Wonder. And now we have both!
…Except we don’t, because they took Mario 35 down, but that’s besides the point. The point is that we still got Mario Wonder!
If anything, F-Zero 99 makes it more likely — not less — that we could get a proper new entry in the series as it shows that Nintendo is at least touching the franchise again. If 99 proves popular, it could give Nintendo an incentive to work on a proper mainline entry.
Whining because you get something that’s not the thing you want despite the fact that it in no way replaces the thing you want and there was never any evidence you would get the thing you want in the first place is… deep breath not a very level-headed response.
I was so excited when I saw an F zero logo, ive wanted a new game in this series cor so long.
This however, is not the game I wanted and tussling with a track full of other vehicles is not the F zero experience that made me love the game.
I hope those of you excited for this enjoy it, but this signals the death of this franchise for me.
Nvm, plenty of fantastic other titles that do appeal to me 😁
Checking in the morning after, I'm sorry to say I'm not surprised at the reaction to this. Some folks are happy to get something new to play as a free toss-in to their subscription, and it seems an equal amount prefer to complain about it not being the precise thing they wanted. It must really be awful to work for Nintendo: great games, poor games, free games ... they all get the same negative response.
Why are so many people being so negative with this reveal? I've already played about three hours of this. It's a great time that gives you the F-Zero racing experience you can't get anywhere else. High-speed chaos with 99 people that somehow doesn't become an absolute mess as I can consistently place in the top 30 in 90% of my races.
I feel like it essentially captures what I imagine F-Zero would be like in-universe. A tight high risk death race where everyone is neck and neck with a single mistake costing you greatly. Also I think the SNES visuals are the best way to capture it on this scale without any dip in performance.
Sure it's not a new F-Zero, but let's be real everyone, Nintendo ain't going to just invest in a series that peaked on the SNES when Mario Kart is literally right there and makes money hand over fist. Plus this isn't a Pachinko machine, this is an actual game with new assets, vehicle customisation, a diverse set of unlocks/rewards and several game modes with the ability to practice individual courses in F-Zero SNES to get the best time which certainly can be fun. This is the first F-Zero game with online play, that's more than the slap in the face that Federation Force was.
I can't even call this a cash grab since it essentially comes with the online that most people already pay for and there are no micro-transactions or lootboxes (I know, the bar set by AAA games these days is low). It just seems like a nice use of an old franchise to bolster the Nintendo Online system. It really doesn't feel half-baked and I think it's more indicative that Nintendo still can and wants to use the series. I mean after Metroid FF we eventually got Metroid Dread, Prime Remastered and Prime 4 in development.
I imagine if you played GX on release and have been waiting since then it might sting a little but this is definitely not an L for the F-Zero fanbase. Well... we may just have to see how long the playerbase sticks around for.
@Exerion76 I don't disagree, but I will say that it seems pretty clear that Big N doesn't want to release a game that would compete with Mario Kart. The Battle Royale model gives F-Zero its own space, which could be great news going forward.
i would be OVER THE MOON for this if it were the same game as a standalone release. id pay 40. GOTY.
as it is, im mildly excited to have an ephemeral fzero experience to enjoy. it is what it is. 👍
@Supaguy And whenever Nintendo does get around to releasing a new F-Zero, the same folks will complain about the track selection, customization, graphics, price ... whatever. There are people who are still asking for more characters for Smash Ultimate, for crying out loud. Reggie Fils-Aime once called Nintendo fans "insatiable" in a remark he presented as praise but, in that it was responding to a matter of this type, clearly demonstrated an irritation with a good many gamers never being pleased with what they get.
@Spider-Kev I did buy the Wii U and no the F-zero game in Nintendo Land does not count. That's like saying the F-zero stages in MK count as an F-Zero game. F-Zero GX and even GP Legend came out 20 years ago, those were the last true F-Zero games (at least in the west). F-zero 99 is not what I wanted or many F-Zero fans did not wanted. But it is something and is staying true to F-Zero while innovating it...somewhat. At this point, I have given up. With this game out I don't think we'll see an F-Zero game even in the new system, and that's because Nintendo will probably promote MK 9 heavily since that's their money maker
@CANOEberry
CB you’re so stoked for this retro F-Zero treat! You remind me of an old TMBG song I like:
“You’re a wicked little crittah with a sissy bah,
And you lay a patch on the tah”
(Must be sung with Boston southie accent)
I suck at F-Zero but maybe I’ll bump into you on the track sometime!!

How is the NintendoLand version any different from what I just quoted you?
@Teksetter WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE LAKE 2 HOURS AGO, BUT MY PARTY-ANIMAL COMPATRIOT SLEPT IN. SHE DESERVES NO FALL COLOURS.
I suck at F-Zero but maybe I’ll bump into you on the track sometime!!
PILOTING F-ZERO MACHINE TO VICTORY A SERIOUS MATTER, A TRUST - BUT I WOULD NOT KNOWINGLY AIM A KO AT YOU
old TMBG song I like
THAT IS SOME PRETTY FUNKY STUFF, I RATHER LIKE THAT
(Must be sung with Boston southie accent)
[Inhales deeply]
That accent is not often heard in these parts (are they just putting it on, though?). The cultural references in there made me wonder, and I found this explanation:
Well, OK, that last part has been true sometimes - I can be gentler when I'm not on the track. But I hope to earn "critta" status in the most honest way.
I still haven't been to Boston proper - I haven't even been to New England in ages and ages... my life is pretty full right now, but I miss my more carefree traveling days. On a hike this summer I came across a plaque with an awesome quote from Henry David Thoreau, who I've been meaning to read for ages, so I have some good "Americana" stuff awaiting me when the lakes freeze...
Actually I never liked F-Zero, but this is quite fun. Also I think F-Zero will be one of the launch titles for Switch 2 next year around end of march. Would make a lot of sense. Maybe a bells-and-whistles remaster or something entirely new. This is probably to gauge interest.
Most other recent Nintendo games will probably be cross-generational anyways, so they need something "completely fresh" for the new thing.
I also think the gamecube Zelda games will make an appearance on the new hardware early in it's life because the mainline Zelda AAA game dropped so recently.
@Spider-Kev Because the f-zero in Nintendo Land is a minigame with a F-zero Theme not a full on game.
@Shiro28
99 is less of a game than the NintendoLand one.
@Spider-Kev At this point you're just trolling. I can't take you seriously after a comment like that. Have a nice day, peace
