Free-To-Play Shooter 'Rogue Company' Ends Service On Switch In June

So, another free-to-play game, takes peoples money and turns off their system, what a surprise.
Ah wait, isnt that what Nintendo did with the 3DS and Wii U eShops?

Free-2-Play games are always a scam.
Don't ever support that business practice.
Let those games died, tell to the developers that we hate free-2-play games.

@Bunkerneath you didn't pay for eshop skins and such, you bought games there you still e-"own" and still have access to. That's different. Your 3ds and/or Wii U weren't shut down. Although, admittedly, turning on a Wii U is depressing without Miiverse and all that, the console is still running games.

It was a good game. Enjoyed my time with it. Glad Rocket League is still here. Lots of fun, that game!

@Anti-Matter I don't, there are genuinely nice games among them, that kind of serve as a massive free demo you can pay for if so desired and show off what you paid for. I don't do that, but I still like a massive demo of a good game, technically completely there. I could do without the constant flashing of paid options and stupid timers, but I don't think it's, as a rule, worse than paying up front full price for a product that could be utterly disappointing.

I had no idea this was even on the Switch, I must have been pretty crappy to never hear anything about it.

Hmm so instead of trying to get the game to their standards they released it as is and will now walk? That’s gonna sour some goodwill with the folks this impacts.

The port was too Low Rez and was deemed off-brand.

Maybe this is the reason why MultiVersus didn't get a Switch version, and no word of a Switch version for the full launch in 2024.

People say "Why would I play a crummy Smash Bros. ripoff when I can play the real deal?", but the other Nickelodeon game sold more on Switch than all the other versions.

Sakurai wanted Ultimate to have Rex & Pyra fighting together like the Ice Climbers, but the Switch was not powerful enough, they have plans for potential triple characters like the Powerpuff Girls and the Warner Siblings (Animaniacs).

This is certainly an oddity, discontinue the Switch version, but not the other consoles and PC. Kind of surprise since this game actually ran at a smooth 60FPS last time I played it. Was unaware of the other issues

That always surprised me with Hi-Rez, this and Paladins ran 60FPS on Switch. Though I find myself playing Paladins more, at least I play on PC too (their cross-progression is great).

@Anti-Matter Personally, for online multiplayer games, I prefer F2P, because you're not forced to pay a subscription like Nintendo Switch Online to play F2P online games. Online multiplayer the way it should be.

Also in event I can't renew NSO because of financial reasons or whatever, I can still play F2P games with my friends.

It was a fun game that had a lot of clever ideas. But dang the player base was empty.

I played it for a bit, was decent enough. Not much in the way of unique ideas, but solidly executed.

@CharlieGirl Live services are a crapshoot, even if they are good, competition is fierce, and if not enough people are playing them, they shut down and no one can play them anymore.

All live services should do what Knockout City is doing, the game is becoming a product, players can make their own servers without needing the developers.

Hi Rez is a company that exists simply to chase whatever trend someone else creates. tldr: who cares.

@sanderev Why? Gacha games are marvellous and they never hurt anyone. I am still devastated 2 weeks after hearing PriCone will be gone.

Guess I still prefer old fashioned way of gaming without f2p practice.
I didn't even see any worthiness from f2p games.
I prefer paid games in physical with everything inside the disc / cartridge. That's a joy for me.

I prefer watching the gameplay first from YouTube before purchasing games in physical rather than trying f2p games.
F2P games are free, but I will not fall into that traps.

@ComfyAko MultiVersus is closing for 7 months, the real launch happens in 2024, if Warner Bros. doesn't pull the plug like they did with many other projects in movies and TV.

When the game comes back, it's time to ditch most of the F2P live service elements and focus on a strong offline mode + single player campaign.

I can't really understand why people are glad that something is gone. I don't like many things, but I wouldn't tell others not to enjoy it or be happy they cannot enjoy it anymore

@Anti-Matter That's great, I like traditional games too and still play them, but I'm talking specifically online multiplayer games like this one.

Want to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online, you have to pay $20-$50 a year just to play online on top of the $60 for the game. F2P on Switch don't require NSO for online, so people can play without paying online the fee. While people who pay for their games, are stuck with paying a recurring fee to simply unlock a feature in a game they already paid for.

@ComfyAko This. I can't count how many times I've seen this online. If anything, people who like said game (or series that gets canceled) like the game and they're having it taken away from them. I'll never get this mindset.

@Sunsy yeah, it might be nothing for us, but there are other people who enjoy it and it's not like it's hurting anybody. Some people care about others' tastes way too much

@Ryu_Niiyama why should they when it would take much more time/money to make a quality version on switch compared to newer systems when the switch playerbase is probably extremely small. Doesn't make sense, and if you want to play online shooters you probably aren't gonna be playing on switch.

What F2P games are thriving on Switch? Probably just Fortnight?

@Greatluigi I thought I was the only one. Pricone is the mother of all gacha games, but I tried a couple. The ones that are still intact are Touhou Lostword and Kemono Friends 3 jp server

@Anti-Matter I don't think the option of actually playing a game yourself, and then paying whatever you think it's worth and getting some extra stuff for it, is bad in any way. Watching gameplay does not mean it won't still disappoint.

And the trap is paying, not playing. I play for free, and that is a good thing when I enjoy it, no loss at all if I don't. For example, Asphalt 9 was fun, Warface gave me many hours of online fps gameplay for zero money in any currency, and Dauntless and Warframe and several others seem like they could be a lot of fun, I just didn't get into them. And there's many more, where as long as you don't pay, you're not losing anything on them, and there's no point in hating them.

I played sixty euro games in the past that were over after three disappointing hours that LOOKED interesting on youtube, and zero euro games I enjoyed for a hundred hours.

Maybe because I still have mindset to play with actual things, not by digital form as I have a few of digital only eshop games for my Wii U, 3DS and Switch but I never touch them anymore after i bought them and played them 1 - 2 times for several minutes.
There was one 3DS eshop game Dillon Dead Heat Breakers USA version I played quite a lot until once I got the physical copy in PAL version, I stopped playing the eshop version.
It was like I don't feel the presence, the presence of being digital only was not genuine for me.
Because of that mindset, I never like to get into handphone gaming with f2p practice on it, even the paid one I still have zero interest with them because it has no physical games.
N-Gage was the only handphone games that have physical cartridge, but alas it was too archaic for my taste.
I still keep my basic rules, No physical games = no play.
I really persistent with my words, don't give support to f2p games.
Kill them and pretend they don't exist.
I don't want to enjoy the freebies stuffs with micro transactions behind the games.
I considered them as a scam.
That was my bold statement and I will not change a thing.

I had never even heard of this game and I'm a regular on the eShop, PS Store, Xbox Marketplace, and Atari Shop. I also own every well known popular and unpopular consoles (except Xbox One and PS1) under the moon so this is news to me.

@victordamazio Rex and Pyra fighting together at the same time by one player is pointless though, why would anyone want their main character being reduced to just a second rate CPU control assist trophy? I rather prefer Rex been his own playable self in the next Super Smash Bros. game. If it's a smaller minor character like Popo, Toad, Tails, Choi from KOF, Kazooie, the Luma, Rush from Mega Man, Cheese the Chao, Navi the faerie, or the duck in Duck Hunt then I could see the point but Rex is a full fledge character, he don't need to be assisting anyone.

If I had a pound every time a game thats reliant online is taken away and they say “it’s not been an easy decision” I’d be a rich man I’ve read it three times today.

@Anti-Matter While there are issues with the F2P model, game developers have become more conscious about building fair transaction models than were available 15 years ago. Many games are now using F2P as a means to support players with new skins, which is what Hi-Rez does with Paladins and Rogue Company. It’s no where near as egregious as Gunz Online or Combat Arms where the premium purchases quite literally dealt 10-15% more damage than the free ones.

@Anti-Matter I have to disagree completely on this statement. I think there is definitely a place for F2P games in the market, it pretty much breaks the entry barrier and allows more people to play a game they normally wouldn't (or can't) pay for. Now the problem isn't the model itself, its the greedy businesses that are trying to make a quick profit and using pretty much psychology and gambling practices in their games to manipulate their consumer base which should be illegal but its not, at least here in the US. Things like this need to be brought up in politics but of course they are not because these big companies are making billions a year off of manipulating their consumers. There are some F2P titles that shine IMO which aren't very many but right off the top of my head there is Leage of Legends and all of Riot's F2P games which have very fair business models and also Warframe. I would add Multiversus to that list but the content just isn't there for that game, at least not yet. But I will say yes don't support the greedy businesses

It's a shame that people tend to hate blindly "free to play" games. There's room for these type of games and they are a good option for many people and there's also many good titles. While some have predatory models, there's many fair ones and in the end it's a matter of the customer not being dumb with his money. As always, ignoring these kind of games isn't enough and many try to boycott and harass people that enjoy them without having any clue of the product that they are attacking and why they have to be that way.

The game was already dead with a nonexistent playerbase back around when it first showed up on the Switch. I'm surprised the game is still online at all.

Rogue Company is one of my favorite games on Switch. After I had heard that it will be gone, I tried to link my Nintendo account with my Xbox account on Rogue Company's website and Nintendo wasn't even an option anymore. I'm really sad and upset because all of my progress will be gone in June. 😭

@Serpenterror Even if you think that way, Sakurai wanted Rex & Pyra to be a tag team, plus, you could just press a button to switch to Pyra as the one in the front.

And my point is that Warner Bros. has characters like the Powerpuff Girls, the Warner Siblins and Ed, Edd and Eddy that could be not just double fighters, but triple fighters.

In Smash, we didn't get the Chorus Kids likely for that reason.

@Anti-Matter I understand the urge for physical, I have the same and always love a game with a manual more than mostly empty boxes, and lose interest in digital downloads much quicker. And the N-Gage was kind of a disaster but it was indeed cool it did have boxed games still. To me, every concept of trade is a possible scam.

And I can respect that you stick with your vision, I recognise myself in that as well.

Its getting to the consoles time of life when the Switch isn't strong enough to run F2P games anymore.
I imagine this is getting dropped on Switch to help push numbers for the upcoming mobile port to save maintaining 2 servers for 2 handheld versions.

Free to play games have a place and are clearly quite popular otherwise they would all die out entirely.
And whole argument physical vs digital well I prefer to have physical but if its 60 physical and 20 digital on sale or because its no longer being made I'm going digital.
Also if you like physical grand but stop pretending your superior to someone else that goes digital they both have pros and cons and most of us are mixing them.

Many games released as physical games are still live services, if servers close, your game becomes a paperweight, it happened to Overwatch 1 that at least got a free sequel, and Babylon's Fall which didn't get any sequel.

@victordamazio I'm aware of that but every comment section on these issues has people go this is why I only do physical which is as you point out not really the point.

Aw man, even if I didn't play much of this game it looked and played promising. Makes me curious on how the live service model is gonna end up with other games like this one getting shut down...

This is one of the better f2p shooters out there but sadly it didn't become as popular as other offerings from bigger AAA studios. I have a lot of memories playing this game during the pandemic and even met people online that led to gaming sessions on other games as well. Sad to see it leave the Switch but totally understandable as the playerbase continues to dwindle by the minute. Good thing I have cross save on my Steam and PS4 accounts so I get to keep the Rogues and skins I've earned.
