The second trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie has just dropped, and it's jam-packed full of references, characters, and moments that series fans will love.
Most importantly, if the leaks and yesterday's tweet from Nintendo didn't give it away, we got our first look at Princess Peach. Voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy — who made a brief appearance during the Direct — it looks like the Mushroom Kingdom's ruler is going to be taking part in the action, as she absolutely deserves to.
Also joining Peach in the trailer is Donkey Kong, played by Seth Rogan (who revealed he owned a Playchoice 10 and has a dog named Zelda!). Donkey Kong looks to be an enemy — at least initially — taking on Chris Pratt's Mario on top of some iconic red girders.
We also got a much better look at Luigi, who only made a brief cameo at the end of the first teaser. Take a look at some shots from the movie!
What did you think of the new trailer? Are you excited for the film's release next year? Let us know in the comments!

Mario kart movie!!!! Great ending to the trailer hahah
my god it looks amazing! And chris actually sounded good imo! i loved it!
I love love LOVE that Peach isn't damseled and gets to be part of the action!
Taylor-Joy's voice is perfect. She sounds regal and refined, without being cloyingly saccharine. Absolutely stole the show for me.
And don't think I didn't catch that mention of "galaxies!"
Loved it!!! Can't wait!
This looks equal parts brilliant and magical. Loved it.
I'm still not sold on Chris Pratt voice just doesn't sound good same with Toad voice but nice to see Peach isn't damsel in distress can't comment on Donkey Kong yet.
This was a very good trailer. I enjoyed it. Pratt sounded better in this one. Day was great as Luigi. Jack Black and Anya Taylor-Joy really kill it.
Rainbow Road in the Mario movie is an amazing inclusion.
Oh dear, Peach's personality seems very inaccurate to the games. They've turned her into Daisy. Loved the Mario Kart scene though.
@CharlieGirl But at what cost? Now Luigi is damseled.
Honestly looks great! Can’t wait to see it myself, let alone my boy.
I love all the references to how frustrating some of the early platform days were. The cheep cheeps, moving platforms, spinning fire obstacles, and the donuts that drop. Some great deep cuts
Loved that classic DK
something about peach (visually) is very...uncanny
Great trailer. Got to see more of the world and characters with some absolutely stunning animation to boot. The references were also lovely (I particularly liked the Mario Maker one in the middle) and Day, Taylor-Joy and Black seem to be doing a great job with their roles (notice that I'm omitting one). Overall, can't wait for April!
Also, I can't wait for the inevitable 10+ articles analysing each torn hair of Luigi's moustache.
This was great! I am LOVING the casting, especially Charlie Day Luigi - he feels born for this role. The rainbow road mariokart plot has me a little concerned but everything else I cant wait to see.
Comes out the day before my 39th Birthday, Already told my wife…this is the way
Love it, so far. Family watched it and laughed and were having fun. Can't wait to see the whole thing.
I get that the voices are different. That happens, and I'm okay with it. It is just weird for a little bit and then I'm guessing most people witll get over it pretty quickly.
Looks like the posters that leaked were real, but all the models look wayyyy better in motion than they do on the posters.
Solid trailer but underlines Chris Pratt’s voice role as non comital. And I second people’s enthusiasm for a more active role for Peach, though I sense they’ll overcompensate and make her an “overly bad ass” to the point of cliche.
We’ll see. So far so decent.
Holy wow that trailer was great. Even better than the last one even!
And they made Peach, my personal least favorite Mario character, actually good??? This movie truly is gonna be something else.
This movie looks sooo good. I don't really watch modern movies, but definitely want to see this one.
Of course, Peach is a badass, kick-ass fighter babe. But, I should get use to this by now... I mean, every woman has to be like this in modern films these days. But, I hope that Mario and Peach get together by the end.
Christ Pratt doesnt sound bad.(I havent watched any of his movies in english)
Is that a Funky Kong and a Diddy Kong (left) I see driving 2 of those karts?
Um….this looks incredible
Still loving it! This is going to be such a fun movie.
It looks rather glorious, I can’t help thinking what future Mario games might look like!
loved the nod to the Super Mario Bros 3 commercial when everyone is shouting Mario Mario! as Mario enters the coliseum to fight Donkey Kong
@Marioracer
No, those are just some generic Kongs from the stadium scene.
@fenlix I think Luigi being behind enemy lines will be the film’s way of giving him his classic scaredy cat to hero arc.
Looks very promising, but the music sucks.
Maybe they’re just doing the typical Hollywood trailer thing, but if the movie is anything like this, it’s gonna take away a lot of my enjoyment.
They should’ve just let Koji Kondo score it.
@MathiasBS Koji Kondo is involved in the movie.
@fenlix I have no problem with this.
Another great trailer! Redesigning DK to look both classic and modern is pretty interesting, as well as there being A LOT more Kongs. Charlie Day’s Luigi is perfect. I don’t know how I feel about Peach acting like a boss but I approve of her not having the high-pitched voice from modern Mario games. It’s sort of like we’re going back to Nintendo 64 Peach. This movie will be fantastic!
Peach mentioning “galaxies” makes me think Rosalina might be in this movie.
Peach definitely still looks off to me. They had to be cliche and make her battle warrior badass. So dumb. Plus I dislike Anya whatever her name is, can't act to save her life.
Other than that it looks great. Pratt's Mario voice doesn't seem bad at all even if it STILL won't show us a full sentence by him. Love Charlie Day and he seems like he'll be a good Luigi as well.
Jack Black's Bowser is going to steal the show though. Damn.
@Dev9417
McDonald's spoiled this already.
@fenlix but he is not scoring. He’s assisting, which means he won’t have a final say in any of it, and non of his music will be featured, probably besides Easter eggs and the generic orchestral version of the main themes.
I would’ve just loved to see a whole movie with the unique, jazzy vibe they’ve evolved over the past many years, combined with his amazing orchestration from Galaxy. It could’ve been great, but some executive probably said no.
I hope Mario is not the punching bag throughout the whole movie. Peach and Toad are most likely the leading characters from what I am observing.
@Belatarr what did u think they were gonna make?😂😂😂some dark brooding serious Mario movie for adult men on the internet?. Lol get real
I am not impressed. I just see lots unfunny scenes that pretend that they are funny.
Great trailer. Loved it
@Crockin Right? It's silly how many people are somehow shocked a Mario movie is..aimed at kids? Whoa no way? The new SpongeBob movie doesn't curse and talk about murder either?! Weird!
Thought it was fantastic! Officially on the hype train.
Funky Kong confirmed
The complaints for Peach being "out of character" are just so odd to me. The most character she's ever been given in the games have been Paper Mario, Mario strikers, and Super Princess Peach - all of which she showed the warrior side to her.
For the last time. Those are generic Kong from the stadium that looks like familiar Kongs from the DKC series, they just took their designs as templates.
Considering today's society, I'm not surprised (and am pleased in this case) that Peach isn't a damsel in distress here. Taylor-Joy voices her well, as does everyone else with their roles, especially Black and his spot-on portrayal of Bowser.
The Mario Kart nod was an unexpected but definitely welcome touch.
Can't wait to enjoy this movie with the wife and kids.
Wonder what's going on with DK and Cranky, maybe Mario has never met them before he arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom? I liked DK's design, he looks somewhat less serious but he can still be imposing.
I didn't like the Mario Kart sequence much; I mean, of course there's going to be video game references but I don't want it to be just a bunch of game in-jokes, the movie has to be watchable on its own right. I also hope Bowser gets some proper characterisation instead of trying to conquer the world just because. Mario and Peach's voices sound alright; my biggest concern is that I don't find the humour very funny.
But the weirdest thing about the trailer is that Mario may be doing some actual plumbing...
By the way, a little heads-up about the article: Rogen said that he played a Playchoice-10, not that he owned one. Playchoice-10 were arcade machines, it would be odd if he owned one...
Welllllll now I'm hyped. Looks like Peach will finally get to kick some ass.
@Belatarr I know u don’t, but that’s ok
Crap. Chris Tw*t sounds like he normally does except with a mouth full of toilet water. Peach has been given that dreadfully generic ‘update’ of getting her out of a dress and being a princess to take on an ‘active’ role instead of showing her princess duties to be a hell of a lot more important and worthwhile than pissing about in a go-kart seeing as there’s clearly no actual ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom other than her. I love Charlie Day but his Luigi is just going to be him being kidnapped and making that same shriek he does in It’s Always Sunny. They’ve then gone down the route of having a movie entirely designed around infantilised adults writing about a million articles on various sites about ‘Easter eggs you may have missed’ in the movie. It’s just Wreck It Ralph but with an even worse art style.
I’m watching this for sure
Bowser pulling poor Luigi's moustache hair out was my favorite part. I was already more hopeful from last time but I definitely feel better about Chris Pratt's Mario, even if he still isn't saying much yet. It's worth pointing out the world map with a new Donkey Kong Island and Yoshi's Island. I wonder what the desert kingdom is? Sarasaland? Nah, probably just like Super Mario Bros. 3's Desert Land... I think.
It all looks super great! I especially liked Luigi. They nailed his character here!
Looking really good so far. I like that Peach has a more active role, the world looks beautiful and the acting seems pretty good from what I’ve heard so far. Yes, even from Chris Pratt.
Wow, that trailer put a big smile on my face. I cannot wait for the movie!
Charlie as luigi is not bad. Still fits the role but I expect better. Chris is better now but still doesn't fit the role until I hear more lines. Taylor-Joy as Peach is really ***** good. She easy fits the role, right up there beside Jack and Keegan.
I thought it was funny that they took the effort of having Seth Rogen introduce the trailer, and then his character had no lines in it.
Also, I guess I'm not surprised, by it, but it still saddens me how some people here are complaining about Peach having an active hero role in this. Did you really expect this movie to conform to stupid gender stereotypes which were already old and tired 37 years ago, when the first Super Mario game came out, let alone in 2022?
I love how Donkey Kong looks kind of like the mascot costume from the American Super Smash Bros. commercial.
@Polvasti
Well, the strong, independent, badass, no-nonsense, serious, woman with no flaws and needs no man technically became the new stereotype of the 2010s.
Looks like it will be a fun family movie. Love to see Funky Kong in there. Charlie Day as expected has the perfect voice for Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy also a great fit for Peach. I wonder if DK will actually have any lines or if he will just make noises.
Mario seems a bit too goofy in this trailer, I doubt he will be like that throughout the whole movie, being the protagonist and all.
This has even more footage than the first trailer did, and I was grinning ear to ear while watching it. It sucks that the movie doesn't come out until April, but hopefully it will be worth the wait.
For the last time, that is not Funky Kong, just another generic Kong that happens to look like him.
Ok, that trailer got me hyped.
So the platforming is Mushroom Kingdom bootcamp it looks like...
Mario is gonna have all the bruises.
Peach is pretty kickarse. Awesome!
This looks so good 😊
Holy crap that was amazing, Mario and DK throwing down Smash Bros. style, but man oh man, the ending to that trailer, I absolutely loved it.
@RareFan Perhaps, but with centuries of gendered oppression and discrimination, which is still very much a part of most societies on our planet, a stereotype of strong women who need no men is still very much preferable to the stereotype of damsels in distress. This is a kids' movie, and I'm very happy that young girls these days can grow up with these kind of pop culture heroes instead of female characters whose main role is to support and/or be rescued by the male hero.
@RareFan Bruh, they don't even get together in the games.
@RareFan you have to either not know what he looks like or just be really cynical to not recognize funky here
@Crockin
If you look closer, you can seem more than just one Kong with a red bandana in the final scene. I think it is just a generic Kong from the stadium scene. They are using the designs of the Kongs from the Rare era as template for crowed scenes.
I actually have to say, this was pretty good! I am definitely looking forward to this movie now! Even though the human characters don't look exactly like their game versions, I can still get behind this! And Chris Pratt as Mario does seem kind of decent; it's more like Captain Lou Albano or Bob Hoskins than Charles Martinet, as I said a while ago.
And I am SO glad that it looks like Princess Peach won't be the damsel-in-distress she usually is in the games. I've been saying it for years, but Nintendo REALLY needs to give the whole "Princess Peach getting captured by Bowser" thing a rest (I say the same with The Legend of Zelda, too).
I really enjoyed this trailer, outside the Illumination style slapstick humor. Hopefully that is minimized by the Mario allusions. It does look like a genuine amount of care was taken in crafting this together though, so I’m pretty excited to see the film.
@Polvasti
Both are stereotypes. The helpless damsel in distress is insulting, while the strong woman is boring. I kinda wish we can have a middle ground. But it seems it is just one extreme or the other.
@Gamergirl94 So agree - everything perfect apart from Mario’s voice.
@nessisonett Agreed. Movies like this need good writing. Family-friendly or not. For example, Star-Trek II: The Wrath of Khan/Spiderman (2002) is for kids, but the characters, dialogue and philosophy/message is put first. If only we see the brothers having a meaningful arc.
I know I shouldn't be but I'm surprised about the complaints about Peach.
@RareFan Most heroes in fantasy stories like this are strong, it comes with the genre. I've never seen anyone complain that Aragorn or Thor are boring characters because they're strong, so I don't understand why strong women in fantasy stories would automatically be boring either. It all depends on what else is done with the character besides showing her strength.
Anybody else remember the super mario bros super show?
Wow.. this just reconfirmed Pratt sucks. That was some sorry performance
The lines that Peach said are the same lines said in 100 other films. You hear them said so many times you can predict the end of their sentence. Boring.
I love Jack Black's Bowser and was hoping for some Rogan DK. The movie looks fun so far. I'm excited to see more.
I thought Princess Peach’s voice was horrible, it was the worst part of the trailer. As for her role, I always envisioned Peach as more of a stately person, a ruler, than a warrior. I mean, no one seriously expects a US President, or the late British Queen for that matter, to also be a warrior. They have different and important roles and most work together to complete a task, but I guess they are going a different direction with the story. We will see how it turns out I guess. As for what I enjoyed, the animation was amazing, and seeing the Mushroom Kingdom come to life was really cool. I really enjoyed the Toad portions and thought they were great as well.
@RareFan well the next swing of the pendulum should be instead of giving women masculine roles / qualities they get to be show the feminine qualities, like empathy and compassion. We currently just give women masculine qualities. Slowly getting there bit not quite. When women are truely able to be themselves we’ll see more peace, and compassion instead of the power and amd aggression
@Polvasti
That had mostly to do with modern media. Before the politics came into the entertainment business, no one really had an issue with strong women in stories.
I AM SO HAPPY THEY SHOWED THE YOSHIS HERE!!!!! Makes me infinitely more excited for the movie even if they only get a small part. I didn't see green Yoshi by the way which MAY indicate that that color is maybe reserved for leadership role or something, maybe like the Penguin King. Maybe the Yoshis hide a star like the penguins did too.
In any case, the whole trailer was awesome and I can't wait to see it!
@RareFan seeing the commentariat opine that strong women archetypes are "boring" makes me wonder why male characters don't get the same critique.
Love how people are judging from a trailer how this is going to pan out. If I can enjoy the absolute rot that was the last Mario movie I'm sure this will be amazing.
Blaa blaa blaa Mario's 2 words don't sound right.
Blaa blaa blaa peach's lines and attitude aren't accurate.
Blaa blaa blaaaaaaaaaaaa!....
Watch the F'ing movie then pass judgment.
I'm taking my son to this as it's his birthday month and we will enjoy every minute even if it's a load of old man sacks. Why? Because it's Mario on the big screen and a father son day out. Lower your expectations that way it's going to be great. It's a Mario movie not the next Oscar bait rubbish. Enjoy it for what it is. It's got Karts for the love of god!!!
Peach looks like a person cosplaying as Peach.
Hey, NintandoLife, for the second time : it's "Rogen", not "Rogan".
The herd of stampeding Yoshis was so adorable.
And the falling donut block 😆 And Peach's battle outfit!
The art in this movie is amazing; I'm definitely looking forward to it.
This second trailer honestly raised the hype level too much; now I don't want to wait all the way until April.
@CharlieGirl
My guess is, that we had a balance of male heroes in media back then. We had the no-nonsense serious once, such as most of the DC and Marvel super heroes/protagonists, but we also had idiots (Homer Simpson), naive children (Spongebob), egotistical ones (Darkwing Duck), wisecracks (Sonic), jerks (Kuzco), brutes (DK), slackers (Mordecai and Rigby), former evil ones (Stitch).
When it comes to females, we only really have two types here in the west: Strong women with no flaws and, at leats in children's media, happy-go-lucky girls.
Peach in this film sounds, talks and acts like every other modern strong woman.
That trailer was epic.
Looks great! The animation is gorgeous, the voices are good (yes, even Pratt) and the references to the Mario universe (Smash Bros., Mario Maker, Mario Kart, etc.) are going to be fun for fans to find and enjoy.
I like that Peach doesn’t have a baby voice and is a strong character. It’s time to retire the princess gets captured trope for good. Or at least in future Mario and Zelda games.
No, this isn’t The Godfather, but it’s a fun family movie like Sonic was a few years ago.
That is the last trailer I’m watching. Movie looks fun.
Well, it's damn PACKED. Karting, casual mentions of "galaxies" and even a bit of Kaizo flavour?😆 Peach is already aiming to become the movie's biggest selling point for me, but the rest promises to be a wild ride, too.
Since it's past 3 AM (no, I wasn't waiting for the trailer, just spending a couple farewell hours with Dragalia Lost - I'm still behind most of the story but it looks like the bulk of the cutscenes has at least poured out to YouTube for now), I'll cut my impressions short and leave you ladies and gentlemen to continue the umpteenth civil and dignified discussion of the main character's voice and whatnot.😏
Honestly hyped to see the movie after watching the trailer.
@CharlieGirl The problem is that strong women in media are all funnelled into the one identical archetype. You know what’s strong? Being a confident ruler of a kingdom, flaunting ‘girly’ stereotypes and being proud of it. What isn’t strong is male writers’ idea that women need to get out of dresses and do ‘male’ things like race cars to be seen as strong and independent. It’s literally the exact same thing they did in Wreck It Ralph. It’s regressive, how come male characters can be a million different roles but female characters are still being put into one of about 3 roles?
Peach seems fine. It's not she hasn't joined in on the action in various games before. And, as with many people, I'm a bit tired of plots that rely on her getting kidnapped. Interesting how she's marching around in her Mario Kart biker outfit at one point.
The movie seems like it'll be fun overall. As with the last trailer, though, Chris Pratt's turn as Mario still sounds very weak. Won't ruin the movie for me on its own, but... eh, it definitely seems like a poor casting choice.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Fair play! Haven't tried those titles. Are they considered canon?
@RareFan
It can also depend on the franchise, i remember Estelle from the legend of heroes seems well liked compared to the more divisive Rean in the cold steel games(he is popular but you also will find a lot of people who really dislike him and consider him a "mary sue")
@nessisonett why do they need to stay in dresses
Looks awesome. Some people are going to whine about everything and nothing will make them happy. Some people somehow know how Peach’s story plays out. And to whine about Pratt’s voice? I’m sorry your mom forgot the tater tots tonight but if taking it out on a movie you haven’t seen makes you feel better, have at it.
Meh, humor is awful. It feels so forced.
@Nikhogan He barely said anything. Did you notice that they didn't have him speak much in this trailer? You can't tell from a few words here and there. Luigi, Peach, and Bowser had way more lines than Mario did.
Ugh... looks like a typical low brow Illumination movie but with Mario characters. And Chris Pratt doesn't sound like Mario, he just sounds like Chris Pratt.
I loved it! I think Charlie day fits Luigi perfectly, ai just, kinda wish I could say the same for Mario, oh well, the movie looks amazing! And having rainbow road in the trailer was not only awesome but it still followed the trend of every rainbow road being different!
@nessisonett
I feel like a lot of the time it can come down to stories with fewer female characters so you often don't see many different roles in the story, where's with more characters you get to see more variety, though in the Mario franchises case it feels like the majority of the female cast is relegated to spinoffs (look at Daisy for example) so in the mainline games we only really have peach...sometimes toadette.
Looks pretty damn amazing. Is it me though, or did Pratt sound different in this new trailer? Maybe my ears are just getting old 😅
Okay now I'm even more excited than before. I want more trailers! (as long as they don't spoil 70% of the movie)
@Crockin It’s not that they need to, but more that it’s an overused trope in these sorts of movies that female characters need to be separated from their femininity. I don’t even really like Brave but it did a great job at showing that Merida and the Queen were both strong-willed in their own ways while embodying different aspects of femininity.
I am BEYOND excited for this movie! It looks like it has a little of everything! I’ll be going to the theater for this one and I’m probably going to cry too because that’s what happens when you’re in your late 30’s, kids.
@Mgalens Don’t forget Bowsette!
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Good point. I like to think there's an incidental canon and timeline. Seems like the fandom could support documenting it!
Someone dubbed the first trailer with actual Mario voice and honestly it was so much better. Chris Pratt ain’t it. Visuals are pretty. The voices are just weird. I think the voices will just take all my focus and stress me out if I watch it. Cool game references tho
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Perhaps this is only the beginning of the Mario Cinematic Universe and lore as convoluted as the MCU's.
@RareFan ...refreshing take.
@nessisonett
On a similar subject just who is Bowser Jr's mother?
where's the koopa queen?
One of the saddest, funniest things about "nerd culture" (ie- literally the most popular media in the world, Star Wars, MCU, etc) is that so many people will look at this film and these characters and just tear it apart like its produced by A24. Its Illumination. I'm 40. I'm happy this is coming out so I can share the movie with my children. I'll just play my games and be happy that the kids have a thing. If it's good, bonus. But honestly? If it's Minions level junk food I don't care.
@nessisonett the dress wearing woman running around ‘doing femininity’ is a much bigger trope by a huge margin. Not to mention majority of male tropes are even more stale, overdone and boring.
Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong were spotted in the stadium crowed scene, as well as a Kong that looks like Swanky.
@Crockin You’re entirely missing the point, the fact is that female roles in animation have been positioned as either a girly girl who waits for a Prince Charming or as a tomboy who rejects any and all princess roles. There’s no nuance, which is exactly what gender is, a spectrum with endless individual people. Take The Hunchback of Notre Dame as an example, both Quasimodo and Phoebus show completely different sides of masculinity, showing both to be perfectly valid and they serve as role models in different senses. We should be encouraging kids to see people of all walks of life as role models, and one-dimensional female characters in these movies aren’t helping anyone. It’s not the 90s anymore, the emphasis needs to be on characters that are individuals, rather than broad strokes caricatures of what men think strong women are.
Love everything I’ve seen about this movie. Chris Pratt just plain sucks however.
Yep, I’m down of all the voice actors. This is going to be good.
Though Peach’s personally is off, seems more like what I’d expect from Daisy.
Pixar did the exact same character change with Bo Peep in Toy Story 4. She was strong before, you didn't have to change her into a trope!
@nessisonett welp, my daughter loves it so I don’t know what to tell ya. She also Miyazaki movies which have incredible female leads. She also likes Elsa and Princess Leia. I think you are tunnel visioning this. The whole criticism of the tropey badass female character is just insular online culture war junk. Literally never hear any of these same people criticize male characters for being overpowered.
Like the biggest critiques of this trailer are; peach’s proportions, peach’s face, peach’s voice, peach’s personality, the way she dresses. It’s so predictable how guys are gonna react to this stuff, you can set your watch to it
@nessisonett you’re getting all that from a trailer?
Too early to tell.
And peach…races in karts in the games. Don’t understand your complaint
Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, no thanks. There HAD to be a better actor out there for DK, not Mr. obnoxious "shouting makes it funny" Dude Weed that hasn't been relevant in like 10 years.
Willing to see this mostly on liking what I saw of Jack Black as Bowser, who...Seth Rogen stole most of his act from, except Jack is funny and can sing.
@nessisonett Wasn't Princess Peach invented as a handful of pixels that represented nothing more than femininity and vulnerability? I think it'd be a huge mistake to try and capture some of whatever "character" she has from the games. Especially if the Mario they're showing us here also possesses a depth the games have never given him. How awesome would it be if this movie makes it so that Nintendo never sidelines or pigeonholes Peach again?
Really loving all the game elements appearing in this movie especially the Tanooki Suit and the Fire Flower.
No to the new "comical" Donkey Kong. Yes to everything else, especially the karting sequence and Mario seemingly training on a Super Mario Bros course, and I already love Peach. The glimpse of all the Yoshis running brought a warm feeling, fuzzy feeling too.
I for one am excited. I plan to take the family to see it in 3D, should be a great time!
@LikelySatan Yes, people who are raising children think they are Satan online, and write paragraphs saying they don't care and that other people are nerds. All on a nerd website. Gotta love hypocrisy!
@CharlieGirl It’s really refreshing to see out of Peach, and also makes a lot of sense for this movie given how we live in the age of characters such as Merida, Moana, and Raya. Basically we have been getting princesses who are more independent and capable than ever before in animation.
@SonOfDracula You missed what I was saying here, but I don't care. I hope you enjoy the movie.
So much terrible slapstick in that trailer. The first trailer made it seem like it was an adventure movie with fun characters, while this had slapstick in place of character.
Charlie Day using his regular voice for Luigi feels very natural
Now that was a fantastic trailer. And it seems they really are gonna hit the right time for a property as silly and fantastical as Mario.
Voices? I'm on board with the voices. I think Chris Pratt nails a perfect Mario voice that has shades of Charles Martinet, but different enough that's appropriate for a full length movie. Charlie Day sounds fine as Luigi. Keegan-Michael Key sounds great as Toad. I was anxious to see what they do with Peach and I'm happy to hear she sounds pretty straightforward and not the sort of ultra girlish, high pitched, squeaky voice we've heard from Peach in the past. And she's actively getting in on the action.
An appearance by Tanooki Mario. Peach powering up with a Fire Flower
The real kicker was the Mario Kart scene. And RAINBOW ROAD!!!!
Looks like there also might be a Mario Galaxy/Rosalina tease in the movie or possibly an outright appearance.
Trailer had me smiling from the start to finish. I really hope this movie sticks the landing
This trailer was certainly better than the first. Not sure about the humor, though. Guess that's just the style now.
Also, I can't unhear Charlie (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) in Luigi. lol
@nofriendo At the end, Rosalina will appear alongside Sonic and Pikachu, and invite Mario and friends into the Smash Bros. Initiative.
@RareFan "Peach in this film sounds, talks and acts like every other modern strong woman."
There's really not a problem with that.
@nessisonett ... I think you've lost it is what. Pratt's voice doesn't sound good, yeah, but frankly, you're being too freaking harsh on everyone else.
@ketrac ...says Waluigi.
I only played Mario Maker 2, so what is this Mario Maker reference people are talking about?
I love the SMRPG (best ever Mario game) reference with the frying pan being brandished as a weapon.
All I want is a Geno cameo and I can die happy
Chris Pratt's voice is just so BAD. Not a fan of Peach's either, but it's not terrible I guess. But making her "badass fighting princess" is the most Americanized cliché thing they could have done to her character. Lame.
Not to rain on anyone else's excitement, but in my opinion, all I got from this trailer is that the movie is going to be generic. Full of lame tired jokes, clichés, and loud, horrible, overly orchestral versions of classic Mario songs. All the characters being voiced by celebrities was already a red flag, but this confirms to me it's nothing more than a souless cash grab.
Doesn't surprise me considering Illumination is behind it. I thought Nintendo's involvement would save it from being too "Hollywood", but I guess not.
@Stubborn_Monkey actually, the article is right and you got you wrong, Rogen owns one.
Seth Rogen: "I have a PlayChoice-10 in my house, which is like a stand-up Nintendo arcade machine that has 10 classic games like Contra, ExciteBike, Rush’n Attack, Double Dribble and the...[…]”
There.
@CharlieGirl Actually there is. In attempt to correct an age old criticism, studios are overcorrecting the problem.
People have complained, and rightly so, about the stereotype of women in media. Studios however, have responded by swinging the pendulum so hard in the opposite direction; They've created a new, and equally bad stereotype.
Something is wrong when you have to constantly announce your female leads traits vs anything else that should define them as a character.
@DashKappei Ah. My mistake, then. I was thinking of Rogen's statement during the trailer presentation, where he says "Ever since I was a kid, playing a Playchoice-10, I remember..."; but thanks for pointing it out.
I really, really, really loved all of the powerups, and little touches like the donut blocks, rainbow road, and the lime. I'm not sure if I'm keen yet on Luigi's voice, but I'm sure I'll get used to it quickly. Overall, I'm pretty excited for it. The people at Illimination are certainly doing their best to crank the Nintendo feel to 11.
As if the first trailer didn't hype me up enough.
Plus, the movie comes out a month exactly after my birthday.
@Mountain_Man No he doesn't. He's doing SOMETHING.
Now I feel even more pumped up for the movie. Loved seeing DK and Cranky, and I did not expect to see the latter as a king (or some kind of royalty) at all.😂 It was nice seeing Peach's motorbike outfit, didn't expect that either.
The voices though? Only Bowser sounded somewhat "right", the rest aren't bad (Luigi's is alright but you can clearly hear its just Charlie Day doing his voice if that makes sense) but once again it will take time to get used to.
Also, lots of + points for the Mario Kart moment here.👍
@Fangleman32 I'm not going to agree with that. I'd rather have women characters that are "too" strong, than women characters who aren't strong at all.
@FangleMan32 Why would a strong, independent woman be an "equally bad stereotype" as a weak woman who always needs to be saved by the male hero? Unless you think women's role in life and fiction is to support men, the former is much, much better than the latter. Especially in kids' movies, where kids learn what it means to be a hero.
Also, some people here seem to think that depicting female heroes in fiction as more feminine is somehow better and truer than making them more masculine, but that is a very problematic idea. Not all women are feminine and not all men are masculine; gendered concepts of femininity and masculinity are very much stereotypes in themselves. In real life people are way more complex than that. A lot of men are not tough guy fighters and a lot of women are not caring nurturers.
But it really is worth noting that this is a fantasy movie whose main audience is kids. No one is expecting it to include complex, realistic characters who escape all tropes and stereotypes. It's a piece of heroic fiction, so it's more preferable that the main female hero among a cast of dudes is presented as a strong, positive role model than as someone adhering to ages-old stereotypical ideas of feminity and how women should be. If the movie had more female main characters, there would a better opportunity to display a wider variety of archetypes of women, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one. (Though I'm happy if I'm be proven wrong.)
I don't see what the issue with Chris Pratt is!! He sounds really good in my opinion, and clearly they needed someone who has acted in feature films as opposed to voice ovwe work. Also I might be showing my age here, but people should be greatful that Bob Hoskins isn't playing Mario. Go watch that Mario film!
This looks like something I would've loved to see as a kid so I'll go watch it for ol' time's sake.
I... rather liked this! To my own surprise, I think I'm hooked now.
@Polvasti "Did you really expect this movie to conform to stupid gender stereotypes which were already old and tired 37 years ago, when the first Super Mario game came out, let alone in 2022?"
She IS a stereotype in the trailer. Every single modern animated movie has a female character like that and it's become just as one dimensional and stereotypical as what they were trying to move away from. Even the voice sounds the same. It would be more subversive in 2022 to make her soft, girly and vulnerable. They could've done that without making her a push-over and still giving her a funny personality and lots of character.
@CharlieGirl
For me sadly this is, because female characters can not really surprise you any more, if every single one of them have to be the same archetype.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Is there a reason you tagged me? Especially using a quote I didn’t say?
Edit: Ah I see you edited your post. Would have been polite to say you made a mistake however.
Jesus this looks amazing beyond all my expectations. I caught myself chuckling and then stopping to watch after 2 thrids as there was no need to tease me any more.
Really looking forward watching this with my kids!
I think ... one more trailer until people stop talking about the voices or faces and it dawns on everyone like collectively being woken up with a bucket of water ...
Oh. This movie is clearly and obviously targeted to pre-teens. It's a kid's movie. I mean ... obviously. Why wouldn't it be? That's why the jokes aren't landing with me ... THEY ARE FOR CHILDREN. I'm not the target audience. This is not for me. I will not enjoy this unless I can go in with the mindset "I am going to try and enjoy this movie that is clearly for children and will not fault it for being simple, silly, and childish."
I can't wait!
Shaping up to be a not just a great video game movie but a great movie on its own.
These are so good! These are some of my favorite design for them yet. I hope it does well and we continue to see more.
Looks great! Will probably see this at the cinema with my daughters. For them, obviously.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Read my comments above (especially #166 and #167) where I addressed the issues you mention.
@CharlieGirl Just generic.
Princess Leia will always be great because she was the OG. Now most feel like caricatures.
@Magitek_Knight For some reason I hadn't considered Bowser singing in this movie until now. Now I want an over the top badass Bowser villain song.
Wow... are these... tears? No, no couldn't be. Opening night is going to be EPIC!!!!
@RareFan Maybe the problem is that you expecting a little much from entertainment that is made for children and manchildren.
My opinions so far:
If you are watching this expecting anything but rote character archetypes, you need to adjust your expectations. Everyone is tearing apart Peach's characterization as "strong woman," but Mario is the "male bumbling idiot" in this...which is not only a strange take on his character but also a trope that was worn out years ago. No one has anything to say about that though. Just that Peach is being rad. Says a lot more about you guys than it does about this movie. Get over it. The characters will be tropey. It's a movie with a plot and characters designed for 10 year olds with a bunch of references and nods for the parents. It's....an Illumination film. It's made to expand the imaginations of children. YOU shouldn't need to constrict YOUR imagination to such a degree that you're tearing apart Princess Peach in the new Mario movie...
@Tobiaku How is Mario characterized in this trailer, do you think? You describe Peach as "strong woman trope," buy only talk about Mario's voice...
@LikelySatan Mario seems like a "Fish out of water" type who needs to learn how things in Mushroom kingdom works. And for whatever reason Bowser is (somewhat) scared of him?
If he is stumbling around the entire movie I won't like that, but if they are going for the idea that he is from Brooklyn / New Donk City, it makes a bit of sense he would stumble early on.
Still looks awesome. Where are all you haters? Tunes have changed.........I find that hilarious!
I loved the WAHOOO at the end
we were all wondering how Chris Pratt was gonna pull it off but its looking REALLY good so far
Just watched this... 4 times in a row. WOW.
Grinning like a fool - i know this is a kids film, but the big kid in me, who has been playing Mario games for over 30 years, was so happy this film is being made. Mario Kart, rainbow road, all the Yoshi's, god it looks amazing.
I was over the moon after the first trailer. This one brought be crashing back down to Earth. Doesn't look like the Mario and Peach characters anymore. They took the Mario world and squashed it down into every other Hollywood set of tropes — idiot male stumbles and bumbles his way to victory while the badass girlboss cleans up the mess and is ultimately the real hero. There's nothing wrong with telling that story, but you can't use Mario and Peach to tell it — that's not who the characters we fell in love with are. By all means, make them equals (a la SMB2 USA), but don't make one an idiot just to make the other look awesome. Besides, we already have the loveable loser in this universe; his name is Luigi and he's my favorite.
Peach's design looks off to me, I feel like her head is just a little too big for her body. Also, Anna's voice just doesn't sound right to me. I don't think it needs to be as high pitched as it has been previously, but it just doesn't work for me. My enthusiasm for this movie is fading with every trailer that is released. Pretty much everyone else thinks it is amazing so I guess I am in the minority on this one.
I think it looks great. Finally a movie based on a video game that is LIKE THE VIDEO GAME.
Another lovely trailer. Really looking forward to the movie!
