Update [Thu 20th Oct, 2022 16:10 BST]: It's official — Bandai Namco has confirmed that Digimon World: Next Order will be releasing on Switch worldwide on 22nd February 2023, so we don't have to wait any longer than our friends over in Japan! The open-world RPG will also be coming to Steam on the same date.
The company also dropped a brand new trailer to celebrate the announcement, which you can watch above. Now you'll be able to take Agumon (or whoever you want) with you on the go!
Here's what Bandai Namco has shared about this new release:
"Leading video game publisher and developer Bandai Namco Europe S.A.S. today announced that DIGIMON WORLD: NEXT ORDER will be released on February 22, 2023 on Nintendo Switch and PC.
Originally released in 2017, the game puts players in the shoes of a DigiDestined, tasked with rebuilding the Digital World that has been put under complete chaos. To help them in this challenge, players will be able to find and recruit among over 200 Digimon that they’ll have to feed, train, and form a bond with.
The town of Floatia will serve as a hub that will be developed by the players as this is where they will be able to recruit Digimon, upgrade buildings, grow crops and develop the city into a sprawling metropolis."

Original article [Tue 18th Oct, 2022 13:38 BST]: Digimon fans won't have to wait long for a brand new Digimon game on Switch. Bandai Namco has announced in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu that it will be bringing Digimon World: Next Order International Edition to the console on 22nd February 2023 in Japan. A Western release date hasn't been announced yet.
Ryokutya2089 shared the news on their blog (via Nintendo Everything), revealing that this new release will come with new features and elements. Digimon World: Next Order was originally released on the PlayStation Vita in 2016, before getting a PS4 port internationally the following year.
B.B. Studio's open-world RPG is part of the Digimon World series, which started back on the original PlayStation, that lets you have two Digimon partners with you at all times. Your Digimon fight for you automatically while you stand back and issue commands to your little digital monsters. The Switch version will come with a brand new 'Beginner' mode, as well as the ability to run and move faster.
Here's a summary of the game from the PS Store, along with a couple of screens from the Japanese version:
YOUR FATED RETURN TO THE DIGIWORLD!
The Digital World is in despair. Machinedramons are running rampant and causing utter chaos…
Explore and traverse this mysterious universe, recruit faithful Digimon companions and save the DigiWorld from destruction!
• Recruit and raise 2 DIGIMON at the same time!
• NEW RAISING FEATURES to train your Digimon and form strong bonds with them
• EVOLVED BATTLE SYSTEM - Exciting real-time battles where cooperation with your Digimon is the key
• ExE EVOLUTION - Fuse 2 Digimon together to create the most powerful monsters!
A new Digi'mystery is waiting for you!
While the game doesn't have a Western release date yet, Bandai Namco has a pretty good track record of bringing Digimon games to our shores.
Digimon Survive was the latest Digimon game to land on Switch — after years of delays — and we were pretty big fans of this visual novel/strategy RPG hybrid:

We'll let you know as soon as we find out when Digimon World: Next Order makes its way onto Switch consoles in our part of the world. In the meantime, let us know if you've played this entry before in the comments!

After the situation with Survive, I feel like we'll have to put an asterisk on any Digimon game's release date going forward.
Amazing news! Played a lot back on my ps4. Can’t wait to do everything again on the go
Never been a fan of digimon.
But this game got my attention.
Yay! can't wait. Still need to play cyber sleuth first though.
It still surprises me that series like Digimon, Yugioh, and Bakugan still exist and pump out games/merch despite peaking back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Pokemon has more or less killed the competition on monster-collecting games (I guess it helps to be backed by Nintendo).
I’m a massive Digimon fan & let me tell you this ‘game’ is terrible.
Anyone interested should look up some video reviews first.
I bought it Day 1 & returned it after a couple of weeks as I was fed up.
Training is done in a gym. Where you level them up & evolve them. You can’t just grind because your Digimon have lifespans. They will die eventually & get reborn in rookie with some permanent stat boosts/perks.
Your Digimon will be reborn dozens of times which means levelling them up again all the way from the beginning.
Just imagine getting to the Elite 4 & suddenly your boss Charizard turns into Charmander again.
Been waiting on this one for Switch for a while. I tried to like Survive but it was not for me. Bring it on.
@Axecon I've not played the others so I can't talk about these, but Digimon games are surprisingly good in general. I expected a pokemon like with Cybersleught and I've never been happier about being wrong.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Judging by this I take it you never played Digimon World on the PSOne or were a kid in the 90's with a Tamagotchi?
The rebirth mechanic is deliberate and brings an extra challenge that everyone may not appreciate.
I really need to get to Cybersleuth and then Survive
@Axecon I found out digimon is worth around 6 Billion USD as an IP. While no where near as much as Pokemon, globally it does well.
Excited for this. Love it on the PS4, hopefully that will be the basis for the port as it had QOL improvements.
The switch is looking like causing its own cost of living crisis for me in 2023. Zelda and Suikoden among others
I’ll definitely buy that game, I miss how I used to watch digimon every morning back in 1999 when I was 13, I miss tie and matt and sora and joe
@Nanami_Ataraxi Reminder this game plays much differently than the Digimon Story games.
Wasn’t really a fan of this game, but more ports of these Vita era games are good
I tried this on ps4/5 and did not like it at all sadly.
Might retry it with a guide eventually but probably not.
@Kiz3000 I’m aware of that. It’s just it’s not very well implemented here. There’s almost no exploration in the game. You’ll spend most of the time in the hub, then head to zones where you trigger story events.
I played the game for like 40 hours & I can say at least 30 of those hours were spent in the training gym.
This game plays & feels like a mobile game. It’s nothing like the CS story which are incredible. Anyone interested should watch a video review imo, because nostalgia isn’t going to be enough.
Finally, waited to long for this too, but still waiting for Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode to be localized, but 3DS game buying almost fully closed then I now waiting for localized port instead for that game.
Plus I waiting for localized ports of Digimon Story Lost Evolution and Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Red & Blue as well.
@Fight_Teza_Fight using the gym isn’t advised past Rookie. It’s best to find Digimon you can farm stats from.
That's cool! Due to how grindy the game is I've been hoping that a portable version was coming sooner or later. Hope we get it in the west!
It'd be nice if the original on PS1 came over bc I find that to be the better game overall!
I've been hoping for this.
Have it on PS4 but it's a game I would much rather have on Switch. Never finished it because the grind is a bit much for me to dedicated my home gaming time to.
Would hope it releases worldwide on the 22nd of Feb rather than just Japan, if not because its my birthday then because it's a re-release, surely the vast majority of work for a worldwide release (translation) is already done.
@Fight_Teza_Fight The fact they die and have lifespans is part if the entire appeal of Digimon Wold.
Imagine comparing this to Pokemon, an entirely different incomparable game that isn't built around such a mechanic.
What an awesome surprise!
Also give me physical or give me dethhhhhhhh.
Great game and a drastic improvement over the original PS1 game (the first one). Still rather difficult and complicated at first but once your Tamer Level is high enough it becomes much easier and a lot more enjoyable. Death also becomes far less of an issue too and I'm not going to say anymore because I want people here to play the game for themselves.
@Kiz3000 I would say the death mechanic in the original game is what drove many Players away (myself included) due to its poor implementation.
I've loving that more people will get to play these great Digimon games. Fingers crossed Xbox will get this & Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition too - no one should be left out.
Considering the PS Vita version never made it out of Japan, this is good news to those Vita Digimon World fans who are still hoping to playing this game on the go.
Unironically one of my favorite games. I've replayed it a dozen times on PS4. The only thing for me is that there's no dash button so traversal can be a slog.
@Fizza Survive's development cycle got restarted with a different developer about a year and a half into production. This is a game that was already released on PS4 and localized into English. It's not going to be delayed for 2 years.
I'm definitely interested, but I should probably play through Cyber Sleuth first since I already own it.
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Sorry but is this your first world game? This is how the world games go. Your partner grows, ages and dies. You can extend the life with evolving and items but all good things must come to an end. In fact the star upgrades you get more than make up for your rebirth.
Gym training isn't the way to go until you have the items and helper digimon, you gain more stats and moves in combat.
Also, don't compare a monster raising rpg to pokemon... totally different game types
"Brand new"? A 2016 PSVita game isn't exactly brand new
@Fight_Teza_Fight it's based off the mechanics from the original Digimon World on PS1 and the follow-up to the 3DS/PSVita games. It's a V-Pet sim and a really damn good one at that. So if you do not like V-Pets like the original Digimon devices Bandai released in the 90's, Tamagotchi, etc with mechanics like cleaning up literal *****...this is not the game for you lol. But if you can make it over the first awkward hurdle, this game has a ton in it.
@RubyCarbuncle
Just curious, why do you think that death is poorly implemented in Digimon World 1? Once you get your tamer level up a bit new born Digimon start out with decent stats. You can also use items like the training manual, super carrot, and hawk radish to get Stats up quickly
I hope tha they include credits of the voice actors this time!
@Juanblue85
Would it be more fair to compare this to monster rancher? If so, I think I know which one it is, if not then I'm open to something new :3
Oh I do hope it comes to the West. I have the PS4 Version and I really enjoy it, but I always wanted it to be portable!
This is awesome! Yes! I played this game on the PS4. Now it’s coming to Nintendo Switch? Davis is back people! Or should I stay as a Digimon Tamer! My first Digimon in the new TCG card game was Guilmon! I went to the Vancouver Battle Royale to compete in the Tournament for the Digimon tournament and won 3 times. Ok I am going to organize my cards! This is unreal!
Thank you Nintendo!
It's becoming Arceus in game play.....and I have yet to finish the first Digimon game...
Fantastic that it is also coming to PC. I played it on my ps4 and going to enjoy replaying it again.
I should play Digimon World for the PS 1. It was really great at the time and I was not even good at playing it. Digimon season 1-3 aired at the time so this game was something special to me.
@Axecon Except, Pokemon doesn't kill the competition. Digimon isn't even really a pokemon clone. It started as a tomogatchi for boys, and expanded into a show and games due to how popular it was in Japan. Yu-Gi-Oh isn't even a monster tamer. It's a straight up card game that has it's roots in a really good manga and an okayish anime that was adapted from said Manga.
Not to mention how many other Monster Collecting games are different gameplay and style wise to Pokemon, and whilst pokemon still sells heavily, many other monster collectors don't really directly compete like many think.
@SwitchForce Digimon World Next Order came out way before Legends Arceus was released.
Didn't expect Digimon Next: World Order to be coming to the Switch. With Cyber Sleuth and Survive, the Switch will have a Digimon Trilogy playable for it.
@Fight_Teza_Fight So, it has the same gameplay as the original Digimon World it's a sequel/reboot of? Honestly, if you spent that long in the gym, you were playing it wrong, stat grinding from battles is the way to go, also, you can easily complete the story mode in your first generation of Digimon, but the point of the rebirth mechanic is to steadily increase the maximum potential of each generation by raising your own level. It's a tried and tested mechanic that has been used in some regard in all of the most beloved Digimon games.
