Gotta be honest: this trailer does not do the game any favors. Choppy, clunky animation and unappealing character designs (to me, anyway) turned me off of a game that I should be interested in playing.
@JJtheTexan I agree. This looks terrible.
Even the short gameplay clip at the end felt like the guy who recorded this didn't know how to play the game.
I’m seeing Catgirl Space Harrier, and hearing Bayonetta…
Dead on arrival.
@Coffeemonster I'm seeing Catgirl Space Harrier, and hearing (and seeing from :30 - :45) Cowboy Bebop.
Seriously, go watch the opening for Cowboy Bebop on YT and tell me you don't see the influence. The song in this trailer sounds like a mix between Tank! and Chicken Bone, the intro for CB and the song that plays during the in-universe bounty-hunter show.
The gameplay is... not on point, but if the rest of the soundtrack is like the song in the trailer, then the music is at least!
Take note, Space Harrier fans, that this doesn't look very good.
Not gonna lie; this looks fantastic. Super digging on the style and music.
To be honest not a big lover of this anime style visual. Everything looks so wooden. And regarding Space Harrier, nowhere near sorry.
If you're going to remake Space Harrier, at least make it better.
At least the trailer music is good.
might pick up if the price is right
Oof. Looks abysmal.
Do you fly or jump? Looks like you jump. The music and graphics are ok. Gameplay didn't look that exciting though.
love space harrier, but no interest in the japanese obsession with these weird manga young girl characters. also looks like it's playing at about 5 frames per second!
Looks very bad to be honest..
@JJtheTexan Yes, the main character looks like they animate really badly
The music is good but I prefer 3D model for the main character and enemies like panzer dragoon series.
@burninmylight Yeah they didn’t really do much to make it feel like a hommage. Just like all the other things in that trailer, it just copies a bunch of really cool stylised influences without adding much excitement of its own.
The gameplay looks like fun but presentation leaves a lot to be desired. The initial announcement seems to be all over character design and who is doing what, which might be big in Japan and with most die hard fans, but also feel like they decided to show little of gameplay for a reason and it's not a good one
this looks like an unpolished gem. maybe if this succeeds they'll make another and really step up the polish.
Feel a bit Sin and Punishment than Space Harrier in some aspect.
@MrFox Sega AGES space harrier is on switch and it's mint!!
SPACE HARRIER returns for 2022.....
@MrFox Space Harrier I & II the better versions will be available on the Sega Genesis Mini 2 if that's something you like to get.
why does the music sound as if im playing mario kart
@MrFox ha, my bad - sometimes hard to tell in comments!
very excited for SH2 on MD mini 2 with better scaling tho!!
@Serpenterror so excited for the SH2 version on MD mini 2!
Looks like a mobile cel-shaded low budget Sin & Punishment that definitely needs more time in the oven for polish… music was good though!
… Wun can only hope.
The game is getting released next year guys, so it'll likely look further polished then.
Anyways, from what's been revealed so far, the gameplay looks fun and the music sounds good.
I just can't get past the DeviantArt-looking character designs, or the clunky run animation that doesn't seem to match the character's actual movements at all.
It's really upsetting, since this looks like it would be a fun concept. But even if the gameplay ends up being good, the visual style they chose to push into every element of the game would keep me at arm's length.
The title of the article had me intrigued but the trailer was a let down. It actually kind of encourages me to want to fire up Space Harrier on whatever console I have it on currently (3D version on 3DS?)
Music and anime art are nice, but space harrier gameplay is a big NO for me.
Great visuals and music ! Retro powa.
@Exerion76 Have you played Air Twister on Apple Arcade? It's from Yu Suzuki and is a lot like Space Harrier. It's not very good though, at least I didn't think so.
I would expect that sort of animation quality from an iPhone game, not a Switch release. yikes!
That trailer was so 90's.
... as does the game's visuals. Maybe that's what they were going for, though, in which case they totally nailed it.
It also seemed rather ridiculous to me that they would be running through what looks like a busy highway. Reminds me of the Roberta chase scene from the Black Lagoon anime.
Was wondering if anyone would mention the much more interesting Air Twister. Kudos to @SMH88
Yu Suzuki's Air Twister is very, VERY weird and totally worth checking out. Soundtrack is heavy Queen homage, and the visuals seem like some sort of 1960s album art concept of tripping on drugs. It has some touchscreen control concessions, but you can play with a controller, too.
I enjoyed its extreme weirdness (many people will not!), and after going back to play Space Harrier afterwards, Air Twister actually had more interesting gameplay with some added technique — but both are very slight in that category!
Anyone who has Apple Arcade and a memory of Space Harrier or is a fan of Yu Suzuki should give it a go for the "trip" even if you only play through all the stages once.
(There is a game loop where you unlock cosmetics and some ability boosts over time, but you can get most of the game visuals without hooking into that — and, thankfully, Apple Arcade is free of micro-transaction junk)
@aaronsullivan Well said! I wanted to play Air Twister so bad after seeing it on NintendoLife, but I don't have an Apple phone. I watch trailers and let's plays just to see the awesome game play and hear the awesome music. I really hope this comes to consoles soon one day. I'm waiting with bated breath.
Now delayed until next year, looking at the latest from Pixel’s YouTube channel.
