Wave 2 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass might have just dropped. But wait, stop your engines. Why not go and check out Coconut Mall before diving into the new courses?
Why would you want to do that, you ask? Well, Nintendo might have brought in Wave 2 today, but it's also confirmed that it's updated one of the courses that came in Wave 1.
In both the Wii version and the Mario Kart Tour version of this fan-favourite track, there are cars towards the end of the course that can drive into your character and knock you out. A bit unsporting, but it became pretty iconic. You could shove opponents into them, and it made for a little twisty, turny driving towards the end of a lap. This wasn't present when Coconut Mall debuted in Deluxe in March, and lots of fans weren't happy about it:
But Nintendo has taken note, and alongside these new courses, the Big N has gone back and updated the course to make those Shy Guys drive those cars! You go, Shy Guys. We believe you can hit all of our foes.
They don't move in exactly the same pattern that they have done in previous versions, but we're pleased that Nintendo has gone back and updated this track with this much-requested feature.
We'll add that one back into the rotation then!

Having them do random donuts seems very unfair....it's perfect
Thank the ****ing stars! This has totally changed my life!
...For the better! Obvs.
Those Shy Guys don't give a *****. I love it.
I love it, but on the other hand stuff like this emboldens toxic fans to harass developers to do what they want.
Still, very cool!
Ah this is cool, thanks nintendo!
dang thats flashy, a very welcome new spin (lol) on the hazard!
I'm very happy that Nintendo went back and fixed this! Does this change affect previously recorded Time Trials, though?
Edit: Just saw the patch notes. The cars don't move in Time Trials.
Everyone: Dear Nintendo, please make the cars move
Nintendo: You want them to move? Ok, TAKE THIS!!
Love the donuts
We the Miiple demand the return of Miis!
They just forgot to grab fuel for the last 4 months is all.
Being serious though: this is fantastic. Not only have they added the chaos those moving cars brought about back into Coconut Mall, they've also enhanced to be even more unpredictable! It went from a track that made me pine for the original to one that stands well on it's own two legs. Fair play Nintendo, fair play!
@OFFICIALMichi tbh, Nintendo almost never caves to fan demands, so it was probably a genuine oversight on their part.
Idk how I feel about this.
It's cute and makes the final section a bit zig-zaggy, which I guess ultimately was the point.
But I'd argue the original pattern was something you could parse at a glance. It was always kinda a gamble, like "OK I just rounded the corner and I see the cars moving that way, do I have time to sneak past or do I take the slow but safe way around?"
Now it looks as if the car sometimes goes from a standstill to suddenly doing donuts. Still an effective hazard but not one you can predict as well.
I mean I do appreciate that this was certainly more time to animate than just cars going linearly back and forth, and that they listened to the fans... sort of. It's just not as good as the original pattern IMO.
It's like getting a very expensive Christmas gift you know immediately you'll never use.
That's even scarier than the Wii version, damn Nintendo isn't playing around lol
Ah, ever the Nintendo way of “fixing” something by somehow making it worse. You’ve got to love it
What did I say, this is a perfect example of being careful what you wish for, those donuts will be the death of me, i tell you.
@TrueFantasia Fair.
Donuts?! Shy Guys are the new blue shell.
@retroman64 Yeah, on the Wii & 3DS, it was just a straight line across. Now? Good flipping luck
But did they make Toad Circuit less ugly?
Glad the cars are moving, never played Mario Kart Wii much (tried at a friend’s house, I was very bad at tilt controls.) but they did feel kinda boring in wave 1.
Masked thugs doing donuts in their cars during the daytime 😑
What is the world coming to?
I think it's great they took the time to listen to the fans. And be creative while they were at it.
@DavidMac They (boringly) just drove back & forth
Good on Nintendo for listening and reacting to feedback 👍
The Shy Guys are ready to commit some Shy Crimes.
(I'm sorry.)
Who drives like this in a parking lot in broad daylight?
Man, Nintendo really went "Moving cars?? OH, WE'LL GIVE YOU MOVING CARS!".
I never blamed the Shy Guys for staying still, with the price of gas and all..
The Shy Guys stay still in Time Trials mode, which is a good compromise.
Mario kart is still wack, like it always has been!😎
@BLD Well, it's Mario Kart, thats kinda the point
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Oh so you like donuts, eh?
Well have all the donuts in the world!
Hallelujah!
(Filler here)
yeahhh, finally
Jeez, those Shy Guys need to slow down on the whisky.
Nice, now I might buy the extra tracks
Good on 'em. The last straightway is VERY boring if those cars don't move, this is a huge improvement.
This was an excellent compromise. The cars move again, but they're easier to dodge, or it least dodging them is based much more on skill than dumb luck, than they were before.
@Fizza @BLD No, they became more predictable, which is a good thing, as it was basically blind luck as to whether or not you crash into them in the Wii version. Now you have to try and see if you can just make it to the left side of the road to avoid them, although that's sometimes easier said than done. There is no slow and safe way around in the Wii version, as you could possibly be hit no matter where you try to drive through.
@DavidMac You do know that you can play MK Wii with traditional controllers too, don't you? That's how I always play.
