Today is World Cat Day (you knew that right?) and while we may not be awash with national holidays and gift giving, the Pokémon company have managed to deliver us a present nonetheless.
The gift comes in the form of a series of Pokémon GO-themed 3D billboards, which will be showing outside Shinjuku Station in Tokyo from today until September 5th.
As a tie-in with World Cat Day (seriously, where is our national holiday?) the advertisements are all centred around the feline-inspired Pokémon that have inhabited many of the franchise's regions. Looking at the embedded Twitter video of the billboard, those lucky enough to cat-ch a glimpse will be treated to appearances from Meowth, Espurr, Litten and many more.
The advertisement will remain in rotation outside Shinjuku Station until September 5th so there is plenty of time to see the board if you are lucky enough to live locally. Let's hope that there are more Pokémon displays in store for us in the coming months.
3D billboards have become particularly prevalent in recent months, with many pop culture franchises using the new technology to advertise their brands. Check out the below examples for Netflix's Resident Evil series and Square-Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
What do you think of these billboards? Are there any cat Pokémon that you think are missing? Let us know in the comments below!

Question : What do you think of these billboards?
Me : I will get attracted by Dance Dance Revolution A3 Arcade advertising.
Pokemon GO? Nah....
I would love to see one of these in person. I hope they make their way over to the states. Is it just an optical illusion, or do they use technology similar to the 3DS where it can produce stereoscopic 3D without needing glasses?
I think the 3DS was such a novel innovation. I love 3D cinema, and my TV is capable of producing 3D effects, but I've never had any movies or games that were made specifically for it. I think it's a real shame that 3D technology has largely kinda died off. I hope stuff like this will make its way over to the West and breathe some life back into the space. It's probably not gonna happen, but I would love for the successor to the Switch to have built-in 3D capabilities.
@Not_Soos couldn’t agree with you more!
I love these things, they look soo trippy!
@Not_Soos there are way too many issues with 3d on tv’s: passive or active glasses, low brightness, no glasses etc. Lowers framerate by half the original and often times just not was implemented well.
This was even often the case in cinemas where they added the 3d effect later on instead of filming with 2 camera’s. James Cameron did that with Avatar and was a superb example of good 3d implemitatio.
I love it though.
I'm confused as to how 3D they can be said to be.
Aren't they just videos running on a 2D screen that only appear correctly if seen from the corner?
If so, this is mostly just a new use of technology we have had for decades.
@Not_Soos
I thought about this too, but I'm sure it would be insane to make technology similar to the 3DS work for something like a billboard, that should be visible from so many different angles and distances.
Man, that Red XIII ad is actually pretty solid, I love how they have him peeking out in the sun.
advertising is the devil.
and, these billboards are even more distracting to drivers than the last wave of animated/flashy/media billboards. the world is not a fn disney theme park shopping mall people!
@Not_Soos well, the second one is the Resident Evil one in Times Square in NYC which last I checked was the States….
Happy World Cat Day!
On-topic those billboards looks lovely.
Probably says a lot about how much I love FF7 that I could tell it's that from the first few frames. Looking forward to playing Intergrade on the Switch Pro one day.
@Anti-Matter You post on MGH?
@TechaNinja
What is MGH?
@Not_Soos, it's an optical illusion and isn't stereoscopic 3D.
Most noticeable in the Pokemon one, you can see that the "box" the Pokemon are in/come out of isn't the entirety of the screen, and that the part of the skyline they're popping out over is actually part of the screen as well. The screens also bend over the side of the building, and the illusion looks the best if you're looking straight at the corner.
Not saying these don't look cool as heck though.
20ish years of my life has been lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere while the other 10ish has been spent in a small city.
You that live in places like New York or LA would of mistaken that small city for a small town even. And 99% of the time I'm happy with that. The town I'm currently in it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to get anywhere in town. Not that this town has much.
However the downside is we don't get to see cool stuff like those 3D billboards or any of the other latest tech! Heck, by the time we hear of any tech and mistake it for something new it's probably been out for 5+ years , therefore old news.
Whoever leases these out must be absolutely raking in the cash.
I absolutely love these billboards though. I remember the first one I ever saw was Dragon Quest one they did a while back and I've been enamoured with the concept ever since. Hopefully we can get one of these for SV before that comes out (I highly doubt it, but hey you can hope).
I would love to see some of these start popping up in America
These are always soooo cool!!. cant understand how they are not in every city. literally futuristic. Amazing.
