In an interview with Nikkei, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa says that, while semiconductor supply issues are looking to improve for the remainder of this fiscal year, next year looks more "uncertain". This follows the publication of Nintendo's financial report for Q1 2022-2023.
In last week's financials, Nintendo reported a 22.9% drop in profits for April - June 2022, but the company also reassured people that it would not be increasing the price of the Switch and that the semiconductor shortages would improve over the summer and autumn period.
- Further reading - Nintendo Rules Out Any Price Increase On The Switch In Japan... For Now
Furukawa says that Nintendo will "work out the best strategy" as it goes along and that it's doing its best to "procure high-quality products at an appropriate price", but that things are only clear for the remainder of the current fiscal year:
"With cooperation from various business partners, we're on track for improvement from the latter half of this summer. But in terms of our sales forecast of 21 million units for the fiscal year through March 2023, we only have a clear production outlook for this year. Beyond that, things are uncertain."
This cooperation means that Nintendo Switch supply should improve for the rest of the year, as Nintendo already laid out in its latest financial report, but it's unknown what the demand and supply will be like next year. Furukawa also states "I can't say specifically what is in short supply", but that Nintendo will still be selling all three Switch models — Standard, Lite, and OLED.
- Further reading - Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 111 Million
While Furukawa once again reassures that Nintendo isn't considering a price increase "at this point", the President was asked about rising material and shipping costs.
"For the time being, our OLED model will continue to be less profitable than our other models. Costs have undoubtedly increased for shipping not only by air, but also by sea. We're thinking about what we can do.
The weak yen may be seen as a benefit for Nintendo, since such a large share of our sales comes from abroad, but our overseas promotional and staff costs also go up. We're making more inventory purchases in foreign currencies to counter that."
While the yen is indeed weakening, costs across the world are also rising, causing Nintendo to consider more options, including — as Furukawa states above — buying more inventory in other currencies.
And even though a large percentage of sales come from abroad, Furukawa brings up the issue of shipping costs, and the company needs to think of a way to get around this.
The OLED costs more to produce, and, while it's more expensive than the standard model (and frequently the best-selling Switch console week-on-week in Japan), it's only marginally more so.
Still, despite any potential issues with supplies, semiconductors, and prices, Furukawa believes that "hit software" in the latter part of the year will help the console massively, specifically citing Splatoon 3 (9th September) and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (18th November).
Other major platform exclusives coming out for the remainder of 2022 are Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and Bayonetta 3, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 has a chance of squeaking in before the end of the financial year (March 2023) as it's tenuously dated for Spring 2023.
What are your thoughts on Shuntaro Furukawa's words? Do you think the semiconductor shortage will improve more next year? Let us know in the comments.

.......this can mean only one thing guys.
...
OMG THEY'RE FINALLY GOING TO ANNOUNCE THE SWITCH PRO!!!!
@Joeynator3000 I had the same idea. 'Uncertain' because they have no idea whether the switch 2 (with the name Swappofold-DS) will have the same amount of sales or not.
Oh I so hope they're not doing anything too wacky to distance themselves again from the current Switch audience...
I love that Nintendo is finding ways internally to deal with rising costs and so far is not passing it to the consumer. They are well within rights to do a price increase but they are holding steady.
What a lot of corporate PR.
Not singling Nintendo out, they all at it this week and even some developers 😂
"Procure high-quality products"?
Maybe fix the joycon drift issue?
@Ryu_Niiyama simply because, like any console, the profit comes from the software, not the hardware. Margins on the hardware are incredibly small.
Selling 6 games at £50 each is way more profitable than selling an OLED Switch at £300 ( even more so if those games are sold digitally).
And all the while, people are clamouring for a permanent price drop.
The iron's still hot, and while a power boost would be great, there's no point in wasting resources on a late(?)-generation upgrade when bugger-all developers (including Nintendo themselves, frustratingly enough) would take significant advantage of it. Case in point, the performance dips on the Fire Emblem and Pokémon games on 3DS despite the existence of the New 3DS range.
Are three SKUs not enough to please everyone for the time being?
@Joeynator3000 No.
There will never be a Switch Pro. The Switch is now 5 years into it's lifespan. The next hardware Nintendo will release is the eventual Switch successor. Releasing a Switch pro right now, would just devide the massive userbase in 2, and that is never a smart move.
There. Point proven. The Switch Pro will be the worst idea because Nintendo would be hurting themselves. Like I said, the Steam Deck doesn't prove anything, especially looking at how expensive it is to manufacture it.
We should just patiently await the release of their new console. People really need to shut up about the Switch Pro by now. It won't come. The thing closest to it, is the OLED.
@Friendly I'm confident in saying they won't. This is a different Nintendo from those days when Iwata ran the company where they would take risks on such unique hardware. They're going to stick with the hybrid model as long as there's a market for it.
make switch 2 that plays switch 1 and 3ds games and you have a slam dunk.
@Ryu_Niiyama rising costs on a 5 year old console? This is their cash cow. No way are they not making a profit on a 5 year old hardware.
If you've got spare consoles, start holding on to them, shortages are gonna inflate prices on the used market...
*Maybe.
I don't see a Switch successor until 2024 at the earliest, probably 2025. I'm basing this entirely on Splatoon 3's updates - they won't be pushing content updates for a game on a 'dead' system
uncertain because the invasion date for Taiwan.
@infernogott 5 year old hardware? The hardware was almost 5 years old when it released
While they don't break this down specifically on their investor briefings of supplementary documents they're definitely making a tidy profit on each unit and have been doing so for a long time.
@Orokosaki This isn't Sony or Microsoft who do usually sell the console at an overall loss (including R&D, advertising etc. not just BOM) but then make it back on the software. Nintendo typically makes a profit on hardware too.
sales will keep declining next year even further that's what will happen
This sounds like Nintendo's going to announce new hardware later this year (releases in Spring 2023) and making Switch stock for January - March 2023 (and beyond) depends on how much the new hardware announcement affects holiday 2022 Switch sales.
I’m confused with Nintendo recently, we know they have been stockpiling raw materials, doubling from previous years, it’s very easy to buy a switch anywhere, sales are slowing which have nothing to do with semiconductor component part shortages, most people that wanted a switch now have one, there are enough switch consoles out there, probably more than enough, so what on earth is Nintendo sitting on with its stock piles, it’s certainly not for a switch which is slowing down in sales. I still think Switch 2, or whatever it will be named, will be out next year, I’d say possibly April with a duel release of Breath of the Wild 2, throw in a brand new 3D Mario with the movie release. Plenty of momentum for a next system. And no it won’t be a switch pro.
@ModdedInkling the Steam deck is going to sell about as well as Steam's other forays into the tv/handheld market. They get inital massive buzz - then complete radio silence. No one outside of hardcore pc users cares. For all the Money they make, they are the worst marketers in gaming.
@BartoxTharglod that could be a strong possibility, especially in regards to the joycon drift and just general repairs. I had a massive issue getting a pad for my Wii U which broke, was never able to purchase a new pad.
But there has been a huge amount of stockpiling here with Nintendo going by the graphs from previous years
Don't read too much into it, it's an uncertain climate right now: inflation and shortages are present so a publicly tr
@ModdedInkling I get that people don't really want to purchase a new expensive model but trying to wrap a pro/2 as some big mistake is wrong for me, it's a 2015 SoC and developers, even for first party games, are now struggling to really innovate and even maintain a stable gameplay experience, really felt it witch Xenoblade 3.
Truth is mentions of the NVN2 DLSS API for switch were already found so it's either being in advanced development or even finished, you don't work on an API without having a strong idea of what your hardware is IMO.
the only thing holding back Nintendo is the current switch still selling very well and their games like BOTW2/MP4 being delayed..because yes they will never release a plus/2 model without proper AAA games to justify it.
they won't forever stay on a 14nm node, foundries will upgrade and they'd have even more difficulties convincing Nvidia to continue X1 production rather than switching on the more popular and widely-available 7nm.
Logistic issues whether you transport a switch or a switch pro it's still planes and ships transporting your parcels.
A pro would be more expensive and coexist several years with the current model most certainly so really don't see the issue
I hope we will see a Switch successor (there won't be a Switch Pro, it's too late for that now, I think) release already in spring 2023.
In my opinion it would make sense, because Nintendo could do a cross generational release of the Breath of the Wild successor on both Switch and its successor, and with that entice a lot of people to take the "plunge" and buy the "Switch 2" and get a version of the game with better framerate, screen resolution etc.
Of course Nintendo would need to have more than just "Breath of the Wild 2", but isn't it it time for a new 3D Mario game, a new Mario Kart game etc.?
And maybe Nintendo could entice/"money hat" Capcom (and possibly other publishers) into porting Resident Evil 7, 2 remake, 3 remake and Village (and maybe later even RE4 remake) to the new hardware (these games I believe appeals more to Nintendo fans than say RE 5 and 6).
(btw in my country, Denmark, both the OG, the Lite and OLED Switches are readily available at numerous online retailers - there seems to be no shortage of them at all)
If there ever is a new model of the Switch with significantly upgraded hardware and features, it will likely just be called the “New Nintendo Switch.” I’m partial to “Super Nintendo Switch.” I don’t think Nintendo is ready to move away from the iconic Switch branding just yet.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
Late 2024 or 2025 will be the earliest you will see the next Switch console, and just because you can buy the console does not mean it's still not in demand, even more so when you consider Nintendo's busiest time traditionally is the Christmas holiday period, the current Switch will get close to the DS and PS2 in terms of sales.
@Grumblevolcano
That'd coincide with the launch of BotW 2, more or less. I expect BotW 2 will be a simultaneous release on both the original Switch and the "Switch 2" (just like the original BotW).
Well, that means I can enjoy my PS4 games longer while waiting for next Switch machine. ☺
So they are forced to release a lot of games/dlc to make money, nice
Why would they raise prices? There has to be about 100% profit margin on that potato at the price it's at.
The Switch should be down to 149.99$ or something at this point.
Not surprised the SWOLED is less profitable. The console itself feels much more 'premium' than the original model thanks to both a superior screen and higher-quality build materials.
@AlanaHagues
Still, despite any potential issues with supplies, semiconductors, and prices, Furukawa believes that "hit hardware" in the latter part of the year will help the console massively, specifically citing Splatoon 3 (9th September) and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (18th November).
Shouldn't it be "hit software?"
@Sonos You're partially right. Since August 3rd China actually stopped sending sand to Taiwan. Taiwan is the world's number 1 manufacturer of semiconductor chips. Sand is essential in making glass, concrete and other materials, some of which may directly impact the production of these chips. I'll leave a link (it's in Russian, so use google translate).
https://ria.ru/20220804/tayvan-1807118327.html
I think this idea that the Switch Pro is “dead” and that the Switch 2 will instead arrive in 2024 or 2025 is actually much less realistic. (For the record, let’s define a Switch Pro as hardware that primarily plays backwards compatible games, with maybe a dozen exceptions if any, and a Switch 2 as hardware that has a steady stream of games that only work on that system). A Switch 2, while maybe backwards compatible, would really be the thing that divides a user base, not a more powerful Switch. It’s precisely the fact that Switch is selling so well that I think a Switch Pro in the next year or two is way more likely and a Switch 2 won’t happen until 2027 at the earliest.
Am I crazy or did they not basically say this in the first few months of the Switch release? That they saw this as being an iterative console with at least a ten year lifecycle? People’s obsession with the Switch Pro didn’t just come from nowhere. I think it was actually intended to come earlier and COVID/chip shortages delayed it. And I think that it may very well continue to get delayed, but I still have no qualms about the idea that it’s coming.
How can there be a shortage for semiconductors AND a boom for electronic devices at the same time?
@alanahagues
Small typo here I think. Should this be “hit software”?
@johnvboy I don’t think it will reach DS sales, though I hope it does. The DS came out a time before most modern smart phones became popular. I can’t see those kind of sales again. But even if it doesn’t, the switch has been a massive success
@infernogott the age has nothing to do with it. My truck is 13 years old. I still pay more in gas than ever. We have a supply chain shortage, a semi conductor shortage, and costs of manufacturing have gone up due to the fluctuations of the global economy. There is nothing static or stable about manufacturing this product.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
It will get close, depending on how long Nintendo keep it going, there is still demand for the console, and as yet still no price cut etc.
@Orokosaki not for Nintendo. They always try to sell their consoles for profit (if possible). Part of why they try not to price drop for as long as possible and why they still use the withered tech approach. This has been their business model forever. Also part of the reason why their hardware failures never drained their cash reserves dry. Even on wiiu while they sold it at a loss it was a super small margin that was made up with a software purchase or two.
@BoilerBroJoe,
Who outside of the core is obsessed with a Switch Pro, or has ever been for that fact, the Pro is what it always has been, an unrealistic want from the core fans.
Pretty much all the video's on YouTube are for clicks and subscriptions, watched by very few people in the overall scheme of things, or indeed a very very small percentage of the Switch's user base, the video's only keep coming because these core minority fans are very determined to get what they always wanted, a powerful Switch console, so no amount of evidence debunking all of this lunacy will ever be enough.... so the rumors/videos keep on getting posted.
@Maxz @Ralizah Nice catch! Fixed.
@johnvboy I’m hoping at least 130 million sales easy.
I do worry though how Nintendo will transition for a new console, will it have some kind of flare or a typical Nintendo gimmick that will sell it, will it just be a more powerful system?
I mean the main thing is having games ready at the door for a release. That’s why I think we may get a successor sooner than we think, It takes roughly five years or more for a new Zelda game, 3D Mario was typically five years wait also, with the exception of the port of Mario 3D World and Bowser’s Fury, the Mario team have been quiet for nearly five years, we have had a few 3D Mario games now on the Switch. I can’t see Nintendo brining out anymore titles from these teams on the current switch, apart from Zelda Botw2 which we know is coming.
If Nintendo bring out a switch 2 in either 2024 or 2025, there would be an issue with game releases as they would have just recently come out on the normal switch a year or two before.
I’m going by game releases and how they usually plan. If Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 isn’t a duel release, if we get a big 3D Mario on the current switch within the year, the next system would have no big hitters at launch, unless there’s a big new Mario Kart, or Animal Crossing or Smash Bros, but the main line Zelda and Mario would be missing for the first few years
@johnvboy But, but, but the middle of a recession during the highest inflation since Pong was a system seller in the middle of a eurasian food shortage when retailers are discounting electronics to get them out of their warehouses is precisely when you want to release new, premium even more expensive discretionary entertainment products! There's SO many enthusiasts with no life that don't care WHAT the price is, they'll pay it just to get the best and the latest that money can buy, and you can't stop progress!!!!!111!111~~~~
@NEStalgia,
You have convinced me, the Switch Pro is real, I mean all those YouTube videos and rumors...must be the old "No smoke without fire" adage all this time.
Can't believe how stupid I have been.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
My bet would be a new Mario Kart game or another Zelda delay, whatever I am still sticking with fall 2024 or the first quarter of 2025... but lets just wait and see, as trying to predict what Nintendo will do is never an exact science... just like all those leaks.
@NEStalgia to be honest there has been many recessions within the last 30 years and consoles still sold, even when there was a video game crash in the 80’s Nintendo found a way of turning that back to form and gaming became massive again.
I’ve noticed some people on these comment sections seem very angst on here regarding people wanting a newer system. There’s nothing wrong in that, I don’t see why it needs a degree of sarcasm or disrespect to other people just because they want something new.
@johnvboy it won’t be another Zelda game, botw2 would have just come out on the switch, it would take another five to six years to Develop another mainline Zelda title, especially at the rate it’s taken this game to come out and that’s using the same engine and assets from the first game, in a sense they could have started from scratch again but that’s for another topic, unless of course it’s a top-down Zelda game. That would be fantastic
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed That's called NintenDoomed fandom acting like Nintendo fan or gamers.
Nothing in the reading says squat about Switch with Graphics isn't coming but naysayers gleam what they want to hear is pretty sad here. If they weren't making a replacement Switch he should come out and say it but the reading even says nothing about that. So NintenDoomed fandom are making up facts that don't exists. All we have to look back is the Nvidia leak clearly shows there is new hardware development and it's not the OLED that is coming. That is Fact and Nintendo never denied or commented on it's leaks. That by itself should tell you something.
@SwitchForce I don’t understand it, I like change, I like seeing the future here and now. Gaming is meant to bring people together not to pull people apart because they have a desire for newer and better things.
I know we are in the midst of a crises all over the world but these things going on in the world have been happening for years anyway, wars, financial recessions, instability, and yet consoles still sell, smart phones still sell, computers, cars, houses, Nintendo are no different, they can’t ride of the sales of the switch forever, switch sales are starting to slow.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
Was thinking more of the current Zelda game getting another delay.. the last one had quite a few.
I have no issues with people wanting a newer more powerful Switch, but it's the way these rumors are being taken so seriously that surprises me, after so much information not supporting any of those said rumors.
As for sales slowing, the console is over five years old, how many consoles sold 3.8 million units in the first quarter when they were at this point in their lifecycle, the Switch can still sell 20 million consoles this year, hardly a poor effort, or that it needs to be replaced.
I do like the old you can buy them so they must not be selling line, as if these people are stock checkers for all these places, perhaps just perhaps, stock is selling... then being re stocked, you know in the traditional manner, although I do expect Nintendo to shift more units in their strong holiday period.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed People have been declaring that there's a new Switch on the way "this year" since 2017. It's just full-on memery at this point, but it's that much more ridiculous given the economic and supply issues currently that anyone would even seriously believe that this is when Nintendo, not an ultra-premium luxury products brand but as mass market as mass market gets kind of brand, that has an impossible time managing supply chain even during ideal conditions, would actually attempt to bring out an all new piece of luxury priced hardware.
There's a difference between "I'd like to have new hardware" and "I'm entirely oblivious to the collapsing world around me, I've got spare cash, and I'm looking for something to throw it at."
The energy cost alone would make any company baton the hatches and ride it out until distribution and production becomes more affordable if they intend to make a profit and not price a product as an extreme luxury before rolling out a massive new product launch unless they have no other choice for profitability. Sure we've had other recessions over 30 years, but fuel was still $0.94 a gallon, and while wages are higher now, housing, energy, healthcare, etc. etc. etc weren't consuming nearly all of the majority of customer's income back then. The cost of living has skyrocketed as a portion of people's income over those 30 years, and back then it was common for women to stay home and not work at all.....so factor the 2 income family in with most of the income siphoned to non-discretionary and it shows just how backward we've been moving economically per capita and per-household.
Also consider the last major recession that compares to this one was in the 70's in waves through 82. About when the gaming market crashed in fact. Nintendo salvaged it with a very particularly limited product, as a pseudo-monopoly, as the recession ended. With a budget priced product.
The next major recession was in '08, and while video games somehow survived that, it is also the reason both PS and XB limited the PS4/X1 so severely with weak hardware because they were afraid consumers would not spend on them and they were not willing to take the usual subsidy loss even 5 years after the recession, and the market has changed considerably since then.
Bottom line is Nintendo has a very well selling product that can only shakily produced, and a time when consumers are not feeling spendy (electronics are piling up in retailer warehouses), are pulling back to spending mostly on food, and discount brand food at that, while electronics parts are expensive and unpredictable, manufacturing is at an energy and labor driven high cost, and distribution is at an energy and labor driven high cost......what rational company would disrupt their current sales for the exceptionally expensive and messy transition involved in that.....let alone the ultra-conservative Nintendo?
Given the price of OLED, the price for parts, and the price of distribution, we'd be looking at a $400-500 Switch 2. At that price we can assume it'll be a nice WiiU accessory and there'd be no point even considering putting Pokemon on it.
No stress peeps! Quoting from article 'Nintendo Reports Drop In Sales For Q1- Should We Be Worried?' of 3 August 2022:
"Operating profit declined by 15.1% to 101.6 billion yen, however net profits were up by 28.3%, totalling 118.9 billion yen. Nintendo states that this is in part due to foreign exchange gains of 51.7 billion yen on the yen's depreciation at the end of the first quarter when compared to the same period last year."
For those unfamiliar with what "net profit" means. That's your simoleons AFTER expenses: paying for materials, paying for utilities, paying your staff, paying the tax man, etc etc.
Soooo, going up 28.3% is AMAZING:
¥92.67B --> ¥118.9B
[...exchange rate on August 3, 2022 - ¥133.4130 = 1USD...]
US$704.03M --> US$903.31M
That doesn't sound like all that much compared to the likes of google, apple, amazon & tesla. However, it's the PERCENTAGE gain that is YHUUUUGE.
If we look at Apple's increase in net income ("net income" is basically the same as "net profit") between Q3 2021 and Q3 2022, it went up: 11.84%. Really good, but not 28.3% good.
And yes yes yes, forex boost, blah blah blah. But still!!
Yeah because they are going to be announcing the switch U next year. They need to start preparing stock for it now, because they will be flying off the shelves.
@NEStalgia While it's entirely possible they do something like delay BotW 2 again to lineup with new hardware later on than 2023, something is up. We've got:
If Nintendo continues supporting the Switch even with the new hardware there's no problems and we already know they're supporting the Switch until at least fall/holiday 2024 given their free updates and DLC plans (e.g. Splatoon 3 being supported for 2 years)
@NEStalgia
"Bottom line is Nintendo has a very well selling product that can only shakily produced, and a time when consumers are not feeling spendy (electronics are piling up in retailer warehouses), are pulling back to spending mostly on food, and discount brand food at that, while electronics parts are expensive and unpredictable, manufacturing is at an energy and labor driven high cost, and distribution is at an energy and labor driven high cost......what rational company would disrupt their current sales for the exceptionally expensive and messy transition involved in that.....let alone the ultra-conservative Nintendo?"
The BOM on a Switch Pro would be absolutely prohibitive right now. Especially given the current loss on the OLED.. Switch 2 you're probably looking at the current OLED screen, same joycon (maybe minor tweaks) and existing plastics/tooling (think maintaining current production lines — huge factor) but a new chipset, which will be HIGH cost for something that could provide a good amount of additional punch in such a small form factor. I mean, it should go without saying, nothing near the performance of the Xbox S Series S-X Box One720 720S X S (honestly, who is on the naming team there — i would just love to be a rational person in the room during the initial meetings when they were pitching "Xbox One" as a name.. [not to mention big brother camera on at ALL TIMES and DRMed games]. It's like the scene in the Simpsons episode where Herb (Homer's long-lost brother who owns a car company) is hearing pitches for a new car from his marketing team: "We present.. the Persephone" I lawl EVERY TIME XD. Anywho, nothing near the performance of the Xbox Series X or ps5 of course, given those two consoles have football fields more real estate in their core console form factor for their chipsets and fans and cupholders...
Also, one little potential "clue" dare I say, from the Splatoon 3 Direct.. They said it would be the "conclusion" of the trilogy/series (can't remember the exact word). Seems to me, this implies the successor system to the current gen-1 switch guts (STD/Lite/OLED) will be the same form factor, or at least, compatible with existing joy con in a comfortable way...
From how deep and awesome S3 looks for launch (not to mention maps/weapons/gear planned for 2-years PLUS the paid single-player DLC), a 4th game (ie something potentially running on a new form factor console, which is my main point) would be years and years and YEARS away. S1 came out in 2015, S2 in 2017 and now, 5 years later, S3 in 2022. So, that's a LOT of dev time, especially between 2 and 3. So yeah, I think they will ride this form factor (i think it's the perfection of gaming — sorry to the 7 or 8 people on earth in the Playstation sub-sub-sub-sub-demographic who connect their controller to their phone and stream a game on the go. lawl) for their next console at the very least...
@NEStalgia You can talk all you want , but some of us do want some new (or at least "handheld premiere" - I'm a handheld gaming lover) games, so you can't blame those of us (probably a minority, I admit) for wanting some new fancy hardware.
Besides what really big games are coming out for the Switch?
Breath of the Wild successor sure, Splatoon 2 was very successful (more than 13 million sold) but will people feel 3 is more of the same? Pokemon sure, but isn't it just remakes and mostly for the fans (of which there of course are a lot)? Bayonetta is a pretty niché series that never sold that well.
On an end note; could Metroid Prime 4 be a cross generational title too? Do you really think Nintendo will release that for the Switch alone in the consoles twilight years?
You have to consider Metroid is a fairly niché series compared to some of Nintendo's other series (although I admit Dread did really, really well for a 2.5D game).
@NEStalgia Indeed. Bought my Switch in 2017. I didn't take the plunge on the OLED.. The screen looks amazing and the minor tweaks are cool too. But it's just too much money for something with the same hardware. If i played hours and hours and hours on the go, then yeah. but i'm probably 60%docked/40%onthego. Given it's such a large chunk of change, I'd rather save it for the Switch 2, which will, for me.. be a day-0.000000001 buy lololol!!!11!!!one!!!!11!!two
@shgamer Honestly with -=NEW=- Nintendo being who they are I'd expect them to release MP4 on Switch only, and then sell a remaster again on the next console. Nintendo started it, Sony's followed it. They'll milk it.
They have a rock and a hard place right now though. Economically they simply can't release a new console in the next year or two, it would be a disaster, but they also have to hold back content for said new console when it arrives. MS and Sony have FAR more manufacturing purchasing power than them and can eat giant losses easier to shore up market share and they can't even get the job done over 2 years, and their market isn't as budget conscious.
@JetForceGemInEye I'm one of those 7-8 people! And it's awesome! lol. Except I end up playing on Switch most of the time since the screen is bigger YsIX was the final straw for me. That game runs so so bad on Switch, so I decided to build the streaming setup so that games that are on both platforms I can buy the XB/PS version and run it handheld that way. Still waiting for a Rune Factory 5 port because that is so, so bad on Switch.
Only thing with handheld is that most "console" games don't play well to me on handheld as pick up and play short bust games, so I tend to play more specific games that work best handheld which, naturally tends to be more on Switch.
I think during E3 next year they will announce their new console, with it either releasing holiday 2023 or spring 2024, with the latest being holiday 2024. Most Nintendo consoles last around 5-6 years, and next year would be the sixth year.
@Gex According to Wikipedia:
NES lasted 7 years and 4 months (released US 1985/EU 1986)
SNES lasted 5 years and 7 months
N64 lasted 5 years and 4½ months
GameCube lasted 5 years and half a month
Wii lasted 6 years
Wii U lasted 4 and 3½ months
Switch has so far lasted 5 years and little over 5 months
All until their successor was released (excluding the Switch of course)
Switch has so far lasted 5 years and little over 5 months
All until their successor was released (excluding the Switch of course)
And we all have to remember Switch is their bread/butter-time shouldn't matter for release a 4K Switch isn't going to stop Nintendo gamers from buying Switch games unlike if you have to buy a PS5 to enjoy a PS5 game. Sticking a ps4 game into PS5 isn't going to improve game play with some graphics boost but ultimately it was made for a PS4 console. Not releasing a update console isn't going to kill off OLED Switch it will give the consumers more choice which one they want a OLED standard or OLED 4K system. I rather have choice and the 4K unit can still play older Switch games since they won't be changing the slot size because the carts AFAIK come in 8g, 16g, 32gb and probably bigger since they are chips carts not disc based so they can pack more chipset into them. Why people think they can't do this is beyond logic here. We have 1tb microsd and people think they can't make carts bigger then 16g or 32g size or more is beyond delusional thinking that it can't happen.
@shgamer,
A little different this time, the Wii's sales just fell off a cliff all at once, the Switch could run longer as it's still a cool item, and has a pretty broad appeal... another three years is not that much of a stretch.
@NEStalgia You raise good points, but like I said before in another comment, what’s going on now has happened before, we had a recession back in 2009, that started in the USA I believe. Prices are extremely high at the moment, gas, energy, cost of living, food prices, the domino effect from the war of Ukraine, but somehow people still find funds for things that are fun
I’m going by Nintendo's history of failures and game releases for this next switch.
The five to six year game release of Zelda and Mario, Nintendo will want those big guns for a next system, without those games there would be a five year wait, that’s assuming that Breath of the Wild 2 only comes out on the Switch, and that another 3D Mario comes out on the Switch. So come 2024 or 2025 and Nintendo releases a new system, there’s no Mario and there’s no Zelda at the door, and Nintendo tends to follow a trend with Mario, they tend to like to break the mould with a new system with a new Mario that stirs a lot of hype, it’s been the same since Mario 64.
But if there’s no grand titles then Nintendo will suffer for it like the past
3DS suffered as it came out too early, (not enough games)
Wii U bad advertising, not even Nintendo knew what to do with it, no real game to showcase its true power
The Switch which had games at the door for the ready and it was a system that everyone knew. Some would say that there still wasn’t enough games at the start of the switch’s release. I remember people moaning about it on Facebook
I truly believe that games are being held back, for a possibility of a duel release for the next system, not a “Pro” model but the successor, I believe it will be backward compatible, the the Mario movie will tie in with the next 3D Mario game ready for the release of the next system which will have plenty of attention because of the movie.
The only thing that might cause delays is with the chip shortages but we know companies are stockpiling what they can get.
@Ryu_Niiyama 'They are well within rights to do a price increase' are you being serious the hardwares been overpriced for what it is for years 😂
@Would_you_kindly yes I am serious.
@johnvboy I'm pretty sure it won't take 3 years before a successor releases, the hardware is simply getting too old.
But the Switch will probably still be available for at least 3 or 4 years from now, just like you could buy 3DS's from new several years after the Switch released (it's another story with the Wii U, but that was Nintendo's biggest flop ever - except for the Virtual Boy, I think).
@johnvboy You could also argue that the Wii drop in sales took Nintendo by surprise since they didn't release the Wii U until 2 years after the Wii's sales started to drop significantly.
I think Nintendo learned a lesson back then, and I'm pretty sure they have a Switch successor up their sleeve, ready to be announced/released whenever Nintendo feels there's a need to do that.
I think it's just a matter of how powerful a processor they end up putting inside it. And of course the processor won't be on a PS5/XSX level, but more likely on PS4/Steam Deck level, because they will want it to be a hybrid just like the Switch
They'll probably keep the Joy Cons as well plus if they're smart offer full backwards compatibility, to make as many of their customers attached to their particular "eco system".
@shgamer,
Without a doubt, the Wii was on fire sales wise, but in retrospect a dip was always on the cards, when the Wii was launched motion controls were the new thing, and the Wii appealed to people who would have never considered a video game console before, hell even my mum and dad were playing Wii sports back in the day.
But of course a lot lost interest and simply moved on, hence the steep decline in sales and the disaster that was the Wii U, with Nintendo simply assuming all those customers were still there and would simply upgrade to their next system.
This just feels so different with the current situation and the Switch, with more traditionally controlled games like Mario and Zelda for example selling their best ever numbers, and the console still in demand 5 years 6 or so months in.
Yeah Wii was extremely successful the first 3 years, it really was a phenomena with elderly people playing bowling in elderly homes and so on. It really was a very social console (probably the most ever).
I bought a Wii U 5 month after it was released at a low price (never had a Wii) and it was a really "odd" console. It really surprised me how big the controller was, even if I should have known better (I did know the specs before I got it).
I ended up selling it after a year after having only played it about 70 hours. I bought Zombi U, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut (which by the way is a really good "port" that utilized the second screen on the controller well) and Splinter Cell: Blacklist plus the Wii versions of Resident Evil remake and Ø.
But it was an odd console IMO. You had to buy a Wii mote and Nunchuck to really use it as a Wii (I bought a Classic controller too in order to play the Resi games, as you couldn't just use the Wii U's own controller).
It did have quite good 3rd party support at first though (2 Batman games, 2 Assassins Creed games, Call of Duty, a Tekken game, Resident Evil Revelations HD, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and the games I mentioned earlier plus some more probably), but generally the conversions were a bit lacking from what I've heard (and experienced).
And yes, you're right the Switch is a much better console than the Wii (even if it has Joy Con drifting and consoles cracking up due the first version getting too hot). I have a Lite myself and it's really good hardware for the price (I'm very satisfied).
I’m still putting my money on a late 2024 release for the switch 2 ( I don’t care what you say that’s what I’m calling it)
@shgamer,
I have the OLED myself, it's a really cool piece of kit, I did have the launch and upgraded battery models as well.
@OnlyItsMeReid,
Sounds spot on to me, late 2024/ early 2025, which would give my OLED a nice run.
I am more interested in new games at the moment than a new Switch console and it has been over 5 years now and we still have not had a new Donkey Kong game or a 2D Mario Bros game and I hope we get those, Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild 2 and Mario Kart 9 before they make us buy a new console.
It will be cool if nintendo release upgraded switch that can play their 1st party games at 60 fps, just release it with zelda botw 2, I'm sure it will sells really well.
@Bunkerneath
Don't be rough to your electronics, there I just solved Joy Con Drift. I've had a Switch since launch and have had zero issues with them.
@Bunkerneath Send your controllers in. It's a free fix
Finally the Switch Pro is coming.
