As part of Nintendo's financial results for the three months ended June 2022, it highlighted the total sales for a number of games released during the period, including the divisive Nintendo Switch Sports.
Despite some lukewarm reception from both ourselves and the community, Nintendo Switch Sports has nevertheless proved a hith with audiences, appearing consistently on the top ten charts for the UK. Now, Nintendo has announced that sales for the game have reached 4.84 million units, just shy of 5 million.
It's a strong start for the sports title and Nintendo itself has high hopes for the future, stating that it believes sales for the game will continue to grow for the foreseeable future:
"The growth in sell-through during the quarter was supported not only by evergreen titles, but also by a number of newly released titles. Nintendo Switch Sports, released on April 29, had a global cumulative sell-through of over 4 million units in its first 10 weeks. Since its release, sell-through has remained stable without a significant decline in sales pace, suggesting that the title has the potential for long-term growth in sales."
In our own review for Nintendo Switch Sports, we stated that it is a "charming but barebones offering" and that "there is fun to be had, but it's more in the vein of the occasional 30-minute play sessions with friends than anything with major long-term appeal". Similarly, many in the community have resented Nintendo's decision to retain certain modes and content for future releases, a practice it has replicated with games like Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario Strikers: Battle League.

This is a good time. Anything bad I read in a review I haven't found to be true. Plus I enjoy a good few matches every few days while I rotate between games like Metroid Dread and Tetris Effect Connected.
This game and it doing so well feels like a Family Guy gag come true somehow.
i hope that means theyll consider even more support for the title with sports and side modes. if would be disappointing if they stop at golf when they highlight the game is doing well and keeping momentum. cause the game is fun, its still wii sports gameplay but just not enough of it
@Xiovanni the next 3 months of items were leaked with no golf cosmetics in sight. so im guessing possibly late oct-nov?
It could do with a bit more meat on the bone but overall I can't complain.
I only really bought it for Bowling and Tennis and neither if them disapoint providing you're playing against a human opponent.
I've no problem with golf or any other games being added later as long as they are free
Good. The complaints on this game are well exaggerated. Its a fun multiplayer game and my preferred “podcast game,” when playing alone.
I don't mind the model of adding content over time but for those who do, stop making the false claim that it doesn't sell units. It appears to be independent of that and this is pretty good evidence. Even compared to past Mario Sports entries, Aces and Super Rush both sold fairly well.
You may not like it, but you don't need to make up anything about sales to justify your valid dislike of it. Disliking something for the sake of it is fine, you know...
Question : What do you think of Nintendo Switch Sports' initial success?
Me : I don't even think it was a success with very few sports choices. 🤨
Go Vacation is still my favorite.
@IronMan30 To add to this argument, people should also stop assuming that this model is bad by default.
Sure, it was pretty bad in Mario Golf Super Rush (honeslty, probably it's worse implementation. It was released barebones and it stopped being supported really quickly) but I think it's better implemented on games like Splatoon or even Mario Tennis Aces (yes, I think that game did it ok).
Welp, looks like Nintendo's nostalgia grabbing scheme payed off, if it's already sold more than Forgotten Land. I just hope Nintendo uses it's success to make their casual games even better, but with what they're doing for content updates for Switch Sports, they're probably gonna get the wrong idea
Most played game of the year by my daughter, i like playing volle
Ball with her, which is now updat3d.. a ga,e this site didn’t understand at all…
Biggest problem here remains fans were expecting something different and can’t judge on just what they see.. a mid price motion sport compilation with some nostalgic and collectic elements..
Good to see it doing well - hopefully sales numbers will persuade Nintendo to support this game with free updates for a solid couple of years after release.
We preordered Switch Sports, and both my husband and I have been having a blast with it. We have played around 50 hours in total since release, and still play split-screen almost every day. It’s silly, simple fun, and perfect for quick 15-minute bouts while we wait for dinner to finish cooking in the oven.
Love this game, Still play it every morning with my girlfriend before we leave for work.
@Yosher
You mean desperately unfunny?
@KindofaBigDeal Something like that lol.
Well that's disappointing, but nintendo could release any load of garbage they want and as long as it has a title people recognize it'll sell.
@jowe_gw I’ll defend Mario Golf Super Rush.
1. It just feels like a summer game (for the northern hemisphere).
2. If they waited for Fall when the DLC was completed, it would have been competing with a crowded field, including Metroid Dread.
3. They announced before launch that more courses were coming, so consumers could make a purchasing decision based on this info. Communicating up front is a good thing.
The only downside is that it probably gets a lower review score since reviewers can only judge what is available to play.
@Tandy255 My main issue is that it felt that right after the DLC started to roll it ended. How many courses they added? Two? I follow videogame news daily and I didn't even know about the content they added.
Action 52 was the best game on the NES
Something is off or missing from this edition of Wii/Switch Sports. I really think they should have included all the sports from the previous 2 Wii Sports games + more for a new entry so many years later... not just 6 sports and a couple others down the line. Happens too often it seems this gen with some games seemingly being the right idea, but then too light on content.
Also, I kinda miss the Mii craze and the MiiVerse / Mii Plaza of DS & Wii era. Lots of creative creations with limited tools. And they were easier to transfer and share then. Think the Miis are something they should've integrated & expanded more on and kept it going on Switch! Glad they aren't fully forgotten. Bring those communities and the Mii Craze back! That would've added a lot more character & charm to this game.
That being said, I'm all for more sports games on Switch! Still hoping for a new:
... Wun can only hope.
@LXP8 it's does equal good game
I enjoy it. Don’t understand most of the complaints. It’s a great time online or with family.
It’s not surprising.
Sports succeeded at what it did: Being a fun casual pick up and play game. It doesn’t need a filler story mode to pad in play hours or “that game is crap if it doesn’t have this one sport I want”
People here also thought new Mario Strikers would flop and it’s one of the best performing Sport Mario games breaking past a million already. People here love to exaggerate blatantly casual games failing
People need to understand the casual gamer market more and realize not every game will cater toward their needs
@LXP8 this is a good game
@LXP8 yes it is
@Fighting_Game_Loser no their getting the right idea since the game is adding ore stuff to make a great even better
@Ayasplat no it's not
Switch sports was not lukewarm from the Nintendo community you got your facts wrong Nintendo life
@Deepdoop it's not disappointing and strikers battle league and switch sports are not garbage
