Mario Strikers: Battle League has just received a new update. It bumps Next Level Games latest release up to Version 1.1.1.
Compared to the previous update (Version 1.1.0), which added Daisy, Shy Guy, a new stadium and more, this latest patch appears to be quite small. Here's the full rundown, according to Nintendo's official patch notes. It addresses an issue tied to a goal keeper glitch.
Ver. 1.1.1 (Released August 15, 2022)
Issues Fixed
Fixed an issue where the goal keeper would sometimes fail to react to a free lob pass from certain positions, which would result in a goal being scored.
If you've not tried out Mario Strikers on the Switch yet, it's well worth a look - we praised it as "simply the best sports game on Switch". Awarding it an excellent nine out of ten stars.

Ah the Pickford issue has been fixed.
Still haven't touched this game but I will once all of the updates are done.
I think I'll probably just archive the game instead at this point. Can't see myself ever playing it again as there's nothing to do. Was the biggest waste of money.
Glad we skipped this one and my kids haven't mentioned it in months. Sad.
Was wondering if this was the update to finish the actual game. Still not buyin.
I still don't see how this game got a 9 out of 10 and the moniker of best sports game on the system lol.
For those who don’t know: This patch fixes what the community has been calling the “Death Lob,” where you attempt a lob pass right over Boom Boom and he doesn’t even attempt to go for it, making it an easy and cheesy goal every time. I’ve had this one exploited on me a couple times online, so its good to see it fixed.
I’ve been putting alot of time into Mario Strikers myself 2 months later. The gameplay is very tight and fun. I like playing for my online club and toying around with the characters. I’ve yet to get an 8-Player game going (or even a 5-Player game for that matter), but I do think this is one of those games that are just as much fun to play co-operatively as it is competitively.x
@Kyloctopus
Thank you for the constructive comment! 😀
@Kyloctopus Impossible, didn’t you know the game’s not finished and there’s nothing to do and it’s a complete waste of money?
@BenAV Completely agreed, what a disappointment this game turned out to be.
@KindofaBigDeal
I'm a goalkeeper IRL (amateur, in water polo) and sometimes I also feel I need a software update like this.
Mario Tennis Aces is really good, MUCH better than this (and Golf in my opinion)
@Yosher for real, like the game is fun but i dont know why more reviewers didnt harp on the fact there was only one mode to play. it was a massive downside i rarely heard brought up
Glad I didn't pick this up. The game is way to content light...
@scottishwildcat Impossible, didn’t you know the game’s 60$ and we have every right to criticize for its lack of content?
Remember 20 years ago when Nintendo used to release complete and content-packed sports games on day 1 on the GameCube like Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis and Super Mario Strikers? And you could earn all the characters by simply playing the games instead of waiting for months to download basic default characters like Daisy and Shy Guy! And Animal Crossing was the same... Isn't progress wonderful?
@BenAV Same. Such a waste !
@Clyde_Radcliffe Just out of curiosity how many characters and stadiums are in the gamecube game compared to the Switch game. Is it significantly different. Were there more unlockables and things to do in the gamecube game?
@Wargoose I believe the GameCube one launched with 13 characters and the Switch one launched with 10, GameCube one launched with 6 stadiums and Switch one with 5 (although the Switch one has no effects) I'm sure there were more single modes or that the single player game had more depth but has been a long time.
The Mario Sport games have all been disappointing for me this gen. They all feel like basic, zero effort games that seem low budget and like they felt they could just finish the games later (Tennis literally patched in an intro video a year after launch, wtf?) It genuinely makes me worried for the next Mario Kart game.
@BenAV I'm even considering selling it, and I always keep all the games I buy for my collection.
I still don't understand how you guys gave this a 9/10. I bought it because of your glowing review and was thoroughly disappointed with the barebones content and pitiful online.
I hope this game teaches us a lesson or two about pre-ordering games or buying games just because it has Nintendo/Mario/any recognisable brand or character or series in its name. I was really excited to see this first time, but glad that I waited for reviews, etc. Saved $60.
@Clyde_Radcliffe - At least their not charging for those characters and arenas… yet
Held back on buying this after being burned by Mario golf still there is no reason for me to get this which is frustrating cos the actual gameplay is good
Boom Boom no longer lives up to his name and self-destructs your chances of winning? Great stuff. I'm not the biggest into Mario sports games myself (though I'm very partial to the N64 collective) but it's cool to see them fixing stuff people have complained about for ages.
@KindofaBigDeal Brilliant 😂
No stability?
If Nintendo treated Mario Strikers Battle League right, this game could have been just as popular as Splatoon or even Smash Bros. There's a huge audience for a high-caliber soccer/football game on Switch considering EA's legacy crap they keep pumping out and the lack of other sports titles. Sadly Strikers BL is just your average bargain bin annual release Mario sports game (worse actually considering it has significantly less content than the Switch Mario Golf or Mario Tennis).
Once they add in the next batch of characters, I'll pick this up. I don't see it being something I'm throwing hours into like Charged, but with just a little more content I'll get it to play here and there.
Am I happy about that statement? No, but nothing I can really do
Interesting comments on this game. I enjoy Mario Strikers as the core gameplay is pretty tight, but I definitely agree that it is very light on content. Especially moreso if you want more offline, single player content- without online the game is pretty much tragic as there’s not much variety or things to do/unlock/achieve. I mean even the slim stadium upgrades are locked to the online battle league silver coin payments and use which is silly. Hopefully they add more modes, characters, cosmetics, customization etc. very soon and not drip-feed content longterm.
Still waiting for a new Mario 3-On-3 Hoops, Mario Superstar Sluggers & Mario Sports Mix on Switch that are more expansive & comprehensive than the previous Mario Sports offerings this far.
… Wun can only hope.
@Yosher
I usually don’t buy into the “NintendoLife inflates the scores of first party Nintendo games” argument, but this one seems really fishy to me.
This game has nowhere near enough content to justify the asking price, with exhibition mode and a singular generic tournament mode that’s just playing normal rounds being the only form of content besides a tacked-on club experience that’s severely hampered by Nintendo’s woeful online service and the baffling limitations that prevent you from finding anyone to play with in the first place. They won’t even finish the game later like they did with other titles, as they’re just adding characters that should have been in the game to begin with, stages that all look the same no matter what, and a few cosmetics. I don’t have the other two Strikers games to go off of, but at the very least it looks like they tried to make a more well-rounded experience. Even Ultra Smash had a few different courts and plenty more characters. Here, there’s just nothing. The gameplay is really good, although it can get shallow after a while, and the presentation is befitting of Next Level’s pedigree, but there’s no game to house these two things in.
Hurrah, Boom-Boom is now slightly more competent than he was beforr!
@JakedaArbok Hitting the nail on the head with everything you said and it kinda makes me sad how right you are and also all the more confused why this site gave the game the score it did.
Honestly though I've probably ragged about the game too much already, I don't want to be negative about it all the time because there's certainly still people who enjoy it. I just wish I could be one of those people as well, but they're not making it easy to enjoy this game with this little content.
I wish I never bought this.. I also wish I didnt have the addiction for collecting video games which keeps me from returning it. Just stay away from this game.
This needed some actual content. They have a fun game here, but there's nothing around it. Needs a more robust progression system and single player content. Should have been a twenty dollar game at launch.
