Update: Square Enix has shared some more details about the upcoming Tactics Ogre: Reborn on an official blog post.
The developer has detailed all of the improvements to this version of the Super Famicomtitle, which is based on the PSP remake of the same name. We'll list them briefly here along with a summary, but if you want more information — including details on some of the game's characters — then head on over to the post right here.
First, let's start off with a summary of the series and this new revamp:
A brief history of Tactics Ogre
The Ogre Battle series, to which Tactics Ogre belongs, started way back in 1993.
The first game in the series to be released, Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, launched that year in Japan for the Super Famicon, and arrived in 1995 for players in North America. A unique combination of real time tactics and RPG, it was a real breath of fresh air for gamers, and it became a hit.
In 1995, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together was released in Japan for the Super Famicon. It would later be ported to PlayStation and release in North America in 1998. The game took a different approach to the March of the Black Queen, featuring a new isometric perspective, turn-based battles, super-detailed pixel art, and an intricate, branching story with multiple endings.
The game was one of those cases of lightning in a bottle - the combination of elements resonated with players, winning it a following that persists to this day.
In 2010, a team that included many of the original developers of Tactics Ogre created a remake for PlayStation Portable. It released in Japan as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune, and a year later in the US and Europe under its original name: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.
This successor featured a substantially improved story, a world filled with even more colorful characters, an updated game with new systems and a wealth of content to satisfy even the most hardcore players. The game was a critical smash, winning positive reviews from media and players alike.
Which brings us to 2022 and Tactics Ogre: Reborn! This new version of the game is based on the 2010 remake but features significant changes that make an already great game even greater!
What's new in Tactics Ogre: Reborn?
- High-definition characters and backgrounds - characters and backgrounds have been recreated in high-definition, preserving the detailed pixel art of the original to look good on HD screens.
- Fully updated user interface - menu controls have been streamlined and all UI is now in high-definition.
- Sound improvements - full voice acting has been included in this new release, and you'll be able to choose between English and Japanese voices. Composer Hitoshi Sakimoto has also rerecorded the entire soundtrack with a live orchestra!
Redesigned battle system
- Unit-by-unit levelling system - originally, classes were levelled across the board. Now, each unit grows on an individual basis depending on its class.
- Battle AI overhaul - enemy tactics have been tweaked.
- Playability improvements - auto-save, a quicker pace in battle, and new controls are just a few improvements that have been added.
We can't wait to get our hands on this, and we'll bring you more details as we approach the release date. Square Enix just can't stop filling out its end-of-year release schedule!
Original article: After months of rumours and leaks, Square Enix has finally confirmed that Tactics Ogre: Reborn is real. And, better still, it's coming to Switch.
Just a few weeks ago, the game's release date leaked on PS Deals, so we've pretty much been waiting with bated breath for Square Enix just to say the word. Now, this enhanced release — which is based on the 2010 PSP version of the Super Famicom game, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (which also came to PS1 in North America) — brings Yasumi Matsuno's classic strategy RPG back to a Nintendo console.
Here's a brief summary from the game's new website, along with a few additional screenshots:
Based on the 2010 release, the game features improved graphics and sound, as well as updated game design, bringing to life a new Tactics Ogre that remains true to its roots.
Tactics Ogre veterans will experience a game that surpasses their fondest memories, while players new to Tactics Ogre will discover a game unlike any they've ever played.
Reborn and deeper than ever, the game enables players to immerse themselves in the world and intrigue of Tactics Ogre like never before.
Switch pre-orders aren't available yet, but you can check out Square Enix's website and relive the hype over and over again.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn releases on 11th November on the Switch. Are you excited? Will you be picking this up? Let us know in the comments!

Glad they finally accepted the game was leaked and just made it official.
To anyone who hasn't played it, I highly recommend this one, especially if you like strategy RPGs. Story is excellent, but the gameplay is so fun, with so many options for your units. I hope this means Final Fantasy Tactics is close to getting a remaster as well!
Was hoping for a proper modern remake, not yet another "HD" 2.5D game. Il pass
Looks good, but there are A LOT of Tactical RPG's this year.
@UltimateOtaku91 It didn't even get the 2.5D treatment, in the trailer the character sprites look like they were upscaled on an emulator. Disappointing for sure, but what can you do.
Damn Square Enix, slow down.
Or, better yet, could Nintendo and SEGA start having this much interest in their back catalogues?
Insta buy from me. I loved Triangle Strategy.
Man, what a year it’s shaping up to be for fans of tactical games. Triangle Strategy was pretty great, I also played Fire Emblem on my 2DS and it’s just a beginning! Tactics Ogre, Mario Rabbids, and who knows, maybe they’ll release Advance Wars too.
Square Enix on fire at the moment!
@Masze and the metal slug tactics!
Switch gets this, Harvestella, Diofield and Triangle Strategy. That's a pretty good haul from SE in one year.
It's based on the 2010 release, but will it have the same story, characters and gameplay but with enhancend visuals, or will it be more like a sequel/prequel?
I love the nostalgic graphics in this, it reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
I like this quite a lot but...
Am I the only one who thinks that the dialogue fonts are ugly as all hell? I'm sure the gameplay will be as good as ever but man...
@tanaka2687 I was just thinking along the same lines. A Comic Sans-esque font in italics and block capitals isn't going to be easy on the eyes when reading hundreds of lines of dialogue. Everything else looks pretty good, though.
I have dabbled with this, FFT and Triangle Strategy, and I feel SE's strategy RPG's are really clunky and tedious, compared to something like the fluidity of Fire Emblem. Should I give this one another try?
@rex_rex Speaking of that, anybody know when metal slug tactics is out? I'm just seeing '2022'
@Lylat I wonder the same buddy. but like they said before, too many tactics/games to play.. and I'm slow with my backlog..
Sold! Y'know, we've had ActRaiser, now this. I'm starting to get hopeful we'll see RoboTrek and Terranigma.
Awesome to see confirmation of the Switch version. Man, Square Enix is really killing it with the Switch support this year.
Would anyone recommend this to players of Triangle Strategy?
Omg, what's going on with SE this year? My wallet!
Great news, never had the chance to play it, I'll get it for sure at some point!
The more JRPGS and SRPGS my Switch has, the better
I look forward to ordering a physical copy from Southeast Asia.
@tanaka2687
Agreed! Especially that there are so many different fonts being used.
Knight of Lodis is one of my all-time favorites, so I expect good things from this one.
Too many good games this year lol. But we still seem to be missing the biggest fishes (Starfield, BOTW 2)
Nice that this was finally confirmed. Would have bought on PS if I had to, but Switch is preferred.
Can't wait to sink dozens of hours into this the way I did with the PSP version way back when.
This is so awesome! This year is rivaling 2019 on the Switch for how many awesome JRGs/Tactics games released. If you are a RPG fan the Switch seems to me that must own system!
@rex_rex have they announced when that one will be out?
@Calbant don't think so.. still waiting..
Yes! Never played this and now I will!
Fantastic that it's now confirm, the Ogre series was always going to be on Nintendo it would make no sense for this not to come to Switch. Definitely picking it up before Thanksgiving. Would double dip also if a physical edition is coming too. Now please give us Final Fantasy Tactics next, I don't care which version, all of them would be fantastic.
Ah yes, the reason every single tactics game ever has "Everything I Say Has to Be The Most Profound, Serious Thing I've Ever Said" dialogue.
This is a fantastic time to be an SRPG fan. Can’t wait!
I hope we can get the other Ogre Battle games on NSO if SE has no other plans for them.
@Masze There is also Diofield Chronicle, I'm not completely sold on the game but hoping it will be good.
@rex_rex Oh yeah I forgot since nothing has been mentioned about it in a while, wonder if it's delayed until next year.
Yeah baby, sold!! FF Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time; I was never able to play Tactics Ogre, so this is an absolute dream to see this coming remastered to Switch. Bring it on!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!
Now if only they'd remaster person of lordly caliber.
I'd be in Ogre heaven.
(As long as Godeslas didn't feed me the fruit of the netherworld).
I'd imagine of the things that probably helped sell TO in North America was that it came out after the crossover game Final Fantasy Tactics.
(at least, as many people that DID buy TO for the PS1. Can still remember the ROM kiddies back in the day whining for someone to fan-translate the SFC ROM. Probably too cheap to buy the PS1 version, and even too lazy to find the means to otherwise acquire the game (especially at dial-up speed ) )
Unless this is cheap ($20 or so), I'll be waiting. Really would have preferred this to receive the HD-2D treatment like Live-A-Live did.
@Pungu I hope this means that Ogre Battle 64 is close to finally getting a remaster as well!
Maybe that will change after I play this game, but OB64 has the deepest story and most well-written dialogue I have ever experienced in any RPG, and it would be nice to play something that's not entirely in the same vein of Fire Emblem/FFTA. That game could use so many QoL improvements as well.
Yesssssssssssssssss!
It was a decent game but was still nowhere near as good as FFT.
@burninmylight Ogre Battle 64 may probably come to NSO but seeing as how the Super NES original was not on there yet I doubt we'll see it any time soon as Square Enix doesn't support NSO yet. Unlike Tactics Ogre though, the main Ogre Battle games plays similar to Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition in that you had to plan attacks and strategize your battle plan before it took place in the battlefield.
@Ralizah The digital version will probably be around $20-$30 but the physical edition will probably be around $40-$50 depending on if it's a limited release or not.
Reborn, perhaps, but not remastered.
I tried Ogre Battle a while back via emulation on the laptop. I couldn’t really understand how it all worked but it seemed like a fairly ambitious title for the time. I’m sure this version will include a tutorial of some kind.
All over this one! Thanks for making it official SE!
I am excited to finay play this.
Joy to the world
@Kiwi_Unlimited Yes, that would be a dream!
The burning question I have is... are we going to get full camera control like in Triangle strategy? This alone would represent a huge upgrade in my mind. After 100+ hours into TS, going back to the 4-way limited rotation is a little bit rough.. Overall though.. still a top 10 game for me.
@Lgndk11r Absolutely... I think that if you like TS you're likely going to love Tactics Ogre. The main thing is a cool story + the customization is super deep and interesting
The only hang up I have revisiting this on my PSPv (after 100+ hours into TS) is that Tactics Ogre does not have full camera control which feels really dated after playing TS.
I am desperate to know if the remaster has update camera controls.
@Serpenterror The only games that come to NSO are games that the publisher doesn't deem worthy of a reboot/remake/rerelease any time soon, like ActRaiser, the Scarlet SaGa series, Dragon Quest, and so on. RPGs are especially susceptible to this.
OB64 (and TO: MofBQ) is exactly the kind of game that would get the celebrated remake treatment, likely in HD-2D a la Live-A-Live. Therefore, I don't see them coming to NSO until Squeenix decides what to do with them, and an NSO release pretty much tells us that no remakes are coming and that's the most we'd be getting for a long, long time.
Personally, I'd prefer remakes over NSO ports, but something is better than nothing.
EDIT: Decided to go look up some info on OB64 and learned that Nintendo published the original game in Japan while Atlus published it in the West. Square Enix might not have any publishing rights to it. It may be completely on Atlus.
Even though I have yet to find the time to appreciate Triangle, I am already looking forward to this one.
Oooh, Tactics Ogre, and it’s on Steam!
[hops on over to store page]
They want $50 for this?!
Never mind!
@Serpenterror It’s a $50 game, with a $60 deluxe, unfortunately. Outrageous price for what it is, and an easy pass.
I only dabbled in Tactics Ogre and it was fun. But I would rather have a new proper Ogre Battle myself. It's a shame that series has been forgotten.
@Masze I could have sworn I read February of ‘23 for advance wars
I still have the psp version ready to go on vita. Might wait for a sale
Curious as to how the AI will play.
Ogre Battle 64 will always be my fav despite the game failing to ever mention critical systems to the player
This is absolutely amazing! Really hope for Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64 getting remasters, since they are so unique and amazing as well!
With this release of Tactics Ogre, I am hoping for Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen to be released as it was one of my favorite games from the SNES.
The hand-drawn characters are pretty, but seeing the same square-jawed, beiged-out look on everyone leaves me bored. Even if the gameplay, story, music, etc., are great, when the characters look so generic, it makes me want to pass.
