Horizon Chase Turbo turns seven this month (yes, seven!) and to celebrate, developer Aquiris has implemented a substantial free update for all players, introducing a new mode called 'Adventures'.
Adventures mode allows players to unlock a vast selection of skins for their car collections and race across over 170 tracks, with Aquiris stating the update introduces 8 hours worth of new content.
Here's how the new mode will work:
- Each time a new car is unlocked in the classic World Tour mode, a set of 5 tracks will become available composing a new Adventure to get through. When the player completes all the tracks of each adventure, one exclusive skin is unlocked.
- The player needs to unlock all the cars in the World Tour to be able to access the 34 Adventures, once the 5 races of each adventure are won, the special skin for the car associated with that adventure will be unlocked.
It certainly sounds pretty extensive, and we're always up for some free new content! Horizon Chase Turbo happens to be pretty excellent, too; we gave the game a hefty 9/10 in our review and called it "a worthy successor to Sega's Out Run". The game has been subject to multiple additional updates over the years, but this new one definitely sounds like the biggest one yet.
Will you be checking out 'Adventures' mode for Horizon Chase Turbo? Start your engines and let us know in the comments!

I don't get the appeal of this game. It feels like you're driving a bumpercar at 200+mph
I enjoy this one more than most other racers. Wreckfest is probably #2 on the list.
Stuff like GT/Forza/Grid can just nope right off. Fun like getting slapped in the junk with a live tuna.
Worthy succesor to Outrun sounds very interesting. I will watch a Youtube video and decide whether I should play it.
A free update after six years is nice.
Awesome news. This game was a pleasant surprise. Other then Mario Kart, and Forza Horizon this is the only other racing game I play. Although it feels more of a successor to the Top Gear series to me.
Such a great game & one of the best bang for the buck arcade racers out there. A must have for your collection.
@Jhena it's worth a purchase for sure
Wonderful game before the two DLC packs. It just gets better and better!!! It's as fun as it gets considering the genre
@Tasuki same here. 100% Top Gear, not Outrun
@Zulzar Did you play the likes of Outrun at an arcade in the 80s?
I loved Top Gear back in the day and yes, as others have mentioned, this is very much like that. It’s a game I’ve actually triple dipped on. It’s a game I haven’t heard about in sometime but I have not forgotten it, in fact i was just wondering when we’d see another update from the excellent formula racing update. The music I can still hear certain tracks in my head and I love the colors in this game. I’ll gladly pick this back up.
@sword_9mm GT, Forza and at one time Mario Kart are my gaming staples. I still love Mk, but I have been playing it since 2014.
@Olliemar28 How many tracks are added to the base game because there are a ton of DLC exclusive cars?
Just to clarify, this can’t be 170 NEW tracks, can it? I assume it’s pre-existing tracks clumped together in groups of 5 for each car model, to be raced with that model for a new skin, yea?
HUGE FREE DLC - Who likes FREE DLC?
If small companies can do this, large companies can too.
170 new challenges. And very difficult challenges. YESSSSSSSSSSSS
This game is insane...I play it on Steam and Switch!
Games like:
and..HUGE FREEEEEE DLCs !
Didn’t realize this was releasing today as well. This is a terrific birthday surprise!
This came out days ago, can't believe you're only just reporting it now lol
Great game! I believe it's on sale for less than $9 now. As of last night, anyway.
@TYRANACLES it isn't it's been out for days. I've finished loads of it
@Duncanballs
Who hasn't played Outrun? lol
I get what they were trying to do here, I just don't feel they pulled it off. It feels cheap, the cars feel and collide like blazing fast bumpercars and can't I get into it after revisting it a couple of times. I really wanted to like this game.
@TYRANACLES Triple dip hell yah!
❗️I prefer both 'Gear Club: Unlimited' Games.
I’ve been playing this update all weekend. It was nice to get back into this game again.
@TYRANACLES I have tripled dip as well. Got it on Switch, Xbox and PS4 I even have it on Android as well. Such an awesome game and agree the music is so awesome.
One of the best racing out there!!
Nothing will top Out Run and that classic tune Passing Breeze that plays as you get closer and closer to the finish line. Sorry but it's true. You just don't get that feeling with racing games today.
Horizon Chase is amazing! And yeah, it reminds us of Top Gear/Racer ^^
@RubyCarbuncle Yup Sega needs to get off their asses and make a new one
This game isn't like OutRun really at all gameplay wise. It's more like the Top Gear SNES games. They even got the composer form those to compose this game.
I think this is still the only racing game that feels designed for the Mario Deluxe Wheel (unlike even Hotshot Racing, which Looked like it would be perfect for that, but is more stressful than Fun)
Can't wait to set up enough time to play through this!
For me, after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Virtua Racing (Sega Ages), Horizon Chase Turbo is the third best racer on Switch. Heck, I even have it on PS4 and iOS, too, but despite the systems lack of analogue triggers, I play it most on Switch. Great game.
Nice, can't say no to free stuff. This is things you wish garbage like Gran Turismo 7 actually offer.
Is this going to work on both the digital AND physical versions of the game? (Unlike the Senna DLC)
I enjoyed this game a lot - until I got really frustrated with how the CPU cars always move to where you are trying to go. Obviously you work around it, but eventually I felt like I'd gotten my enjoyment and uninstalled and moved on.
Pretty good racer though. It was one of the best on Switch for a long time.
Great game just happened to dive back into it the other night! Was hoping to hear news of a sequel but 170 tracks is ample! For now. Couple people here mentioned Sega and doing a new Outrun which would be awesome and in thinking about it if they’re adding some Outrun games to the Genesis mini 2 then it makes one hope it’s a possibility. LOVE Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006!!
@Zulzar and that's AWESOME
Does anyone know if they fixed the issue with multiplayer where the game would crash every three or four races?
I noticed a notification a couple of days ago that the game was updated and was curious about it. I'll definitely give it a go. It's such a great game - probably the best racer on the system - as the speed is so intense the racing quite pure. It's almost like F-Zero in the buzz it provides. It's one of my most played games at 80 hours.
@Tasuki OhMyGod I LOVE the Top Gear series. Looks like it's time to play Horizon Chase Turbo
Love Horizon Chase Turbo and this update made my night. I play with my 3 sons and we’ve had some intense races. Love unlocking the new cars and skins too. We’ve worn out Mario Kart but this isn’t far off as far as family fun goes.
This will be a good excuse to get back into it. It was already a fun game. NICE !
@Zulzar I'd say it gives you the joy of racing but takes away many of its complexities - just focus on dodging cars, taking curves in time and do some simple boost/fuel management.
And for older folks like me it also plays into nostalgia, as its gameplay, looks and music are straight out of early 90s titles like Top Gear, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge & Outrun.
@Mr_Horizon Lotus Esprit, now you are talking! Would love some Amiga classic collections on Switch.
Wow! The game that keeps on giving, 7 years later. I'll definitely be trying this out.
@demacho lol no hate to those who love the game. have a blast.
Is this not just Outrun with extra steps? I've never understood the appeal? Would you not simply play a racing game that actually allows for control of your vehicle as opposed to an on-rails track? Feels like the side-step sections of recent 3D Sonic games.
@Mr_Horizon I'm 40, myself. I enjoy all those games you mentioned especially the Outrun series this game just isn't on par with those in my eyes though I can surely see the inspiration in it. I've revisited the game a couple of times because I really, really want to like it. I actually hate that I don't because I had no doubt in my mind that i'd love it.
It's a great little game this, and once you spend a bit of time with it you get rewarded.
It's not Outrun. You're racing against other cars not the clock. It's very much so Top Gear. (As if the soundtrack didn't make this obvious enough - so it's clear the Outrun comparisons are from people that have read but not played. Do yourselves a favour - stop commenting on HCT articles and start playing it!!)
@Duncanballs Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 was one of my favourites. The Pea Soup password for the Fog Level is etched into my brain forever.
Already had it. Played it again. To me it feels like Out Run
@Zulzar ah yeah, I know the feeling of "really wanting to like something". Maybe there'll be another game soon that hits the spot better.
That's incredibly nice of them to do that.
One of my favorite racers. Glad to see more content. I need to bust this out again.
