The crypt has been silent for five years, reads the trailer for the new Crypt of the Necrodancer DLC. Frankly, we like our crypts silent, but we're not Brace Yourself Games, a studio that presumably needs people to know about their games.
Crypt of the Necrodancer, the beloved rhythm-dungeon-crawler that would eventually spin off into a Nintendo-sanctioned Zelda collab, Cadence of Hyrule, is coming back from the dead with all-new DLC. The new content pack, which is called SYNCHRONY, will include new characters, items, enemies, traps, weapons, spells, shrines, and more.
Here's some info on the new characters:
- Chaunter — Possesses enemies and fights using their powers
- Suzu — Speedy character with an invincible dash attack
- Klarinetta — Does battle with a huge two-handed sword
Alongside the new stuff, players will also be able to play online multiplayer in both co-op and versus modes, with up to seven other people (eight in total).
SYNCHRONY is currently in Early Access on Steam, where it costs about $7 (with 10% off as a launch discount until August 11). The game will have full mod support on PC (courtesy of Australian startup mod.io), but likely not on Switch; however, the developers have stated that there are "even more features to come during Early Access", so this is just the beginning.
But wait, there's more! At the end of the trailer for the DLC, Brace Yourself confirmed that a sequel to Crypt of the Necrodancer is in the works, and it's called Rift of the Necrodancer. The only clues to the game are the voiceover, in which a character says "looks like they've got it handled... and me? Well. I've got somewhere to be," the general '80s vaporwaviness of the title, and the description of it as "a new standalone rhythm game in the Necrodancer universe". If it's more of the same? That's alright with us.
No exact news on release dates for either the DLC on Switch or the sequel, but keep that ear to the speaker and we'll let you know when we know.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Amazing news!
Also, "Necrodancer" is probably my favorite pun/play of words
The learning curve on this game is pretty steep, but once you get there, it proves to be a really rewarding roguelike. I'm so psyched for more content.
I was only ever able to beat this game with bomb guy, AKA baby mode. So I'm hoping the sequel offers an equivalent difficultly level. But cool nonetheless. I'll take some more remixes too, please!
Love Necrodancer
I wish I played more of Cadence of Hyrule though, I kinda never fully got into that game's DLC because I had other things going on. ...
WIll be super excited to see what new kind of Necrodancer game we're getting.
I didn't like the coop of this game, maybe if you didn't have to share rythm gauge/combo with your partner...
Sounds good. Crypt of the NecroDancer is one of my favourite indies. I started playing it on Vita then put in another 60 hours on Switch. Funnily enough, despite owning Cadence of Hyrule since launch, I’ve still not started it. Perhaps I should finally get around to sorting that?
Im intrigued, it looks vary fun, and ai loved the demo for the loz one, so this is an obvious buy.
@The_Pixel_King
You definitely should! The gameplay fits pretty well with a Zelda game, but the best part is the soundtrack.
Given that the first sequel was a Zelda crossover and that rifts usually are portals, I'm sincerely hoping that Rift of the Necrodancer is a giant crossover game spanning several universes. It'd be a natural progression of the idea (original, crossover sequel, bigger crossover sequel) and could potentially be a really fun idea! I always love it when indie IPs crossover.
(also this could just be my biased want for the crossover game talking, but did the song in the end seem to have hints of Undertale's "MEGALOVANIA" in it to anyone else?"
Neat! Although I'm mildly curious why this wasn't announced in the upcoming Indie Direct later this month. Perhaps they didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle?
@MH4 Undertale has music in virtually every modern rhythm game. I would be more surprised if they didn't include a few songs.
FFS...
What the hell was the point of issuing a physical release if they still had DLC in the works?
OH HECK YEAH.
Now i need to play this.
And a sequel!?!?
That's awesome. Been forever since I've played Necrodancer but I'll need to go back to it when this hits Switch. Such a fun game, even if I'm still bad at it after 80 or 90 hours.
Hard to get excited by DLC, especially after the sublime Cadence, but I'm eager to see what the sequel's like.
I do prefer cadence to the original but I will get the DLC in support. Good dev.
Dark souls looks like a kirby game next to the original crypt of the necrodancer. I can't wait to play the sequel.
I think this was my second or third Switch game, but I never got past the second level because it's just so hard. Now that I've finished Thumper and Steredenn (among others) 100%, maybe it's time to go back and give it another try.
That's cool but this game is so hard I'm not sure if I'll ever get through all the base game's content, let alone buy DLC for it.
"Disco ain't dead," "We like our crypts silent," and "vaporwaviness."
Kate is a gift to the internet.
