After years of delays, Digimon Survive is finally out at the end of this month. And publisher Bandai Namco has shared a brand new trailer today showing us what to expect from the game.
Part visual novel, part strategy RPG, Digimon Survive is all about uncovering mysteries, interacting and making friends with Digimon, and surviving. Trapped on a mysterious island, you can explore to talk to people and search for clues by selecting an area on the world map. You'll have a phone-like device with you at all times too, which will enable you to scan for glitches.
And in true visual novel style, you'll have the chance to chat, not only with people but with the Digital Monsters you meet on the island. Your choices will affect your relationships with your friends and the Digimon, and with the latter in particular, certain responses and affection levels might lead them to Digivolve!
In battle, you can also talk to your Digimon pals to encourage them, heal them, and help them. You can also talk to the opposing Digimon, where you'll have the chance to recruit new allies. But sometimes, you'll have to fight, and all of your favourite Digimon from the show will be present to use in strategy RPG battles. Environment and positions are crucial for doing critical damage.
You can watch the short trailer at the top to see how everything comes together, but we're getting more excited the more we see on Digimon Survive. July is a fantastic month for Japanese RPGs, and we don't really know what to do with ourselves!
Digimon Survive launches on 29th July on Switch. What do you think of the combat and dialogue segments? Let us know down below!

I don't know much about recent Digimon games (or recent series/movies) but I loved Digimon World. I'd love to see something happen with that series.
This game looks interesting... the 2d art is really good, but you'd expect that from such a long running anime. Not sure I'm keen on the way they "animate" them in battles though, more tweening and warping. yay. If the story is really good and the battle system is deep enough, I could be swayed
Looking really good, still sad that it releases at the worst moment possible. Hopefully it gets good sales.
@samuelvictor Since you mentioned World, I should inform you and the other casual Digidestined of the localization problem Digimon had for a while.
Digimon World released back on the PS1, and with it came a naming convention that was used on most western releases afterwards. In Japan, they used different names for the different series of games, World for the pet sims, Story for the RPGs, etc. In the west however, they were all mostly given the name of Digimon World. It would be like if Sega continued to name every western Sonic release after Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure Shuffle, Sonic Adventure Heroes, etc.
Take the DS Digimon games, Digimon World DS, Digimon World Dawn, World Dusk? Those were the first games in the Digimon Story games in Japan, World DS = Digimon Story, World Dawn = Story Sunburst, World Dusk = Story Moonlight.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth was the first time they dared to use the Story branding. If you have a PS4, they released an entry in the Digimon World series on there, I just forget the subtitle. For the casual fan wondering what the difference is, World is a Tomodachi like game, where your Digimon at most have a lifespan of about a month before they get reborn as better or worse Digimon. Story is a mission driven dungeon crawler.
Survive is a new take on the series that I'm excited for. Hopefully all of those delays didn't just prolong the inevitable.
@Knuckles Oh! Thanks for that, I had no idea, that's confusing and stupid. I hate when they do that kind of thing with Western releases of games and mess up continuity of everything.
The only "World" I played was the first, though I really liked it and played it a tonne. I was aware there were more games and assumed they were basically the same with nicer graphics etc, but I just never got round to them. I had no idea the other games labelled "World" could actually be completely different. I do have a PS4, so I'll keep an eye out for the sequel on that.
I'm only a casual Digimon fan, only really watched the original series, the "movie" (if you can call it that, being its just some specials awkwardly cramed together) and played that first game, plus I had a Tamagotchi style toy. I definitely have nostalgia for the franchise and fondness for the characters though
I like Digimon games a lot I've played a lot of them but they really couldn't have picked a worse day for the release date. I'm still going to buy it but I fear the game will suffer because of a certain other game.
Day 1!... is what I would be saying if it wasn’t out the same day as Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Now I’ll probably pick it up in a digital sale at some point.
Sold off of the gameplay and the fact that I can use fan favs like Wargreymon and Baihumon.
@HeeHo I came here to type the exact same thing lol.
It seems like the delays helped this game rather than hurt it! I'll likely purchase Digimon: Survive on day one since I'm not buying Xenoblade Chronicles 3. However, it does conflict with a Sims 4 Expansion pack I will certainly purchase. I'll play more of the Sims 4 in the days after the pack release...
This game is gonna get eaten alive when it’s competing with XB3. No idea why they didn’t delay again. They already delayed this game this long anyway what is another 1 month delay at this point?
@samuelvictor The PS4 version of Digimon World: Next Order is currently on sale on the PSN store. I picked it up because I wanted to play it before Survive comes out 😅 definitely worth having a look at.
@DJP- Ooooh cool, thanks!
Wow seems like they are taking a page from Triangle Strategy and go the 2D HD route with the battle system while the story route takes the graphic novel aspect.
