Dreamed Away is a lovely-looking pixel-art RPG being published by Pineapple Works, and it's coming to Switch late next year. This game looks warm and cosy on the surface, but underneath its guise hides a mystical, unsettling vibe that's akin to Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.
Developed by solo developer Nicolas Petton, who was inspired to create the game after the birth of his second child. Dreamed Away focuses on the sibling bond between Théo and his sister Louise in a small French village in Brittany. Théo wishes to reconnect with his sister, but struggles emotionally, which is where the cosiness and charm wash away into something a bit darker.
The cartoony pixel art style reminds us a lot of EarthBound — and we know we say that a lot, but there's something really charming about the look of the characters and the gentle, idyllic village setting that lulls us into a false sense of security. The unusual enemies and the mystical, magical settings don't do much to settle our nerves either.
The combat also gives us a little bit of Undertale — a game which, while turn-based, relies on reacting and dodging attacks. Dreamed Away's combat is a little more real-time, and you need to dodge AND react with attacks at the same time.
Pineapple Works shared some of the upcoming RPGs features with us in the game's press release:
- Cozy and safe atmosphere mixed up with unsettling and dark mood full of doubts
- Externally introspective: Dive deep into Theo’s fears while exploring the game’s story
and world
- Alternative way to battle: pre-equip varied abilities that can affect the stats of the player
or enemy and/or impact gameplay. Each ability has a side-effect
- Engaging turn-based combat system with real-time enemy attacks
No specific release date has been announced for Dreamed Away, but we do know we'll need to wait at least until the end of 2023 to get our hands on it.

Whelp, this is now on my radar!
Looks like an Earthbound with a horror spin to it.
This look absolutely ace! My Switch and I need this game now!
You say a lot of games look like Earthbound because it's a cheap and easy style to copy. 90% of the time, means the game will be meh at best as well due to lack of effort to add interesting visuals.
This looks like someone tried RPG Maker for 10 minutes and gave up though.
Looks interesting, just need to see more to see if it could be exciting.
Nice, I'll keep an eye out for this game.
LOL, the description made it sound like a potential legendary game but obviously the reviews will tell the story. Visuals are just okay and, yeah, Earthboundy
i am sentimental for the 16 bit late 1990's rpg look..
It looks pretty good, but is it "dedicate a big chunk of my lifetime for an RPG" good? We'll have to wait for the consensus.
Yeah like a mix of earthbound with that undertale atmosphere
It may lure you with the earthboundish vibes and then turn out to be an underdeveloped crap. Actually, I don't have time and patience to play RPGs short of top tier ones. On the other hand, there is still a chance that it'll be a unexpected gem.
I'm getting GBA rpg vibes from it.
@SteamEngenius Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass and Lisa have entered the Chat.
always bothers me when in game and promotional?/official art are a bit mismatched. i think the in game look here is nice enough though.
I was interested at first, but that "battle system" looks not fun.
Oh wow an indie game with notes of earthbound, undertale, and spirited away?
So like 90% of indie trash
The teaser was very brief and didn't show a lot, but it did it's job because I want to play this one! End of 2023; that's a ways off.
From the main character, I'm getting more of an alternate universe 16-bit A Boy and His Blob vibes... without the blob
Looks interesting regardless. Hope it pans out.
... Wun can only hope.
