The absolutely legendary game designer and programmer John Romero has announced he's working with a major publisher on an "all-new" first-person shooter and is now hiring.
In an announcement on social media, John shared the following message on behalf of Romero Games - calling for talented people to join the team:
"It's a new dawn for Romero Games. We're working with a major publisher to develop John Romero's next shooter: an all-new FPS with an original, new IP. Out team is expanding, and we're looking for talented people for all positions and at all experience levels, particularly those with Unreal Engine 5 experience."
John Romero was one of the co-founders of id Software in the '90s - paving the way for the first-person shooter genre and coining the term deathmatch. Apart from Doom, he also worked on series such as Wolfenstein, Hexen and Quake.
He founded his new studio with his wife in 2015 which most recently released the strategy RPG Empire of Sin on Switch and multiple other platforms. The classic games he worked like Doom and Quake are also available via the Switch eShop.
No release date or platforms have been revealed for Romero Games' new title yet. Would you be interested in a new FPS from the team at Romero Games? Comment down below.

Would be nice if it was Nintendo but that wouldnāt ever happen.
@Qwertyninty Their last game came to Switch though. Although it wasnāt very good.
Sadly Romero hasnāt had a very good track record after leaving id so Iām not exactly looking forward to this game. I would love to be proven wrong though!
I still remember the horror of Daikatana.
@undomiel hehe good one !
Will it make me his b**** again?
Aww i would have preferred a new empire of sin game personally.
I'm going to be excited until they inevitably announce it will be a F2P game.
Hoping 'Major publisher' means good publisher, but far too many of the 'major' ones are scumbags these days so unlikely.
As for if the game will be quality or not. We know Romero has the talent to do good, but guess depends on the quality of the developers supporting him as well (Yuji Naka's recent efforts come to mind).
heeeyyyy, that's pretty cool!! I love the original id Soft guys. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this.
Yeah... I wouldn't get too excited.
Romero's track record isn't the most stellar after he left id Software.
@undomiel the fun part is that the GameBoy Color version of Daikatana (which he had nothing to do with) is freakin amazing, like a cyberpunk Legend of Zelda with pretty awesome music.
I was excited, then read the comments, sooooo.
I'm so glad someone mentioned Daikatana. Romero's got vision, but his execution has an awful track record. Best wishes, though. I'd rather he get his moment to shine instead of being the butt of yet another post-ID joke.
Oh, so HE'S the one behind Empire of Sin. I remember that game being featured prominently in Nintendo's E3 presentation for I want to say 2019, but I didn't think it looked particularly good. I'm pretty sure it got mediocre reviews when it came out. With his pedigree, though, I guess it makes sense why they put a spotlight on it, even if the final product wasn't great.
My older brother grew up on the original DOOM, but I've never really played it. I doubt anyone can relate to this, as most people probably don't struggle with anxious thoughts to quite the same degree as I do. But when I hear the 16-bit sounds of anguish as the characters on screen are shot, I have a hard time disassociating it from the Columbine tragedy, as I know that game was supposedly somewhat of an inspiration for the two perpetrators. Maybe I'll get over it eventually, but as of right now, it just disturbs me too much to play the game because of this arbitrary association my brain has made between a video game and real-world events. Is the game a trigger for anyone else, or am I just weird?
Can't wait to see what the new game would be like. Y'all had to realize it's not gonna be the same team that made Daikatana even though Romero is the leading member.
Whats his hit ratio?
Even though I have great respect for the man, I have lost sight of most of what he's made after Doom. Then again, FPS games aren't my main cup of tea either.
@Qwertyninty
Haha I though exactly the same! onecandream^^

I am psychotherapist and I full on validate your experience. I donāt share it, however I remember those sounds you mean and my brain can reproduce it rather ānicelyā Hope your mind does leave you lots of room for a high life-quality at other things. Else CBT can help. Sorry to intrude like this.
Romero is a a has been since 2000. Daikatana II would be fun just for the memes cause the first game was near unplayable. Hope its decent
@marck13
Hey, no worries--I appreciate it! I suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder, which used to be rather debilitating. I could hardly leave the house without getting a panic attack. I struggled with it severely for about six years until December, 2020 when I started seeing an OCD specialist. I had several ups and downs and reluctantly started medication late last year to manage my intrusive thoughts.
The meds have helped tremendously, and I would say I'm functioning quite well now! I just started my first job, and pretty much the last major hurdle for me to work on is getting comfortable with driving a car. I've had my license for years, but it's still something I've long avoided when I could get out of driving myself. At this point, DOOM might not even bother me anymore, it's hard to say. It might be worth doing an exposure exercise for, though it's not really a game I'm dying to play, necessarily. I imagine it wouldn't bother me at nearly the same level of distress as it used to.
Anyways, thanks again for reaching out! I've already familiarized myself quite well with CBT, but a couple years ago, this information would have been invaluable. I'm obviously not one of your clients, so you had no obligation to say anything to me; but the fact you went that extra mile indicates to me that you really care about your patients.
OCD is an incredibly misunderstood condition, and it took years for me to understand what was "wrong" with me so I could get out of that mental hellscape. I hope you'll continue to raise awareness, as I have also taken it upon myself to do, to help others who find themselves severely crippled by a mental condition they have no awareness of. Education about this stuff is deeply important, and I wish someone could have pointed me to the right resources much sooner. God bless you, good Samaritan!
Daikatana 2: John Romero is going to make himself your b***h.
I actually liked Daikatana š
Suck It Bown
@Not_Soos
Well, look at Doomworld.com, Doom has a nice and big Fan Base.
Media is often blamed for Stuff as Columbine, as it is easier to blame Music, Movies or Games instead to question the social Problems in School, Family and Society that caused them to murder innocent People.
Doesn't necessarily mean it will be good look at balan wonderland
Iād really like the dooms on switch to patch in local wireless play so we can have a modern take on a LAN party.
@Azuris I don't mean to imply that I think video games contribute to real-life violence in any substantial way. I'm actually in agreement with you--the problem runs far deeper than that. It's just that I can't play the game without thinking about what was going on in their disturbed heads, as one of the boys was documented to have written something to the effect of, "It'll be just like DOOM" shortly before the attack. Like, I'm sure they reveled in imagining the enemies in the game as their would-be victims. It isn't that I think the game caused the tragedy--it's just that DOOM and Columbine have become almost synonymous in my mind, and I can't think about one without the other. There are games that are far more gruesome by today's standards, but they don't bother me in the same way because I don't link them to a shooting. Nothing against people who play it, and I don't think they're inherently more violent or anything. If I ever get over this hangup, I wouldn't be opposed to playing the game for myself. It just gives me anxiety because I have a problem with overthinking.
They should make it super atmospheric that plays with your sanity and call it MOOD.
I wouldn't be hyped as he have done many failures after Doom.
He also failed with a few FPS'es.
I think it is hard for commercial creatives to maintain the intensity of their youth. I hope Romero pulls it off because video games are fun.
Nobody seems to be proofreading articles on this website anymore. Feels like the Dom-era all over again.
@Not_Soos
Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response and how awesome to hear of your progresses! Yes, OCD is still very missunderstood. While the 'obvious behaviour' can be greatly distracting and cause imense suffering, the key - as by my experience - is to find and work through the underlying emotional-trauma/blockage (often fear and also disgust/guilt/shame..). My deepest respect to you and your progress. It's often a walk trough hell to expose yourself to those deep fears/feelings. Just the best wishes for your future! Very strong of you also to even talk so openly about it!
