Today sees the arrival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge across multiple platforms including the Switch.
In case you missed the coverage in the lead up to its release, this is a classic-inspired brawler starring not only the turtles but plenty of other familiar faces. There's also multiplayer for up to six players. If you're still not sold, read on to see the round up of the reviews so far.
First off, we'll spotlight our own briefly. We gave the game an "excellent" 9 out of 10 stars:
- Nintendo Life
- REVIEW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - The Best Turtles Beat 'Em Up Ever Made
Right, with that out of the way, here are some thoughts from elsewhere - kicking off with IGN, who gave this new release 8 out of 10:
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is exactly what it looks like: A lovingly crafted reimagining of the TMNT arcade beat-em-ups from one of the best beat-em-up developers in the business today."
Nintendo World Report gave the turtle's latest game 9 out of 10:
"In short, if you’re a TMNT fan or love beat-’em-ups, you’ll surely dig the colorful and upbeat Shredder’s Revenge, especially if you can find a few other ninjas to kick back with."
GamingBible was just as taken with it, awarding another 9 out of 10 score:
"File Shredder’s Revenge alongside the likes of Streets of Rage 4 and River City Girls as a contemporary masterpiece of its kind, an exemplary demonstration of how to spruce up a stylistic road well walked already after so many go-straight experiences, and somehow make the journey so much more special than the destination."
EGM gave it 4 out of 5 stars, but did have a few issues:
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge looks to bring back the glory days of Konami’s side-scrolling arcade beat ’em ups and home hits based on everyone’s favorite young green ninjas. In its visuals and gameplay, Dotemu and Tribute Games have not only matched those retro classics that they’re paying homage to here, but perhaps even surpassed them. Sadly, this trip through time is somewhat marred by inconsistent audio and an Arcade mode that feels more like a slog than a thrill."
And last but not least, GoNintendo - another outlet that absolutely loved it:
"TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is the genuine article, and once again proves how Dotemu has an incredible respect for/understanding of classic beat’em-ups. Now we know that Tribute Games is capable of just the same, and these two teaming up has resulted in not just one of the best TMNT games ever, but one of the best beat’em-ups in years."

I'm just waiting for the game to finally be available to play.
The game truly makes you 'FEEL' like a ninja turtle.
I'll probably grab the game this weekend; it's actually a reasonable price which is nice. I'm very curious about the story mode.
@Erigen your comment gave me spiderman ps4 review flashbacks.
The 3 P’s:
Preordered. Preloaded… and uh… Pizza!
Sounds turtle-y awesome!
Digital, cheaper and now. Or physical, more expensive, later. First world problems..
I wish the simpsons arcade would get ported, not really a beat em up guy tho
I bought it physical from LRG so I'll be a Hero in a half, shell out now and wait a half year later.
Glad it has reviewed well.
@BASEDSAKRI Yet you're asking for a beat em up game. Fortunately in a time where arcade games are getting second life, it's likely it'll get its time to shine soon, AVP already got it with the Capcom's arcade thingy, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder got release through Sega Astro Mini, arcade TMNT games are being included in the Cowabunga collection, all versions of Street Fighter III got included in the SF 30th Anniversary collection, arcade versions of Punch-Out! & Donkey Kong games got released by HAMSTER, the Battletoads arcade game by EA got included in Rare Replay, both arcade versions of Killer Instinct 1 & 2 got included in season 1 & 2 package of Killer Instinct reboot for Xbox One, and Red Earth is getting included in the Capcom Fighting Collection so The Simpsons Arcade game may not be that far behind, Disney just needs to get interest for the game or released it at the right time (like maybe on a Simpsons Anniversary or something).
@Freek
Subscribe to Game pass if you can ( even if for a Trial and you will be able to play it at the premiere to soften the blow of waiting for your copy
Have it preloaded, waiting for it to unlock even though it's 4:30PM on release day as of writing...
@Freek Should had just pre-order at Amazon or Best Buy instead. The physical copy of Shredder's Revenge is not a limited physical release so retailers like Amazon, Play-Asia, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc., are all going to carry it. You just had to wait til September to get it. Hopefully LRG ship same time as the rest.

Just a few years ago when Double dragon Neon was released IGN at that point said the beat em up Genre was dead. They gave Neon a really crappy score which made no sense whatsoever to me so whatever they've got to say about shredders revenge i couldn't care less.
I know what i like and a great turtle beat em up is something I've wished for since Turtles in time! Looks and sounds to me like we are getting just that! Cowabunga indeed!
@Serpenterror @liverpoolvk
Nah, I'm a physical collector so I ordered it through both LRG for the Radical Edition and Signature Edition Games for the Special Edition (ships on the 29th) so I don't have to wait too long.
I can wait, I have a massive backlog anyway.😁
Thanks for the links and options though.
I won’t be getting it. I like TMNT, but don’t care for the ‘Fight and Go Right’ genre.
All items on my wishlist have been officially put on hold so I can focus my budget on this treasure.
Expected nothing less honestly, game looks fantastic.
pre-orderd and have been up since 5am (UK time) and still it won't allow me to access it yet..... I wish Nintendo would sort this BS out but looks like I may have to wait till 2pm or 5pm when the eshop is updated......so frustrating
@roy130390 yeah same, 5:22 am on the east coast in the states and i still can’t play, wtf
@Patendo if you go to the page it says “Estimated release date 6/16” wtf lol, does it have to be 6/16 for the whole world before we get a chance to play? Hahahaha
@nymbosox It is so bad! I wish there was some info to let you know what time it will be live from.
Physical version is part of Target's 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' deal this week.
Gnarly dudes! Last year it was love at first sight for me, so I’m glad this new Turtles game is worthy of its righteous lineage.
It’ll be a long wait for my physical copy from Signature Edition, and I’m gifting an LRG standard edition to my brother later.
Preorderd £29.85 base.com, looking forward to it, just need a release date for The Cowabunga Collection now.
I downloaded it at midnight but it still isn't available to play in the UK.
8:55 am in Brazil and still unavailable
Pre-ordered it, so excited to play this when it finally launches on it's launch day, 5 minutes before midnight. Oh boy, gotta love these pre-orders!
its 1pm now, do frustrating with this nonsense! Nintendo needs to sort its digital Pre-Orders out lol
I thought we could start playing at 3:00 am.
It's AVAAAAAILABLE!!!
Cowabungaaaaaa!!!!
It looks great although I'm not a big fan of TMNT. I'll likely pick it up on a sale down the road.
ITS AVAILABLE WOOOOOOO
@CarlosEFML Wooo!! Just played the first level. First impression is great! Not only am I loving the visuals, but everything just feels great. So fluid and satisfying. Oh I’m so happy
beat it with every character.
ready for sequel.
my uncle used to work for the shredders revenge
Can't wait to play it!!!!!!
Waiting for the physical release at the end of July. £29.99 in most UK stockists with keyring and pre order booklet!
The turtles look spot on with the squatty aesthetic but applying it to all of the other characters makes them look…off? Outside of that, it’s a really enjoyable game!
I'm buying it today as my personal birthday gift!
Congrats. Hopefully things go well, all things considered....
Totally torn, love the Turtles but not big fan of beat em ups....
Just defeated Shredder for the first time and man that song hit hard I have the chorus stuck in my head now "we ain't kangaroos!!" Oh what that's not what they said?
Aside from being Ninja Turtles and not Hero Turtles (as I grew up with here in the UK) I love everything about this, despite side scroller beat em ups not being my favourite type of game generally.
The nods to the original 80's cartoon which I still love to this day has made it unmissable for me.
darn really have to get myself this game at my next paycheck.
now THIS is how you do a modern beat em up!! this game is PURE BLISS!!! The controls are so smooth and pure fun!! COWABUNGA!!!!!!!
@Erigen "leonardo throws foot soldiers at the screen with the exaggerated swagger of a turtle teenager"
