The era of unusual, highly-stylistic games like Ghost Trick, Zero Escape, and Elite Beat Agents is sadly long over — and weirdly enough, it coincides with the demise of the Nintendo DS, a console that encouraged weird games more than anything.
But the spirit of the DS lives on — in games like NEO: The World Ends With You, and an upcoming game from Necrosoft and Brandon Sheffield called Demonschool, which draws its inspiration from the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series, as well as Italian horror cinema (why not).
Demonschool is a delightfully grungy isometric tactics RPG themed around a demon-infested school, where your enemies will range from Yakuza members performing summoning rituals to your own fellow students, who've been possessed. You will play as Faye, the last remaining member of a legendary demon-hunting family, on a mission to rid the school of the demonic scourge alongside your (un-possessed) classmates.
The tactics part sounds really interesting, and we'll defer to the official description here so we don't get it wrong:
Demonschool is a streamlined tactics game where movement equals action, decisions can be rewound, and speedy mechanics remove the genre’s traditional cruft. Plan each student’s moves at your leisure, then hit the action button and watch it all play out in devastating, character-based combos. Destin, a hot-blooded fighter, can knock foes forward into Namako’s debuffing dash, and damage dealers like Faye benefit from shrine keeper Knute’s helpful wards. Adjust strategies for monolithic bosses and unusual battlefields, bucking genre conventions. Unleash tide-turning special moves to keep the demons at bay—if they reach the back line, the human world is lost.
Sounds fun, right?!
Have a look at these delicious screenshots:
Demonschool is slated for a 2023 release on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X.

This is COMPLETELY right up my alley. Day 1! Let's hope for a physical!
Reminds me of Devil Survivor more than anything. Intrigued, but I need to see more gameplay first.
looks great! was it in one of those indie streams?
@nintendolife
Humankind is rated for Switch but didn’t get announced for Switch.
Don't say the word "persona" on here 😂
I might get it. If there’s a physical edition, my purchase is more likely.
Looks extremely good. Wishlisted.
@Mr_Gamecube it will come to switch, sega have said they want all atlus games to be multi platform, during the xbox show they didn't have the "console exclusive" or "launch exclusive" banner for the persona games which means they aren't just for xbox, I think during Nintendo's next direct they will get announced
Ya know, I never really thought about it before, but the DS really was the home of "out there" games, and I haven't see that to the same extent on a Nintendo console since.
This really does remind me of the DS's glory days. I will really have to check this out.
Wow! This looks really good! I'm interested
@Mr_Gamecube
It seems like its more a case of whether or not it could run the game well rather than if it could at all.
There's often not much of a pattern on what games will run well and which wont since it can depend on a number of factors such as the developers familiarity with the hardware or what engine its running on. There are games which are exclusive to switch or launch on switch first which have performance issues.
As for this game i do agree with it having a very ds/psp era look to it.
This was the most exciting announcement of the day for me.
Firstly, this looks great! What a fantastic graphical style and beautiful sprite work that meshes very well with the 3d!
Second, on this site recently we had a discussion about the Welsh language and several people asked more about it. The company logo says Ysbryd Games... "Ysbryd" means "Spririt" and is actual pronounced like you are saying "Spirit" in a Welsh accent
Crazy that Persona 3P, 4G and 5R, were announced for Xbox before a Nintendo console. Not to mention Soul Hackers 2, such an Atlus thing for them to do.
There's something so aesthetically pleasing to me seeing 2D sprites in 3D environments, or the more uncommon vice versa.
Will definitely be picking this up
@UltimateOtaku91 totally agree!
Love the look of this game! I'm sure my sister would play this
Ahh, a new Brandon Sheffield joint. Hyper Gunsport was a good game and I listen to the Insert Credit podcast regularly. I'm sure this will be pretty cool.
Not really into school themed games but I do love a tactics RPG so this looks pretty good!
So yeah, I want this badly. I love how it sounds like an updated tactics game in that it does away with the typical flow of them.
I’m still looking forward to metal slug tactics but this might actually get my money first!
@Mgalens it shouldn’t have issues about running the game well either. P3P and P4G literally on inferior handhelds specs wise the PSP and Vita respectively. P5 was on PS3 [No Royal didn’t make the game more taxing compared to vanilla P5 beyond adding more content]. It’s not even an engine issue because Catherine Full Body that IS on Switch is the same engine that is used in Persona Dance/P5
It’s obviously business redtape issue rather then technical at this point when suddenly current gen Xbox platforms has P3P, P4G, and P5R that even Sony current Gen platforms didn’t get yet. MS moneyhat to pad the Gamepass lineup. P3P and P5R isn’t even going to Steam, but MS store for PC
This looks absolutely fantastic! Fingers crossed for a general physical release.
@Arawn93
Ah the catherine thing is reassuring regarding their ability to get something like it running well on the system (though the main hurdle now would be the business red tape you mentioned)
Somebody probably said this already but it reminds me more of Devil Survivor than Persona
I can't wait for this
@Mr_Gamecube just been announced for ps5 so I'd wager the switch announcement will be at their direct
Wow this looks awesome! A physical would be great, but this is going into my wishlist either way. The artstyle and graphics are super cool looking.
