As is the norm, today's Indie World showcase had quite a few 'out today' reveals, and one of them was Soundfall. Developed by Drastic Games, it looks rather intriguing, as it'll blend action looter play with rhythm-based mechanics.
The trailer gives a good flavour of the gameplay, and impressively it'll have a huge library of songs that should give it plenty of variety - some official details are below.
This fast-paced, rhythm-based dungeon crawler combines looter-shooter action with musical gameplay that’ll keep you tapping your toes. You are a Guardian of Harmony – a musical genius transported to the world of Symphonia by the Composers to battle the forces of Discord. Time your actions to the music to increase your power, with more than 500 pieces of equipment for skill customization and thousands for loot combinations. Venture out solo or with up to four players in local and online multiplayer to fight through dynamically generated levels and encounters inspired by the music. There are more than 140 songs to choose from, giving opportunities for many playthroughs.
We rather like the look of it, and if you're feeling spicy you'll be able to pick this up on Switch today - let us know in the comments if you're tempted!

This looks like a more action-oriented "Crypt of the Necrodancer" and I'm here for it!
Diablo meeting Necrodancer? Count me the heck in. Definitely among this IW's biggest highlights.
Crypt of the Necro-Dancer crossed with Enter the Gungeon/Hyper Light Drifter? Oh yes please.
The fact you can also change the music to whatever you want is surprisingly free for a game like this, big fan.
meh. Some aspects look amazing. But the vibe from the main characters just feels really generic with what's current.
I'll probably wait on a review first; but the gameplay does sound very intriguing, not gonna lie.
This looks awesome and I love the music in the trailer, but I really don't like rhythm based action games
Looks good, although all it did was remind me I want to play Cadence of Hyrule so I ordered that on cartridge!
I've been playing this since it launched 2 hours ago, and now that I stopped for lunch and work, I can say it definetely delivers a unique challenge. It's not quite as punishing for off-beat performance as Crypt/Cadence, but it still pays off to stick to the rhythm.
Traversal of jumpable gorges and transport rails will be impossible without pressing your dash at the key points in beat, but you are generally safe until you get it right.
In combat, keeping in rhythm is important. You can dash and shoot as much as you want (except during brief cooldowns, or when off-beat for too many shots), but you do full damage and get I-frames on your dash only for staying on point with your rhythm.
Also, there's a combo-multiplier that adds up when you beat an enemy, and the combo timer refreshes when you kill OR when you make an on-beat dash or shot. You lose the multiplier when you take a hit or go too long without a beat action, so it's more important to shoot or dash in rhythm in a timely manner, and avoid damage, than to actually hit anything, to maintain your combo and get access to better loot when you open the boomboxes (there's tiny ones that are simply stage decos, but there's larger ones that hold new weapons and armor, and healing pickups).
Different song styles will yield different enemies and loot as well, so it's worth replaying stages with different music, too. Harder, rock-driven or hip-hop tracks will yield more weapons and more offense-boosted enemies, where smoother, more symphonic music will have more armor and tankier foes.
Even if you lose, you may have to start the mission and song over again, but you get to keep the XP and treasure you found so you can gear up and try again.
Looks pretty cool but doesn't seem to be going to any sort of beat at all? Guess it's more showing off flashy things than the rhythm gameplay.
I've played Pistol Whip on VR and the rhythm/shooting combination is neat in theory but ends up being sloppy and not really going with the music when stuff gets intense, I'd assume this would be the same.
We’ll, I’m HOOKED! Word of warning: once you hear the song “Fly, Fly, Fly” it will NOT leave your head. I’m listening to it on Spotify right now after playing the level like 8 times in a row just to hear it lol. This one is something special, and I’m not usually into rhythm games. I’m sick so I’m stoked to park myself on the couch tomorrow and just get into this even more. Don’t sleep on this one folks, it’s extremely well-crafted top to bottom.
I want to get it, but I'm broke lol
Looked great to me. I'm waiting on reviews.
