So the big video game of the first few months of 2022, Elden Ring, has already seen the demake treatment this year in the form of a lovely-looking PlayStation recreation (which our friends at Push Square covered). But that was just the trailer. Someone has been brave enough to make a playable demake of FromSoftware's absolute masterpiece — but not on the hardware you were expecting.
On Reddit, user -shin- has shared a project that they're currently working on — a fully-playable demake of Elden Ring for Game Boy. Created using GB Studio 3.0, they plan to at least finish up to the end of the Limgrave area by the end of May. We can't imagine they'll recreate the entire game (have you seen how big Elden Ring is), but that would be mighty impressive?
-shin- has got pretty much everything down, from the dodge rolling to the "You Died" text on the screen. It's an extremely faithful recreation of the beginning of the game. And -shin- confirmed that this demake will be playable on original hardware. Well, time to die over and over again on the ol' grey brick.
This isn't the first FromSoftware game to receive the demake treatment, either. Bloodborne — you know, yet another critically lauded brilliant action RPG — also got a PS1 demake called Bloodborne PSX which Push Square also covered. But, even more amazing than that, the same developers created Bloodborne Kart. Yes, really.
There are plans for a demo to be released at the end of May, but to keep up with its development, you can follow -shin-'s Twitch channel or check out their YouTube.
What do you think of this Game Boy demake? Will you be trying it out? And what would you like to see demade for the Game Boy? Let us know in the usual spot!

Only slightly worse graphics than the PS5 version.
@Orokosaki Is it that bad? Playing via PC and PS5 myself, I haven't noticed major visual disparities between them (and when it comes to performance, the PS5 has been consistently better than my rig so far).
@Orokosaki one of the most carefully crafted gaming experiences and one of the most impressive gaming worlds ever created full of life with blowing trees, light rays, awesome voice acting, addicting gameplay loop, and rewarding gameplay and all you can say is that you think the graphics are bad? Wow… did you come from the future or something?
I would love to play this on Gameboy but in all honesty, I’m most excited for that Dragonborne DX release
on the horizon. I will NOT miss out on that one.
@Orokosaki
Well looks like it runs better than the real thing at least.
Finally, it's coming to Nintendo hardware. To be honest, that Gameboy demake looks better than Pokémon Legends Arceus.
@ChromaticDracula If you are into new GBC games, check out Infinity if you haven't already. It recently went through a Kickstarter campaign and looks like it is going to be pretty fun.
Uh… Elden Ring looks amazing on PS5. And I had no major performance issues or bugs after 150 hours of playing - it didn’t even crash once, which is sadly rare for newly released games of this scale.
I’m sure some people have had issues - but for me this felt more polished on release day than 90% of AAA games I’ve played in the past decade.
My main criticism of the game is that after a practically perfect first half, the gameplay starts to feel a lot less well balanced once you get past Leyndell - but that’s a design issue, not a performance one.
(I know I’m straying pretty far from the point of the article - sorry.)
So tired of hearing about this boring game
Haven't played Elden Ring yet, but it does look cool. Not sure about this demake yet though, looks to be in early days.
@Gitface hey thanks! I think I saw mentioning of Infinity somewhere but I need to go check on that now.
Still, absolutely getting Dragonborne DX regardless. I skipped the first version but will not miss this DX variant. Especially because it can also play in OG Gameboy too (comes on a black cart, not the clear GBC-only one.)
Thanks again!

@ChromaticDracula it’s a great game no doubt but in terms of graphics it’s not pushing the system at all.
@jrt87 @Sondheimist You go and defend that bunch of code! You know you're still allowed to enjoy things even if others don't without defending thy ladies honor, right?
@ChromaticDracula I have been eyeballing Dragonbourne DX as well but haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet.
Well at least I can try Elden ring to see what this fuzz is all about
Original GB got issues. Why don’t they take advantage of the faster GBC cpu and memory?
we just need BOTW Link modded into elden ring and then my life is complete
@SteamEngenius So you can say a game is bad but you cannot say a game is good?
As you sat, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
@Orokosaki That is the PS5 version, its the before video.
@Broosh Nope, not at all. It's an amazing game.
