We're champing at the bit for Dotemu and Tribute Games' upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, a brand-new brawler which sees the four heroes in half shells return to what they know best - kicking shell and taking names!
Dotemu has released a behind-the-scenes video, which is planned to be the first in the series, looking at the game's development. This first entry, titled 'Once upon a shell', sees Tribute Games’ Co-Founder Jean-Francois Major and Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert sit down with a cuppa to talk about how Shredder's Revenge came to be.
As it turns out, both Dotemu (who was working on Streets of Rage 4 at the time) and Tribute Games were pitching a TMNT brawler to Nickelodeon at the same time. So, instead of challenging each other at the arcade, they decided to join forces.
The two studios were adamant from the get-go that they wanted their Ninja Turtles to be based on their 1987 designs, and with years of fanboying behind the developers, Major relished the chance to take on the next TMNT game:
“Contributing to an iconic universe like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an incredible opportunity on any level, but even after completing a TMNT project years ago, I always held out hope that I’d be able to create an experience set in the original era that inspired so much of my childhood wonder. We finally found a partner that shares Tribute Games’ passion for the Heroes in a Half Shell’s debut. Getting to continue the legacy of the classic, beloved TMNT beat-em-ups that fans around the world grew up playing is surreal.”
Imbert comments on the partnership between Dotemu and Tribute Games more than favourably, too:
“The reputation we’ve built with exceptional partners through modern classics like Streets of Rage 4 was vital to beginning our journey with Nickelodeon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. Tribute Games clearly shares our passion for the world of TMNT. Their deep understanding and devotion to the essence of classic beat-em-ups makes them the perfect force to ensure Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the evolution of brawling fans deserve.”
Both studios have the perfect pedigree to create a modern-day arcade classic, and like any good behind-the-scenes video, there are whiteboard doodles, figurines on shelves, and all kinds of TMNT merchandise. It's clear both Imbert and Major are passionate and excited to get their vision into our hands, and we cannot wait.
Shredder's Revenge is due out sometime this year. How many times have we watched the reveal trailer? Oh, just a hundred handful! Let us know how excited you are in the comments!

I hope Shredder’s Revenge and Cowabunga Collection aren’t far apart. I’d love to binge it all!
I am so excited about the Cowabunga collection and Shredder's Revenge that I made these! I am a big Ninja Turtles retro games fan!
Cant wait for this and the collection to drop. Plenty of hours of fun to be had there.
@Zuljaras Wow, these are incredibly good!
I still don't get why any of the announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games don't have a release date yet. C'mon Nickelodeon, Konami, DOTEMU, even Capcom gave release dates to the Capcom Fighting Collection and the 2nd Arcade Stadia and those were announced way after those TMNT games.
@Zuljaras Oh my god those look incredible!
So hyped for this and the collection.
@Jackpaza0508 @The_BAAD_Man Thank you guys!
Hoping for a non-Limited Run physical like SoR4! With a keychain in the box and everything! Though I'd rather have a pizza coupon. Good year to be an old turtles game fan!
Cannot wait for this game! With this, Streets of Rage 4, and River City Girls, are we about to enter a new era of beat em ups? About time, count me in.
I absolutely can't wait for this! Beat em ups are my favorite couch coop experiences and this will be such a fun one.
@Roz1281 there’s no way Limited Run will get this, it’ll definitely be a mainstream physical release thankfully.
This looks dope and it looks like their hearts are behind it. Just give us a RELEASE DATE!!!
Day one purchase here.
The original toon version is the most iconic
@Zuljaras They are fantastic mate, absolutely brilliant!
This game is day one for me (I'll pick it up physically as well) and I would pay for one of those statues of Michael Angelo playing his NES, great work 👍
I’m soo excited for the collection & Shredder’s Revenge. I just want the release dates right now for them both PLEASE!
Ooh the making of ... a game
I am so ready for this and the Cowabunga Collection.
@Zuljaras Wow those are so cool. Great work! I love the pizza slice on Leo's katana.
Panzer Paladin and Flinthook were great! I am more excited for this that the Cowabunga Collection by a longshot.
Shredder's Revenge is looking fantastic! It's really nice to see the devs' passion for the project, too. Those of us of a certain age remember the fun times pumping quarters into beat-em-up games like this, and have been waiting a long time for a revival of Konami's TMNT in particular. We are so going to be spoiled for TURTLE POWER this year!!
I'll add that I'm glad they went with the retro 90s character designs, since they are channeling the golden-age TMNT games of the past. That said, if the more modern Nickelodeon designs were to appear as unlockable characters, I certainly wouldn't mind! My daughters don't even recognize the old April O'Neill. ^_^;;
@Zuljaras
You must get peppered by these every time you post photos, but... THOSE ARE INCREDIBLE STATUES!!
You have such amazing talent.
Michelangelo himself would be impressed (the sculptor).
@Mostik Thank you good sir!
@Half-ShellHero Thank you!
@Teksetter Thank you!
I got most of my photos uploaded on a image sharing site and I just pull them out when I want to share them on articles that are appropriate for them
Will the Cowabunga Collection have a code for infinite lives?
I saw that NBA Jam in the background. Maybe we can get a successor to that sometime...
@Zuljaras looks dope, congrats!!
(Pssst!... @alanahagues... Major and Imberts quotes are both the same)
Is it weird that this is one of my most anticipated games of the year?
@Desrever Not anymore! Thanks for letting me know.
@Zuljaras incredible!!
Game looks promising. Hope to enjoy it with my kids
Looks great! Cowaaabungaaa!
@Teksetter So am I
it honestly feels surreal that were soon going to be playing a new four player TMNT beat em up.
I hope they add Casey Jones as a playable character
@alanahagues the turn of phrase is "champing at the bit." It is derived from horses. Weird thing I learned I was saying wrong as well.
@Roz1281 now that's a throwback(thinks back to the Pizza Hut adverts in the TMNT beat'em ups on the NES for some of the stages).
So dope! I'm amped for a new TMNT Game. Hoping the delays means they're adding more content... i.e. variety in level design, some vehicular/racing stages (Turtle Van w/ Weapons, Surfing, Gliding), maybe some vertical/platforming to mix things up etc.
Also wishing for lots of cosmetics, costumes to unlock like skins, palette swaps and accessories along with a steady diet of new unique characters to the lineup (Venus, Slash, Spike, Casey Jones, Dimension X Teens, Oroku Saki, Hamato Yoshi etc.) + additional bosses, sub-bosses and transformations, maybe an achievement system too.
Hopefully this does well and inspires a resurgence & renaissance of cool, fun, new licensed arcade brawlers updated and coming to Switch with modern features (X-Men, Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare, Battletoads)... basically call Konami and others lol!
… Wun can only hope.
