Vanillaware's latest title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, finally landed on Switch yesterday, letting you bring the mystery-laden, mecha-battling, mind-bending story on the go with you. But if you have a physical release of the game, it seems like the surprises start even before you get a chance to boot up the game.
A few days ago, Twitter user @5wayshot got a boxed version of the game ahead of time. When they open the box, it looks like it's just plain and white inside, which is a little bit boring! Dig a bit deeper, and remove the cartridge, and there's something waiting for you:
Aww! An adorable little kitty! This little cat shows up throughout 13 Sentinels, with characters often fawning over its soft fur, so he gains the name "Fluffy" as a result.
We had a little hunt online to see if anyone else had managed to spot this black and white moggy hiding under their Switch cartridge, and we've got more footage of this mystery being uncovered.
Whether these two actually spotted the cat is another thing, but he was right there! We saw him! We swear. It's a pretty easy thing to miss, to be honest. If you're just a little less observant or a collector who never opens their cases, you'll never get to uncover the mystery of the cat in the box.
If you have the physical release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim on Switch, go and pay your furry friend a visit. And, well, why wouldn't you have the game already? We gave it a 9 /10 in our review, and we think it's absolutely marvellous.
Are there any other fun secrets inside Switch cases you can think of? Let us know if you remember or find any!

That's cute but it's like... normally when the inside of a Switch case is just plain, it's considered lazy, and a sign that not much care is being put into the Switch release. If you're going to go through the trouble of actually making a custom design for the insert reverse side, why would you make it seem like on the surface you've gone with the lazy/uncaring route?
The Doki Doki Literature Club physical also had a cute (or disturbing) touch under the cart as well.
That's cute, definitely getting this game. I want to buy this on playstation (the digital version usually discounted to $20) but I think I'll get the physical version on switch.
Aww, cute little Kitty!
Still annoyed that hardly anyone does instruction manuals any more, there is clips to hold it in, but Nintendo can't be bothered.
This is such a great game. I have it on PS4 but I really am thinking about double dipping. Nah, better hold off.
Is the cat only in the Switch cases or is it also in the PS4 cases under the disc?
I hadn’t noticed this - I’ll have to take another look
@wiiware Yeah, I’ve seen the physical and digital versions on PS4 go for around £20 for a while and been wanting to play it for ages but PS4 is not the place I’d want to play something like this. Picked it up on Switch and it’s the perfect platform for it (Vita would’ve been too if that version wasn’t cancelled). Definitely worth the extra money to have it portable!
I never understood "unboxing" videos of regular edition videogames. What is even the point? There's only the gamecard inside, that's it.
I noticed the cat when I opened my copy yesterday. I always look for artwork on the inside of my Switch games. It's nice to have something, but I was hoping to have some nice Sentinel artwork or the playable characters. Oh well, something is better than nothing. Great game so far, it looks amazing on my Switch OLED and LG C1 OLED TV!
13 Sentinels: Schrodinger's Cat
Thought the cat would jump out and pull ya into the game.....
I’ve been seeing a lot of coverage for this game lately, is it an rpg or is it a visual novel? Looks pretty interesting tho
@larryisaman I bought switch from the first gen machine (v1), then bought the lite and v2, but I rarely play it. But man switch oled is a treat, it's like supercharge psvita, it's fun playing games on its 7inch oled screen. I just hope nintendo sells optional left joycons with great dpad like psvita 😃
