NIS America has released a brand new trailer for their absolutely bonkers-looking murder mystery shmup (yes, really) Yurukill: The Calumniation Games. Penned by famous manga writer Homura Kawamoto, the game sees a group of convicted detainees at the Yurukill land, a twisted amusement park headed up by the mysterious guide Binko. These detainees and their partners, called "Executioners", must solve puzzles in order to prove their innocence and escape the park.
It's impossible to overstate just how jam-packed this game looks. With a Danganronpa-esque killing game premise, tense puzzle sections straight out of the Zero Escape games, and bullet hell segments created by G.rev, veteran shmup developer of Border Down, Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX+, and Under Defeat HD, there's nothing else like it. We get a glimpse of those vertical shooter sections in the above trailer, too, and they look every bit as polished as we'd expect.
Here's just a "taste" of what to expect from the game, straight from NISA Europe's store page:
Renowned author Homura Kawamoto delivers a twisted, multifaceted story in Yurukill. Accused of arson and the murders of 21 people, protagonist Sengoku Shunju is forced to fight for his freedom and prove his innocence. As one of six Prisoners, he must pair up with one of five victims, referred to as Executioners, within the confines of the strange and secluded amusement park known as Yurukill Land. Together each of the five teams—Mass Murderers, Death Dealing Duo, Crafty Killers, Sly Stalkers, and Peeping Toms—must face and overcome the entertainment venue's so-called "attractions" in order to attain what they desire. Should the Prisoners succeed, their crimes shall be pardoned. But if the Executioners win, they will be granted revenge for their loved ones.
The in-depth story offers unique gameplay experiences including collating evidence, gathering testimonies, and solving puzzles.Yurukill’s shoot-‘em-up gameplay developed by veteran developer G.rev features action packed and fast-paced combat. In addition, online leaderboards give players the opportunity to see how they stack up against the competition.

Will you be picking this up when it comes to Switch in the summer? Let us know in the comments.

I've been excited for this since its announcement. A visual novel / shmup mashup. It's really quite...novel. Come, lets talk about it. https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/yurukill_the_calumination_games
Sounds good to me!
I'll need a review but this sounds very promising!
Seems intriguing, the idea of the Prisoners being paired up with the victims, having to come to terms, and atone for their crimes, or prove their innocence is really cool.
Those are a combination of genres I'd never have thought to hear in my lifetime.
Not a shmup fan, but this looks pretty interesting. Profoundly weird combination of genres.
I'm here for it!
June/July are really busy with games I'm interested in. Sunbreak, nirvanA Initiative, Yurukill, Three Hopes, Live-A-Live... yeesh.
I hope this is as promising as it sounds!
This sounds amazing, this might be one of the rare day1 games for me.
@dBackLash ditto … I usually don’t care for anything visual novel but this looks great
@Captain_Toad any zero escape type of games on Switch though?
Interesting. Border Down and Under Defeat are absolute Dreamcast must plays. Now I'd love to see a Shikigami no Shiro revival.
@anoyonmus AI: The Somnium Files is from the same writer and has a lot of Zero Escape nods in it plus the Somniums are structured similarly to the escape rooms, though tonally I'd say it's more comparable to Danganronpa.
They literally copied Indiana Jones
The demo is up on the JPN eShop.
