If you're in the mood for some old-school Contra-style action, then you're in luck; retro shooter Super Cyborg is looking to scratch that itch, and it's on the way to Switch on April 1st.
The game will be released by Drageus Games and was developed by Artur Games. It's already available on Steam, with an overall rating of 'Very Positive' based on a total of 425 reviews — not too shabby!
Here's a rundown from the game's official Steam page:
Super Cyborg is an old school non-stop hardcore run’n’gun action game! You are an elite battle cyborg who is sent in to investigate a series of anomalies on a mysterious island. The merciless and powerful alien known only as the ‘Xirxul life form’ has been awakened by unwitting scientists and now: all humanity is in danger! Shoot, run and jump through 7 levels filled with endless hordes of biological terrors and some of the fiercest boss fights in any title. Destroy everything that moves on this island, because if it moves- it kills!
Are you ready to save the Earth?
It certainly seems like it will be a nice alternative for those looking for that 'classic' Contra gameplay. As for the Contra series itself, Konami's most recent effort with Contra: Rogue Corps was met with overwhelmingly negative reception, receiving a 4/10 on our review.
At least we got the Contra Anniversary Collection, eh?
Will you be picking up Super Cyborg when it launches on April 1st? Let us know in the comments below.

looks good and love the soundtrack! Might get what on a decent sale
I remember this game , i played it on steam. I am a huge Contra fan and this game felt like part of the series for me. Will buy it for switch i don’t like to play on pc i opened a steam account just to play this game.
Wow, that trailer really screwed with my eyes there, looks way too manic for me.
sold on the music alone (unless it has a ridiculous price tag, but yeah....sold)
Yes day one, looks superb 👌
Wow that's hot, day one buy for sure on the foolish day of the month. On Steam this is only $5 so would definitely check on that first.
Looks as cool as Blazing Chrome did, which did justice to the Contra series too. If we had brought the Contra team from the 80’s to 2022, we would probably get a very similar product!
Good for them going 4:3. Glad that’s coming back lately
Looks great! on Steam for £3.99 too, and there's a demo you can try there. Definitely going to give this a whirl having played a tonne of Blazing Chrome.
The transitions screen gave me headache 😅
Can I use the Konami code on it though?
Oh wow, that looks JUST like Super C lol, and that's no bad thing for me. Super Cyborg, huh... Super "C"... I see what the devs did there
It basically is Contra, with slightly gooier monsters.
@NinChocolate Why? I really don't understand the 4:3 craze. Unless you don't own a wide-screen TV, I see zero appeal in this choice. It's the bad kind of nostalgia. It's like the indie games that make the feel of the jumping and knock-back annoying on purpose just to feel "authentic."
Why would making a game wide-screen ever be negative? (Serious question, BTW, maybe I'm missing something here).
Cyborgs or robots? Hmm... trade descriptions act...
@sketchturner well it’s definitely not a craze because I can only think of one other game released recently that’s done this, so I wouldn’t worry. I’ve also not seen anyone else make comments about the aspect except for me, lol.
Nobody is saying widescreen is a negative. I’m just rooting for the use of 4:3. It’s entirely aesthetic. Look at this game, it’s painstakingly made loads of visual choices to make it appear like a game from the past. None of this is necessary, but back then all these things were limitations which have now become entirely aesthetics, including the 4:3 aspect. The dev is going for a fairly complete retro feel here, and so the 4:3 framing makes a big impact visually to complete that look. Like a classic car from the 1940’s having white wall tires instead of more modern all black wheels. It’s going the extra step to preserve the era it came from. And back then, all console games came with pixels inside a boxy television, and people love that now.
I played through the demo on the pc version last night. It was awesome. It's pretty much a clone of Contra/Probotector, with some of the features and death from Hard Corp on Genesis.
Based off of what I played, it doesn't feel as polished as Blazing Chrome, but it's still fun and well-designed.
I'll probably get the switch and pc version, because I like anything that does contra well.
Contra meets Abbodox.
Has anyone been able to get the cheat codes from the PC version to work on Switch? (40 lives, level select, weapon select)
I bought Super Cyborg years ago on Steam. I'll probably pick it up again now it's out on switch. It's the most blatant contra rip off ever, but that's a good thing. Plays identically to the NES games. It's the best Contra game in decades
