Around a month ago Square Enix opened sign-ups in some territories for the early access beta of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, giving eager fans a chance to check out the localised mobile-only prequel. Now invites are starting to roll-out on Android, with one of our team getting a notification to download the app.
We've taken an initial look and have started a save, working through the tutorial so far and getting a feel for the mechanics. After the initial install the game wants additional downloads (which work in the background as you play the opening), so if you have limited mobile data perhaps wait until you're on Wi-Fi. After a small 14.5MB download you then have to choose between 644MB or 868MB for the main download, the latter including Japanese voices.
In terms of content it seems to be the full game, or at least you have the option of which path to follow (there are three). It's due for a full release this Summer, so if you haven't got an invite to try it yet there won't be long to wait.
We'll certainly give it a look over the coming days and share some thoughts - the beta encourages players to share screens and so on, but avoid all story details beyond Chapter 1. Below, once again, are some of the official details for the game.
HD-2D for smartphones – 3D CG screen effects added to pixelized graphics create a magical world on smartphones.
Eight-character party command-based battles – Form a party of up to eight characters to fight in evolved command-based battles. Smooth gameplay with swipe controls.
Choice of story between three reigning champions – The setting is the Orsterra continent. The protagonist is a “Chosen One” who will fight against a great evil that has achieved fortune, power, and fame.
Field commands – Take various actions towards characters on the field. Try out all sorts of things, such as “Listen” for information, “Steal” an item, “Hire” an ally, and more.
Let us know if you've had an invite or are planning to check this out!

So this isn't a port?
Kinda lame that after how successful Octopath was on the switch, Square just decided to make a mobile exclusive prequel.
Why is this only Android and not iOS? Really weird.
I got in. Pretty fun so far and does look absolutely gorgeous. Haven't delved deep enough into the mechanics to know if it'll have lasting power though. Story seems pretty interesting as well (never played Octopath) and I do like the characters (Triangle Strategy turned me off due to it's overly bland character design) so far.
I loved the original on Switch, but I'm pretty nervous about the Android game. Thankfully I got in so I will give it a test run tonight.
@iLikeUrAttitude Have to agree. I know mobile gaming is particularly huge in certain parts of Asia but when I see a franchise move to mobile, I just write it off in my mind and never look back.
The game is absolutely stunning on my mobile phone and it feels as potent as the Switch game. It even has the vibration when hitting breaks. BUT it seems to lean quite heavy on ads, pay to continue, pay unlock adventures and so on. Might destroy it for me, would rather pay a premium price once and get rid of this kind of stuff...
Remember guys even if they touted this game as a prequel to the Switch original, do realize that it's still just a free-to-play game meaning if the game ever fail to live up to expectation it could easily be gone by the flip of a switch. Don't fall for it, don't invest in it. If it does indeed failed, Square Enix will have to sell it as a full game later on for consoles. Even if they don't, this will show them that we don't want our favorite franchise downgraded to live service mobile quality like this.
Like other free-to-play RPG like this, they limit grinds and put stronger weapons, items, and inventory behind a paywall while making earning gils and exp. more difficult. If you do plan to invest in this then good luck to you and all your hard earn money, if you play this without using money then good luck to all those wasted times you're gonna have with this money hogging title, this is not Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, it's Octopath Traveler: Cash of the Cows.
i will never play the game, but wow, that soundtrack is even better than Octopath Traveller
Now with even less controller support
It feels like the game relies on rubies for everything. I haven't played long, but it looks like a gacha and I don't know if it's playable to the end without spending a lot. I'd gladly pay 10-20€ for a good prequel, but I won't pay anything in-game currency and many paywalls.
Experimental side projects like this used to be released on handheld consoles. Now, they get dumped onto mobile platforms... And become littered with mobile F2P gatekeeping to boot. Very disappointing.
It would be as if Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was released on mobile instead of the GBA, and gated all of the recruits behind a gacha system, along with all the other exp/time/etc gatekeeping.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I get the feeling you haven't played this game. There's no stamina system so you can grind materials, exp and money as much as you want. Weapons and equipment are not tied to a paywall, only characters are with rubies, and you can buy them easily with in-game money.
As far as I've seen, you should be able to get through a lot of this game without spending a cent and my time hasn't been wasted at any point. This is a straight-up new Octopath Traveler game that just happens to be on on mobile devices. Let's not forget that a proper console sequel to OT is being developed so this is more of a nice buffer game than anything.
This reminds me of Fantasy Life on 3DS being popular, so naturally they did the next game for mobile.
Got excited as I thought it was either a sequel or prequel for Switch then I noticed Android and any interest in the game I had vanished immediately.
Spent a couple hours with it and wow it's a good game. I know many of you are elitists who scoff at the word mobile, but judging so far you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to try this.
As said above there aren't any stamina gauges that are the norm with mobile games and I spent a bit of time grinding my levels to take on the optional elite enemies, so you won't be stalled to progress by having to wait half a day to play a level.
Gacha seems completely optional. I'm sure for certain late game/post game/event things you'll want those high * rare characters and a well rounded team, but as far as playing through it normally, that seems quite doable with the free summons you'll earn and ability to grind levels and skill points.
And I mean..side quests that begin like this:
@SteamEngenius If I could buy it sure but I just don't like free to play/start.
@RubyCarbuncle Guess there's the free to not play option then? Will never understand "gamers" being above gaming due to some weird imaginary line of ownership in the digital age. Free to start and free to finish, to me, is pretty damn cool.
Nice! Cant wait to play this. Hearing good things about it.
Installed and was about to give it a try but apparently it has IP region locking similar to what most video streaming apps do. Well not that interested anymore if its something that will require you to be always online. Not like its a competitive online multiplayer game or something.
