Sting's genre-mashing Nintendo DS cult classic Knights in the Nightmare is coming to Switch next month – but sadly, it's only confirmed for Japan at present.
The game will hit the Japanese Switch eShop on April 7th, with a cost of 2,860 yen.
Originally released in the west way back in 2009, Knights in the Nightmare is infamous for being quite complex, but we liked it enough to award it 8/10, saying:
Let's be clear here: Knights In The Nightmare is a game designed for a very niche audience. It is a game that almost revels in being inaccessible to the average gamer. By this point I'm sure you've already decided whether Knights In The Nightmare is or isn't for you, but those of you willing to take the challenge will find a beautiful, genre-bending game with near-endless amounts of strategy, customisation and content. Truly, Knights In The Nightmare is a game worthy of the title "hardcore".

Well... There are known many cases, when an already translated to English language Japanese games comes to Nintendo Switch only in Japan and only in Japanese. Steins;Gate Linear Bounded Phenogram, Nobunaga's Ambition, some of musō games, Ar Nosurge DX... It's stupid that that these games are available only in Japan and only in Japanese on Nintendo Switch! I hope, at least, that this game(Knights in the Nightmare) will receive overseas release.
Let's hope other DS games follow suit (but I'm sad about those companies that no longer exists won't be able to port)
This kind of gives me a small glimmer of hope Infinite Space might one day re-release as a Switch game.
Yes! Never finished this one.
Removed - foreign languages
This gives me hope for monster tale!
Btw does anyone else think that contact might get a switch release?
Oh hey cool, bring back games like Riviera. Oh and Dokapon Kingdom. It would be PERFECT for the switch.
@HotGoomba I had to read the last 2 sentences a few times, because the machine translation is awkward, but by then it was too late. I can't believe you rickrolled me.
I think I'll pass on this one. It is a bit of a hassle to get anything on the Japanese eshop and I still have plenty of unfinished games.
Cult Classic? never heard of it until right now this very minute 😅
I can't see how this won't make it outside Japan, after all the translation and everything shouldn't be an issue since both DS and PSP versions (which I still own) already had English releases.
@RubyCarbuncle That's what cult classic means...otherwise it would just be a classic.
I've always regretted not buying this when I saw it in a store around release time. It's hovered on my Amazon wishlist until a couple of months ago. A Switch port would be amazing. But not in Japanese.
What was that about "other recent ports???"
@Greatluigi I just started Contact this morning, and I would never rule out anything... But I also feel like it's one of those games that would be super difficult. Idk if you've played it, but they reference you using a DS to play it and it has a lot of specific DS functionality
@RubyCarbuncle Imagine playing both a turn-based & RTS at the same time while your cursor is attacked like in a top-down space shooter. It gets nuts & frustrating.
Yet, I recommend trying it if you can. If anything, just so gamers can see how the heck they pulled this off.
I was very close to pulling the trigger on buying this one. I have the cartridge but not the case and manual.
I guess now I'll wait to see if the switch release gets english
@SteamEngenius True.
@Riderkicker I'm definitely interested now.
@Degenerate_Mii Atlus and Sting doesn't make folders, they only make games. Best to just keep bothering Nintendo for that.
I definitely wouldnt mind seeing classics from the DS and 3DS era get the console treatment, one feature i missed during the DS and 3ds era was having a TV-out option (despite playing games mainly handheld i still really enjoyed the option with things like the gameboy player, pstv etc)
I have this one for DS, but never tried it. It intrigued me that reviewers basically said it was the most complicated game ever haha
Oh snap. I had this game back on the DS and loved it, despite never finishing it because of how obtuse it was.
While I'm not sure how well it would translate to the Switch, I'd love for it to be localized again.
I still have this cartridge for my 3ds. Absolutely love this game. Truly unique (there really is nothing like it still) and yes, a sharp learning curve but worth it. The colors and visuals in general are beautiful. It wouldn’t work quite as well on the Switch because of the control of the wisp.
This is the best game nobody played…. Good lord I want a physical on switch
❗Lunar Knights is my favourite DS Game but I'm not sure if I'd want then to bring it back...
What a weird coincidence—I was trying to find a copy of this on DS in my country yesterday! No such luck. Would love to see an English language version 🥺 The PSP version was delisted on the PlayStation Store, so it’s really hard to get ahold of.
I still have this game and even though I thought it was pretty amazing I never finished it mostly because it was so confusing. But also because I didn't want to miss anything or kill anyone off, which only made it more confusing. I did buy the fancy limited edition that included an art book, though. Then I moved to Japan and a box of books that I sent to myself apparently exploded and that book was lost forever.
Hold on, "Foreign Languages" is reason enough to delete a comment?
Someone really needs to localize the Switch eShop ports of their classics, i'd buy Baroque in a heartbeat.
Oh my goodness, I loved this game! I never finished the game either, but the art design was amazing, and the gameplay was unlike any other. Trying to be a completionist was the worst with this game, because it was so easy to miss out on recruiting extra characters and unlockables mid-level. I would love to see a sequel for this game.
@aznable part of the TOS. You are supposed to post in English here. Mods will sometimes let it slide if you are posting with a translation but in general if you use anything other than English your post can be removed as it violates the TOS.
@Ryu_Niiyama I guess this really IS a British website.
I may still have this game. But I may have sold it for outrageous profit, too.
@RubyCarbuncle
To me that seems like the very definition of cult classic.
@Deerock69 Dude I know. What I'm saying is you didn't see this game anywhere here in Ireland at all, no mention of it in any media nothing. That's all I'm saying. Apart from this I'm aware of that. Perhaps I should have worded it better so my bad.
I played it on PSP.
Sadly, there's almost no way this'll be localized - Yggdra Union was ported to Switch in Japanese two years ago, and it's still untranslated. Would love to see either or both in English...
@RubyCarbuncle
I just checked, and I still have it for the DS. Happy day!
