Heart Machine, the original makers of indie darling action-adventure RPG Hyper Light Drifter, announced today that they've already begun work on a successor — just three months after the release of their last game, Solar Ash. It's called Hyper Light Breaker, and it takes the gorgeous 2D pixel-art look of the original game and replaces it with a stylish 3D aesthetic, with massive open biomes to explore.
According to the Steam page, Hyper Light Breaker is set in the Overgrowth, a new land in the world of Hyper Light, and will allow you to play solo or co-op with friends to explore the world and defeat monsters. It's described as an "action rogue-lite adventure", which already sets it apart from Hyper Light Drifter, but the snappy movement of the original looks like it will be maintained — you'll be using a wall-dash, hoverboard, and glider to traverse the land.
There will also be a homebase settlement to take care of, which will grow and flourish as you complete more of the game.
So far, Hyper Light Breaker has only been announced for PC (and you can wishlist it on Steam already), but fingers crossed for a Switch version in future!

I thought Hyper Light Drifter's aesthetic was awesome, this trailer just completely blew me away in terms of its style.
I hope they don't sacrifice quality of the moment to moment by making their new game open world. I feel like too many games go from closed spaces to open world with no real benefit recently. I can even think of a very recent example where quality took a hit because there's too little content to stretch out on a big area.
I adore HLD. It's easily one of my favorite games of the last 10 years. I haven't gotten around to playing Solar Ash yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
Honestly I'm not super impressed by the trailer for this new game, and I'm kind of gutted there's a new Hyper Light game that isn't sick pixel art. I'm sure it'll be a good game, just a little bummed.

hyper light drifter was a real pretty game but i never felt the gameplay/story was anything really to write home about

Ehhhh dunno if I can be bothered with yet another roguelite. I say, despite spending the last few months trying to platinum Binding of Isaac Rebirth on Vita of all things.
@Balladeer Yep... That fact that the game will be rougelite(if not rougelike...) is disappointing for me. I'm very bad at rougelites/rougelikes.
I thought the trend of "show a trailer without gameplay" was only a AAA thing.
Kinda disappointing to see it in the "indie" sphere too. Though I guess this isn't indie anyways?

People still likes and buys games like Enter the Gungeon, Dead Cells, Kingdom: New Lands, Kingdom: Two Crowns, Downwell, Out There, The Binding of Isaac, Darkest Dungeon, so, that means... Many people likes to play and buy games that they will never be able to finish or complete... Damn, why so many people likes hard games?...

I wouldn’t hold my breath for a Switch release. So far I haven’t heard of Solar Ash having a Switch version planned, and if this uses an offshoot of the same engine, it’ll probably be as difficult to port. There Could be ports of both eventually, but not for a long long while I’d imagine.
i didn't really like drifter but i'm still interested, they must have progressed after all. might be more of a reason to use chain dashes, and i hope they can communicate things better. also rogue stuff is my genre
I like Hyper Light Drifter myself. This looks even better. Though I only rarely DL rogue lite and likes compared to other genres. Review needed

Roguelike and 3D open world are both massive changes to the genre of Hyperlight Drifter - would have preferred another 2D Zelda style game instead

If it said "inspired by the 3D Metroid formula," then I would have been hooked
The indie scene has made a ton of 2D games inspired by old greats, so why not transition to modeling their games after classic 3D Zelda and 3D Metroid formulas?

Little bit concerned about it being a "rogue-lite", hopefully the emphasis is on the "lite" part.
Unless you count Deathloop (which I don't think does really count) I've yet to be persuaded by any rogue-like/lite that this is a fun genre and not an artificial way to pad out a short game. And yeah I'm including Hades in that.
I'll probably give it a go though!
