Amid the recent news around Nintendo targeting and taking down soundtracks on YouTube, today brings a slightly cheerier outcome for game music fans. The Pokémon Company has not only uploaded the official soundtrack for the original Pokémon Diamond & Pearl to YouTube, but has created an excellent 'Pokémon DP Sound Library' website with a variety of features.
On the website (which is under heavy load so may be inconsistent at the time of writing) you can download multiple discs of the official soundtrack, though unsurprisingly in doing so you agree to a lengthy set of terms and conditions. In addition to downloads for your personal use, the site lets you stream the soundtracks and has set up some rather nice playlists; we were listening to the 'Relax' playlist while typing this. You can even create your own mini playlists if you want.
A fun section is 'Sampling', in which artists sample sounds and music in new tracks; right now there's one track available from Alan Shirahama.
It's a fun site to explore while basking in some Pokémon sounds, so be sure to check it out.

Woohoo we can finally use diamond and pearl music without getting copyrighted!
This is almost certainly related to the recent Youtube takedowns, although whoever did it really didn't need to go after all the other videos too if this is all it was.
Still, nice to see at least some music up.
I know the Pokemon Company aren't tied directly with Nintendo and I'm so happy I can finally listen to all of this in one place without it getting taken down but man, after what's happened with GilvaSunner, that's ballsy.
It’s a start, but still won’t forgive em for forcing gilvasunner to exit the platform
Only the Pokémon Company ever release their stuff. The soundtracks have been on iTunes for years. I’d definitely be reading the T&Cs though, you’ll probably find people still get copyright struck.
I wonder if ironically this move by The Pokemon Company is what moving Nintendo to do what it has been doing the last few days. Maybe the plan moving forward is to provide this kind of access when releases occur and to not wedge them onto platforms like Spotify/Apple Music.
That's really nice to see!
@nessisonett Not true, there are MANY Nintendo soundtracks available trough sites like Play-Asia or Amazon Japan.
And this is how it works and how it should work. Copyright holders releasing their stuff when and how they want.
@sanderev One day you’ll see that simping for tech corps is utterly utterly pointless. Until that day, kindly get stuffed.
Well, at least they're making an effort.
@sanderev Yeah they do releases in Japan, but not everyone wants to import them. Also good luck playing a Japanese CD on your NA/EU CD player
not really cheering for game freak making available something that already was (see: Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Super Music Collection on Apple Music), can we maybe get some of the newer games without osts before suddenly releasing an old one (apparently) free of charge?
@RedGuy42 fully ascribe to what nessisonett says above there, but CDs are not region locked like DVDs generally
import tax is a helluva thing though, especially right now, and even then some products prices (rarely CDs) are egregious to the point you even see japanese people back-importing english releases that are much cheaper
...why is Cynthia in the Relax playlist?
@nessisonett you really think language like that is necessary? Also I'm not simping, I'm just pointing out facts based on regulations. Maybe someday you look in a mirror and see how wrong you are.
And if you want my opinion? Well, I think copyright legislation should change. To allow for non-profit (no ads on websites, no profile tracking, no sponsorships, etc) private personal usage, after 10 years of publication. (This would allow very simple romsites and music libraries of older soundtracks) Sadly though, that is not the case.
@RedGuy42 CDs work on any cd player, luckily. But yeah, import taxes are annoying (but if you look at it, even they are explainable)
@somebread @RedGuy42 makes me think about it... some of my regular japanese cd soundtracks of game music (not only Nintendo games) were like 45 euro excluding import fees and shipping (and some others even more expensive, and another ones cheaper, but still around the 30~35 euro mark without fees and shipping)
This a for a regular 2 CD variant though, sure I am happy to have multiple CD soundtracks with music from games I love, but really it's a goddamn expensive hobby, and streaming is often not even a option so the only 2 left are importing a expensive product like me, or screaming "arrrghhh!!" and going "THAT" route.
And all these companies, including Nintendo are themself the problem, just bring it out because people really want to buy it the normal way (or stream it).
But no...
And as for "some commenter I see very often here", well that person lives in it's own world and own truth, refuses to see the things the way they really are and is the perfect type of consumer most companies want to see (the one that shuts up and accepts anything)
Oh well.
If this is all that Nintendo gives us as compensation, they better believe we won't be happy. Just one (two) game's worth of music isn't going to satisfy.
Listening to DP music while typing this
Figures out how to bolden text while typing above comment
@shinesprites they've been getting very, very slowly better about it in recent years, but even then, if you're not a huge game lauded for its soundtrack, it's doubtful you'll get a retail or (god forbid) complete release (barring save, smash bros, where it's probably more the mass of legal tape that keeps any semblance of an ost nowadays)
I look forward to seeing if they do this with the rest of the games’ soundtracks. I wish they would put their stuff on Spotify too.
@shinesprites "Extremely hard to find" 😂

@sanderev They shouldn't have to be ordered from a foreign website. I remember wanting something from there a very long time ago and getting my card rejected because my bank doesn't allow for me to order from such places.
@Harmonie I don't know your situation, nor do I want to. But I've ordered multiple times from Play-Asia. And sure it does take a long time for the items to arrive (up 3-6 weeks easily) and they have import duties (like everything you import)
However there are also some local offerings here (like for instance this set https://www.nedgame.nl/merchandise/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-original-soundtrack-limited-edition/7407734864/) but those are also imported which increases the price compared to the same boxset in Japan. However it does have a "next day"-delivery and normal local payment options here. (Also Play-Asia offers some local payment options here, and pre-paid taxes making it cheaper than on the Dutch store)
They wreck that guys channel and in return pop up one crappy soundtrack. Oh Nintendo, you make me laugh daily with your absurdity.
It's crazy how many people still think The Pokemon Company = Nintendo. And after we all had a good laugh at everyone who invested in Nintendo stocks following the launch of Pokemon Go. Nintendo owns less than a third of TPC. This has nothing to do with the YouTube music.
@Coalescence
Nintendo also owns the Pokemon copyright and the name of each Pokemon.
Decisions like this don't go through without Nintendo's permission.
Sites a bit slow but it isn't too bad. Would have been too much to add the extra Platinum tracks though?
