Looking for a new platformer to check out on Switch? Well, perhaps Jack 'n' Hat, launching this Friday, can scratch the itch.
From 2Awesome Studio, the game is a retro-inspired 2D platformer where players take on the role of Jack, a "jack-of-all-trades" repairman on a quest to save princess Riri from the (presumably evil) Dr. Voo Doom. You'll need to jump and slide your way through a variety of themed locations like deserts, jungles, and volcanoes, battling devious enemies and dangerous bosses along the way.
Here's a list of key features to tell you a little more:
- 20 fantastic levels with extra secret levels to unlock!
- Collect Crystals, Gems and Stars. Can you get them all?
- Intense Boss Battles
- Unlockable abilities
- Catchy chiptune soundtrack
- Two different game modes: Retro & Modern (infinite lives)
- 7-8 hours gameplay
Jack 'n' Hat will be available for $7.99 / £7.99 when it drops on the eShop this Friday.
Thinking of giving it a go? Let us know in the usual place.

Gee, I wonder how they came up with the idea about throwing a hat.
Not to mention the main character's pose in the artwork.
It seems like we're getting more of a shift towards these types of games in the retro-style community. We definitely need it.
Always remember to frequently launder your Jack 'n' Hat.
Love the aesthetic of this one, looks like a really nuanced retro and not just 'durr hurr here's big pixels durr hurr', especially with how it looks like a Game Boy/Game Boy Color game but stretched out slightly on a TV, nice stuff. Also, I echo the same sentiment as @Conangiga, I had to do a double take for a second there.
This looks like the Genesis classic "Kid Chameleon" with a touch of "Megaman" and "Super Mario Bros. 2". Depending on the price it might be worth a peek.
It looks pretty good.
But, while I love the play on words, doesn't having a villain named Voo Doom qualify as racist these days?
(I'm not offended, and don't have the background to know for sure, but I feel like someone's going to be upset about that.)
It looks like a mix of the Crash Bandicoot GBA games, Mario Odyssey, and Megaman VII. I'll keep my eyes on it.
Reminds me of 8bitboy
Looks ok but I'll wait on reviews.
If you guys can think of a better way to pose while throwing a hat, I'd like to hear it.
Jack 'N' Hat looks like it could be interesting and based off of the trailer it seems like it's my kinda game. I'll definitely have to look into picking this up at some point.
Looks like good retro fun for us older casual gamers. But did anyone notice in the description how the “modern” game mode, versus the “retro” one, is the version with infinite lives?
Hahaha how times have changed.....
@Purgatorium Oddjob from Goldfinger had a better style.

Another name could have been Ge 'N' Eric
Finally...something that is not a mehtroidvania or rouge-like. Art style looks a little generic, but I can forgive that in this case.
@Magrane I think Crash 4 started that trend. The Alex Kidd remake also had a toggle for infinite lives.
Honestly, if a game is built around the lives system, that's what I want to use. It's honestly quite rare for a game like this to really be built around that, though. A lot of devs think the celeste approach is the only one that works. :L
@RetroOutcast oh wow, was not aware it popped up in Crash 4. What’s the Celeste approach? I agree about the lives approach- for our retro generation it’s about the replay value and the challenge of the lives / continue system.
@Magrane To me the Celeste approach is getting rid of lives so that it's "fair", but proceeding to make every screen a nusiance that will require you to die somewhere in the double (and eventually triple) digits to overcome.
As for this game, I tried it out and while the lives system is there...it definitely was not built around it unfortunately. Same as Crash 4- it's there but the actual design and gameplay is more contemporary. Pretty disappointing.
